More than a century old industry but still the most tempting and reliable industry in India for

most of the entrepreneurs to invest in is Indian film industry. Right since the era of Lumiere brothers cinematography which was the beginning of Indian cinemas in 1896 this industry had witnessed high change in trends of films. With films here we mean every aspects to some movie may it be the production troop, technologies used, message conveyed by the movie to the society, characters enacting in it etc. If we analyse globally the trend change in the Indian film industry we get to know that this is the industry carrying highest degree of entropy in it. Reasons are valid in some respect but the change has lost the essence that movies used to carry previously. Taking a quick overlook on movies today what we find they are produced with a motive to earn maximum profit. We cant only blame the directors for having such mind setup its the public which demands the same so they produce the same. Similar to the two faces of coin changes in trends have both somewhat beneficial in some respect and had proved havoc also. Lets now enlighten you up with some of the changed trends in this industry and their consequences. Major drawback in Indian public is that we dont dare to challenge the ongoing changes even if we are aware that its not at all going to be beneficial for us rather we start to adjust according to the prevailing change. This habit is exploited to its verge by Indian film industry. Enlisting some most basic changes: The budget of a film being produced in 60s to 70s use to be between 1 to 15 crore but today in 20s average budget of films have rised upto 3 to 135 crore. Obviously the reason is hike in prices of every stuff required to produce a film. Initially films used to be released with 200 to 300 prints all over. Today they open simultaneously with 2000 to 3000 prints. Reason multiplexes and worldwide launch at a time. Advent of multiplexes. If a film worked in small centers and among masses, it was a point of celebration. Class-appealing films were frowned upon. But today class appealing films are often referred to as multiplex films. And if your film worked in

multiplexes you are supposed to celebrate single theatres doesnt have weightage now . The rich and famous initially ( 60s and 70s) avoided going to cinemas. But now the rich, richer and richest, famous, more famous, most famous go to multiplexes it has become a status symbol for them now. Initially film promotion meant giving interviews to the print and electronic media. Todays trend followed by industry entails appearing on reality and talent shows, moving to different cities for advertisement and bagging up business, releasing promos. Although talking about Ram gopal verma he doesnt even releases the 1st part while the promo of sequel is released. The number of reels to the censor board depicted the relief to them in such a way that more the reels they heaved a bigger sigh i.e. the period of sigh was directly proportional to the number of reels. Todays pattern is lesser the reels bigger the sigh heaved by the censor board. Direct proportionality has changed into inverse proportionality. Talking about our local Casanova Ranbir kapoor no matter how long the reel would be his presence at the end need seeking. Number of songs in the film has definitely reduced. As compared to 10 to 15 songs in a film previously the estimate is lowered to 2-3 songs at most. Even our dialogs and lyrics had undergone a sea change. Dialogs used to be spoken in chaste hindi or urdu while English was restricted to words like thank you sorry excuse me etc. but today English word and sentence are being used liberally. Ditto in case of lyrics. No songs seems to be complete without some English lines, some English words are compulsory. Even the titles of movie has half the hindi part and half English e.g. rockstar, players , tell me o khuda, and lot more. But the lot has still not changed in bollywood. It is same as it was before a decade or two or three.

Decision of public reside strictly on the star cast in the film. Trend is created that movies with khans casting into will surely be intresting. Afterall khans have that X-factor in bollywood. One point I think everyone must have noticed. The elegancy in clothes has been overtaken by vulgarity in wears and decency of language has been overtaken by slangs and abuses. Afterall jo dikhta h wohi bikta h according to our famous kissing stars godfather Mahesh bhatt. Today almost every producer, actor claims that the film is quite different from others hatt ke but yet so many films look like so many other films. Love stories have same old concept of boy being harassed mentally and physically by the family of girls still the end is happy and they get together. Hats off for guy. A change which has some effective positive impact is that now directors and producers dare to think upon social issues of country and make films on those in order to increase awareness among people about those social evils e.g. Madhur bhandarkars films like traffic signal, page 3, etc. these create direct impact on society. Initially movies used to be released in theaters and after that copies were sold to common public in form of vcd tapes or recording discs which is now overtaken by compact discs and dvds which are easily available in market in cheap prices. Talking about change in fashion trends nowadays actors are not dressed to look good but they are made to dress in order to make the common people connect to their characters. Unlike earlier costume designers get due recognition for their contribution to movies. These are some concrete changes in the trend change inside the industry. If we look an basic theme trend change in Indian cinema industry we could manipulate and interpret it easily by dividing the era since 1940s into four major phases i.e. 1st phase from 40s to 60s which could be termed as golden era of Indian cinemas which critically acclaimed movies like mother india, awara etc. These movies revolved around common man, who faced various struggles of life, to which the audience can relate to and come out as a man with right morals. It

showed protagonist as a poor man who deflected from his path due to reasons like greed realizes his mistake and struggles hard and come out successful man at the end in a just way. 2nd phase was from 60s to 80s which witnessed distinctive change in storyline. Movies like anand, sholay etc. being released which was more action based and romantic in nature. Violence became an integral part of movies and villains was laid down with lot of emphasis who were basically underworld mafias. A lot of movies during this time revolved around this basic theme. The 3rd phase was from late 80s to early 2000. This phase saw the most diverse shift in the themes of movies. Advanced technology was introduced in Indian cinemas. The first ever sci-fi movie of Indian cinemas Mr. India was released which was a runaway hit. Comedy was introduced in movies during this period with romance already in the main theme. During this period lot of movies being produced have been shot overseas. The last or the ongoing 4th phase started in late 2000. This phase introduced lot of technical advancement in the ways movies are made. Right from koi mil gaya to ra one basic emphasis had been laid upon the visual effects rather than on story line. A lot of movies have been shot abroad with only a mention in India. The main reason why there has been shift in the content and the way the movies are being made in the last few decades is because the target audience has changed. In the early stages of Indian cinema the target audience was poor peoples hailing from villages and the movies were made so that they could easily relate to the protagonist of the movies. As time changed the audience changed now the target audience became the upper middle class or upper class, who relate more with the hero who had more money a big bungalows and bikes. Hence in order to make movie sell, a poor boy from distant village would not be the formula today. Even the rural crowd now like to watch a movie in which a dance sequel has been shot in Egypt or Switzerland.
