Ron Johnson Biography

Ron was born on May 15, 1947 in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Four
months later his family moved to Salisbury, North Carolina. Among his early
recollections of growing up, was that of becoming an artist.

At an early age, he was attracted to such artists as John Nagy, Michelangelo,

Da Vinci and Dr. Seuss. On one occasion there was a special exhibit of small
drawings, paintings and prints at the local library. Viewing this exhibit was
Ron’s first experience in seeing “real art” first hand. Ron began his college
studies at East Carolina University. The U.S. Navy interrupted his college
education in 1968. Ron was stationed ine in in Nea Makri, Greece until his
release in 1972. He would use his spare time drawing, and painting. In 1973,
he was accepted into the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he continued his
artistic studies in printmaking and illustration.

In 1978, Ron graduated from the University of Cincinnati with an MFA. After
graduation he became an instructor at the Art Academy. In 1980, Ron opened
his own graphics and illustration company. For the next twenty years Ron
created commercial art, while learning more and more about practical design,
illustration and photography on a professional level. When personal computers
started taking over the design world, he began to long for the days where he
could express himself with brushes, paints, pens and ink. This tactile world
had more to offer than pushing a mouse around the computer screen.

As a side, Ron kept teaching himself how to paint, particularly with oils. It
wasn’t until 1987 that he began to seriously think of changing his career to
become a full time artist. He began to prepare a group of paintings to honor
his parents 50th wedding anniversary. His first oil painting show was exhibited
at the Waterworks Gallery in his hometown of Salisbury, North Carolina. In
1993 a PBS instructional “plein art”
show featuring John Stobart, jump
started Ron into doing “plein air”
painting. In the next several years,
Ron produced over a thousand
paintings. By 1995 Ron was an
established painter.
