Huron High School Welcomes Mr. Scott Matheny

As the calendar pages have flipped to August many changes have taken place both in and around the Huron City Schools. Floors are waxed and shined, walls are painted, and some new textbooks have been purchased and delivered. One major change at Huron High School isthere is a new captain at the helm. Mr. Scott Matheny, was offered and has accepted the position of Principal of Huron High School during the June 19th School Board Meeting. Matheny comes to Huron with three very important qualities: experience, energy and a positive attitude. With several years of teaching, coaching and administrative experience behind him, he is ready to take on Huron High School. Coming to Huron is an outstanding opportunity. It is the crown jewel job, Matheny explained. Having grown up in nearby Wauseon, Ohio, earned his Masters at Bowling Green State University, taught and coached in Arcadia and was the Assistant Principal in both Findlay and Sandusky, Matheny is very familiar with Districts the size of Huron and the importance of a small town atmosphere. One of Mathenys main goals is to help continue the excellence with distinction mark the district has already earned. This mark is testament to the years of hard work the District has put forth. I would like to contribute to this by looking at ways to zero in on the small percentage that may need additional help, he explained. Additional academic changes in the 2012-2013 school year will include adding a Forensic Science Class that will be taught by Mrs. Jennifer Telekno, the hiring of Mrs. Stephanie Hotz to the teaching staff in the Language Arts Department, new math books that are current with the core standards for the State of Ohio and a Technology Innovation of rolling out I-pads is currently being researched. Additional changes that have taken place for this school year are: a new Mac Computer Lab, an Applied Communications Classroom and within reasonable time the fulfillment of the Athletic Directors position. Matheny describes himself as not big on sitting back. He is very proactive, well prepared and plans on making changes on an as needed basis. Matheny is very eager to have the students back in the building and to begin focusing on getting to know them. I am thrilled with the current activity level around the facility, he explained. The band practicing, the volleyball team in the gym, the cross country team out running (to name a few) it is great to see all of the activity! Matheny is looking forward to becoming a Huron resident as soon as he is able to sell his home in Sandusky and move east. He strongly feels it is importantly for him to live in the community in which he works In the meantime, he encourages students, parents, staff, community members, alumni, to stop in and say hello. Open lines of communication are very important to Matheny, give him a call or drop him an email. He is pleased to be a Huron Tiger now! Freshman Orientation is Thursday, August 16th at 7:00 pm in the High School Gym. Freshman and their parents are invited to use this opportunity to explore the scheduling, find lockers, meet teachers, and gather valuable High School information. There are a few Open Enrollment positions available at the high school level. Parents of students who are interested in becoming an Open Enrollment student are encouraged to contact the High School office at 419-4331234 ext. 1 to learn where space is available.

New Senior Housing Development Coming to Huron

Artist rendering of the Three Story development By Lisa yako This September, ground will be broken on the corner of Berlin and Cleveland roads for a new senior housing development. The development will be constructed for and managed by Miller Valentine Group of Cincinnati. Miller Valentine has been in business for 60 years and in the residential housing business for the past 20 years. The company has developed, owns, and manages, over 10,000 housing units throughout the Midwest and Southeast. Their holdings include developments in Whitehouse and Sylvania Township in suburban Toledo, similar to the one to be constructed in Huron. According to Pete Schwiegeraht of Miller Valentine, our city was chosen as the site for a new senior housing project because Huron is a wonderful community, an ideal retirement area, and has no comparable senior independent living facilities. The requirements for residency at the new development will relate to both age and income level. Specifically, residents must be 55 or older and have an adjusted median household income of 60% or less of the median income in Huron. The development will contain 12 1-story cottages each with 2 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, and an attached 1-car garage and 1 3-story building with an elevator that contains 33 units each with 1 or 2 bedrooms. All units will be 100% accessible and include a myriad of amenities. The development will also include amenities such as on-site management, a theater, fitness center, business center, club/banquette rooms, outdoor recreation space, picnic shelter, senior service plans, and community gardens. According to Schwiegeraht, the service plans include access to transportation, meals programs, medical referral, a residents association, regularly scheduled programs and activities, and linkage to other local programs and services providers. The facility will also adhere to Enterprise Green Standards. Finally, the convenient location of the development will make many of Hurons business and restaurants very easy to reach by foot. Miller Valentine will serve as the general contractor for the construction of the new development. But, beginning in August Miller Valentine will put out a call for bids for the subcontractor work. They invite all local subcontractors to bid the work. The construction phase is estimated to take six months. Once the construction is complete, Miller Valentine will retain ownership of the development but will hire 2 full-time employees and 1 parttime employee. Huron will benefit from this new development in a number of ways. Specifically, the development will allow local seniors an option to stay in town as their needs change. It will also offer residents an unrivaled senior living environment. stated Schwiegeraht. Additionally, the facility represents nearly $9,000,000 in development and likely will boost the population of Huron. If you would like more information about leasing a unit at the new development, contact Miller Valentine at www.yournextplacetolive.com or at 1-800-329-rent. Applications for residency are already being accepted.

By Lisa yako Golf carts could soon be a common sight on the streets of Huron. At the July 24 City Council meeting, the first of three readings of the purposed legislation that would allow golf carts to be operated on Hurons streets was presented. The legislation will again be presented at the August 14 and August 28 City Council meetings, with a vote being taken at the August 28 meeting. Should Ordinance No. 2012-35 be approved, golf carts will be allowed on all streets that have a speed limit of 35 mph or less. When crossing State Route 6, operators of golf carts will be required to cross at intersections that have a traffic signal. According to the ordinance, golf cart owners are required to have a safety inspection performed by the Huron Police Department before he or she can drive on the streets of Huron. In order to pass the inspection, which will cost the owner $25, the golf cart must have proper lights, turn signals, a windshield with wipers, a horn, a rearview mirror, seat

belts, and a license plate light. In addition, the owner must comply with all Ohio laws pertaining to operating a motor vehicle, such as safety, insurance, and registration requirements. Further, all laws pertaining to child safety restraints also apply to golf carts. To operate a golf cart, the driver must be at least 17 years old and possess a valid drivers license. In other City news, Erie Blacktop, Inc. has been awarded the contract for the resurfacing work at Fabens Park. Erie Blacktops bid of $480,386.55 was the lowest bid the City received for the work. The resurfacing project is part of the Fabens Park Site Improvement Project and is set to begin soon. Also pertaining to Fabens Park, the City entered into an agreement with Park Ridge Development to purchase a parcel of land at the south end of Fabens Park for $25,000. This will be paid over a two-year period. The City has been leasing this land from Park

Ridge Development for $100 per year since 2002. Also, work on the next phase of the Pier Improvement Project has commenced. Currently, the new obser-

vation deck on the foundation of the former lighthouse is under construction. Gimco Concrete and Construction, LLC is doing the concrete work, Latanick Equipment, Inc. will install steel railings, and Dale Barnum Construction will construct the decking for the handicap ramp that will allow full access to the new observation deck. Access to the lighthouse is limited during this construction period.

Letter to the Editor

In recent months I have spoken publicly about the actions of two current Huron School board members and one former member and have submitted letters to both the Register and the Huron Hometown News disputing information that they voluntarily put out in the public. Everything I have stated has been verified with public records and their statements. I always do my research and share information that is relevant to the situation. What I find amusing is that some of the people tied to Fred Fox have family members who will go to great lengths to intimidate those people who dare question the actions of anyone involved. I have personally witnessed one family waiting in the parking lot after a board meeting to yell at a board member. A spouse of a former board member has exercised his right to check my background through my employer. Anyone who views my file will see that it contains nothing negative. I am just curious how my work performance has any correlation to the decisions and actions of the Huron School Board. Many people I have never met have stopped by my home, called me on the phone, and approached me in pubic to thank me for having the courage to speak out. I will continue to do so when I see a discrepancy in the information provided to the public. I just hope that some other Huronites will do the same. Sherry Catri Huron

SBC Coaches and Golf

Last week all of the SBC conference coaches took time out at Sawmill Creek Resort for a little golf, lunch, and camaraderie. They are all in the midst of preparing their teams for the upcoming season. Though all are very competitive individuals, it was nice to the friendly, professional demeanor that all them displayed through out the day. Not surprisingly, Clyde was picked to finish first in the conference in both, the coaches and media polls. Huron was chosen to finish second followed by Perkins, Oak Harbor, Edison, Port Clinton, Margaretta, and SMCC. The only difference between the results of the coaches and medias poll was a flip flop of where Perkins and Oak Harbor would finish. The Huron Tigers, again coached by Tony Legando, finished second in the league with a 9-2 record including six wins in a row until they ran into a strong Genoa team in the State Playoffs. The Tigers have a brutal early schedule facing Elyria Catholic, Holy Name, Norwalk St. Paul, and Clyde in their first four games. Legando noted that his team must improve on defense this season which proved to be susceptible to off tackle running attacks. The coach also stated the team would possibly get back to more run-n-shoot style offensively along with some option play.
