Helping to secure the future of Herne Bays own museum

Friends of Herne Bay Museum

Issue 7 SPRING 2012

KINGS HALL EXHIBITION

he Friends will be hosting a Herne Bay Museum stall at this years Business and Projects Exhibition. Last year this was the rst outreach event that the Friends had mounted on behalf of the Museum. This seems surprising until you realise that all previous activity had been focused on securing the future. So for all practical purposes The Friends as a creative supporting unit is only a little over a year old. This year we will be holding a Whats it For? competition, a selection of mystery objects can be examined and handled and visitors invited to guess their use. There will be encouragement in the form of, an as yet unspecied, prize. Please come along if you can, and introduce yourselves as Friends, it would be nice to get to know some more faces. The event is on Wednesday 21st March from 2pm until 7pm.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

the Next Event at

o date the only income we have received has been from our members and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all for your loyal support. Sometime this year, sooner rather than later, we will have to arrange an AGM. I know, sounds grim doesnt it? But it need not be - we shall try and make it fun. At some point during an AGM the treasurer delivers a report on where money has been spent and what income has been received. Until then we thought you ought to have an idea what the committee spends your money on. The biggest single expense over the last year and a bit has been out own recruiting leaets, two boxes of which cost just over two hundred pounds. we are currently about half way through them. Apart from that, money gets spent on the events that we help the museum with, up to and including the Big Picnic, this involves print outs of photographs, various graphics and other display materials. There are stationery and postal costs, an amount on refreshments for the opening evenings we have been involved with and our membership to BAfM. Our income compared to our outgoings has stayed on the positive side and we held 467.07. on the 13th of February 2012 If we wish to help the Museum further we will need to raise more funds so we intend to look at this and see if we can nd support by various alternative means. Any donations from well wishers will always be gratefully received, and we would ensure that it would benet our Museum. Wishing you all A Happy Spring and Summer Andrew Cook treasurer

Issue 7 SPRING 2012 BANKERS ORDER FORM Your details: For UK banks only Name: Address:

he sharper-eyed among you may have noticed that you havent had to renew your subscription to the Friends of Herne Bay Museum for a while... This isnt because we forgot to ask - it was simply our way of saying thank you for helping us get off the ground when the Museum was under threat of closure. Unfortunately, we cant survive without money, so well be asking you to renew your subscriptions later this month, and well be synchronising all the annual subscriptions to start and renew on 1st April. If youve joined in the last 6 months (i.e. since 1st October 2011) you wont need to renew - your subscription will roll over into 2012. The subscription fee will be unchanged for 2012, but we may need to nudge it up a bit in 2013. It would be a huge help to us (and reduce our running costs) if you could pay by standing order, so heres as an incentive - if we do raise the fees in 2013, you wont pay any extra if youre paying by standing order. Theres an offer you cant refuse! Please set up a standing order if you can - it will save us all money! Well be at the Herne Bay Business and Projects Exhibition at the Kings Hall on Wednesday 21st March (2pm - 7pm) so you could renew then, or just pop along to say hello and see what were up to. he Friends have joined BAFM, full title: the British Association of Friends of Museums. This was formed in 1973 for Friends, volunteers and supporters of museums. It represents 200,000 Friends and Volunteers across the UK, offering a network of support from people with rst-hand experience of running Friends organisations, and acting as a clearing house for common problems and their solutions, and is a central source of information about Friends for Friends.

BAfM - what is it?

It has links with a variety of organisations: the Department for Culture, Media and Sport; the Museums Association; Arts Council England and many more. We decided to join for this year to see what it can offer. A very large and comprehensive membership pack arrived recently and members of the committee are currently studying it closely and, I hope, evaluating it. You can have a look for yourself on the website at: www.bafm.org.uk.

News in Brief

he Friends has been successful in negotiating a sponsorship deal with a local wine merchant. Starting in June the wine for Museum openings is being kindly supplied by Beer Brothers, Canterbury Road (next to Tesco metro). here is just a chance that we will be able to secure beach hut 136 for the Museum on Beach Hut Day in August, we have applied and are waiting to hear if there are any other claims. Watch this space.

e are looking into the possibility of commissioning a coin in the slot automaton for the Museum. This would act as a fund raising device as well as being entertaining, educational and child friendly. It is likely that we will have to come up with other fund raising ideas in order to raise the funds!
