A 26-year-old Calgary man, whose name has not been released as of press time, is in critical condition after an incident occurred at the Wyndham Carseland Provincial Park weir Aug. 5. The man and a friend from Sylvan Lake were attempting to guide their raft over the weir when they were thrown off and into the churning water. The Calgarian was able to climb back aboard the raft and wait for help, while his friend swam to shore. The Carseland Fire Department and the Strathmore Fire Departments water rescue team were called in to rescue the man. Three attempts were made to throw an object to the man until eventually he was able to grab hold of the rope which had a lifesaver tied to the end of it. In pulling him up out of the water the Calgary man somehow slipped and fell into the water, staying underwater for a few minutes. Onlookers kept an eye out for him and when he resurfaced the Strathmore Fire Department was able to pull him into the rescue boat and bring him ashore to the waiting ambulance. Rafting can be a great way to spend a hot and sunny day, but safety should be everyones first concern when on the water. We want everybody to have a great time but we also hope that people will make decisions based on their abilities, skills and knowledge, said Sgt. Patricia Neely, spokeswoman with the RCMP. The goal is to make sure that everybody can enjoy the waterways in as safe and enjoyable a manner as possible. We do hope that people will make smart decisions for themselves. Neely said the City of Calgary seems to have a number of incidents but in Carseland the weir is so large there normally arent many issues. Usually there are ropes and signs at the weir warning people against getting any closer, and there is a chained buoy that runs across both the top and the bottom of the weir. Allegedly the bottom one was missing.

Wonderful weekend!
Those who planned a bit of a stay-cation had plenty to do in Strathmore this weekend during the Strathmore Stampede. There was fun for everyone who enjoyed the get-dirt-in-your-face style rodeo. World champions and novice competitors alike gathered to show what they were made of. Shannon LeClair, Morgan Lee and Mario Prusina Photos

It was an honour to carry the Chamber of Commerce banner with my granddaughter, Destiny. Once again the Chamber did a stellar job thank you to Lin Walker and the parade committee. If you have a business then you know about the danger of getting sued. It is always better to be safe than sorry. If you are putting in a float or horse-drawn wagon in the parade let your broker know. Of course you are going to do everything possible to prevent any sort of injury but accidents do happen. Ask your broker to send a note to the insurance company to specifically cover this extra exposure. There is usually no charge. You can have this printed on the policy declaration, liability extended

for a float/wagon in the Strathmore Heritage Days Parade. If something does go wrong e.g. one of the horses spooking or something falling off your float then you are not going to panic. You and your broker partner have informed the insurance of the possibility. Protect what you have worked so hard to gain. Take control of your insurance.

The annual Strathmore Stampede parade has been a success since its inception. Each year the parade grows in both the number of participants, and length of the route. Hundreds of people turned out to enjoy the parade go by. The theme this year was Agriculture - Your Past, Your Present, Your Future.

The annual corn maze, a town favourite, is almost ready for its official opening. Kevin Gibbons, corn maze staff coordinator, says that the maze will be open from Aug. 10 until October harvest. It will be open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays, and from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on weekends depending on the weather. Groups, businesses and schools can book times outside of the regular hours, said Gibbons. There will also be some special evening events taking place this year. The maze growth is going well, exceeding the growth in the same time frame last year. [The] corn is over 5 feet tall, said Gibbons. Something new this year is there will be three maze difficulties: easy, medium and hard. We will have staff at the maze, just in case someone gets lost, we never had an incident last year and dont anticipate one this year, said Gibbons. Admission is the same as last year, with children 9-yearsold and younger offering donations rather than admission, and anyone 10 or over paying $5. Children under the age of

12 will not be allowed in the maze without an adult. Its a family event, said Gibbons. Last year we had babies all the way to the elderly. However, Gibbons does recommend proper footwear and clothing to be worn. There will also be pop and water available for sale, and Gibbons said they may consider adding other activities at a later date. All net proceeds from the corn maze go to local charities and groups.

Letters to the editor

Money down the drain

To the Editor The last billing cycle from The Town of Strathmore reflects that my household used a total of 23 cubic meters of potable water and I was billed accordingly. I am concerned with the Sewer Levy portion of the bill that suggested that my house deposited 23 cubic metres down the system. It is impossible for my house to consume 23 cubic metres of potable water only to deposit that exact amount through the sewer system. I water my lawn, flowerbeds, strawberries, raspberries, saskatoons and I also fill my water fountain. How can I consume this water on the metre, use portions of it outdoors that does not use the sewer system and still get billed for the entire amount as if it was entering the sewer system? Everyone on Town Council and Administration as well keeps saying that there is a user pay system in place, but why do I need to pay this amount if I am not fully using it? Is this not actually illegal? Charging for a service that you are not actually being provided. For years this has been a hot topic for deliberation and most of us call it Ghost Water. Sewer water that does not actually exist and is being charged for. I am all for water conservation and paying my fair share, but is it fair to pay for the inflated sewer usage? Does The Spray Park water also cost us, the Citizens of Strathmore, not only a potable water charge, but a sewer charge as well? Since we no longer have Residential Irrigation and the Town of Strathmore Parks Department waters the Towns Parks, Trees, Flower Gardens and Green Spaces with potable water does the Town also pay the sewer levy portion of this water like the rest of us do? If so someone needs to be fired and if not someone needs reimburse the rest of us that do. Either way, we the Citizens of Strathmore, are paying for the Town to water with potable water. Restructuring of the Sewer Levy Portion of the Water Bill needs to be put in place. We Are All In This Together, Mr. John M. Whieldon Strathmore

Isnt it ironic?
Pat Fule Fule for Thought My English students at SHS know that I find irony to be very interesting. Many times irony occurs in language or literature, but it can also happen in real life. In fact, we often face situations where we expect one thing, and the opposite actually happens. These events can be very stark and serious, or take more humorous forms. You would think that there could never be humour on the day of my moms funeral. I thought it would be a long time before I found anything humorous, and yet just before we left my childhood home for the funeral, irony was there! My dad was getting dressed and ready to go, and the mood was very somber. From out of my parents room, came a loud yell, mixed with tears, mixed with laughter. My dad (who never had a lot of hair) was using a bit of hair spray, as the day was snowy and windy. Deb and I rushed into the room to find that what he grabbed and thought was hair spray, was actually Pledge! He was in shock, and then I asked if he wanted me to give him a little buff to shine up the old head? We hugged, laughed, and cried, and I realized humour sometimes comes when you least expect it, or when it may be needed. Twelve years later, my dad died suddenly of a massive heart attack, as he was loading his truck and boat for a day of fishing. Again, we were destroyed by the shock of his death no one expected it so suddenly. After going to see him at the hospital, we decided to get over to his place. As we looked over his truck and boat, Debbie noticed that Dad had packed two cans of beer and a thermos of tea. Oh, Joe, Deb laughed, as she smelled the thermos. He had packed a thermos of tea, alright, but it was mainly Rye Whiskey! We both started to laugh, because that was my dad. He had died preparing for a fun day of fishing, and we saw and smelled, just how fun it WAS going to be! We never expected laughter this day, but ironically Dads packing made it happen! You would think a University instructor could be trusted, but youd be wrong. I trusted my swimming instructor, who was also the U. of C. swim coach. By now, all 16 of you readers (my numbers have gone up by three!) know how bad I am in water. I left my swim class until the very last semester of my B.PE courses. By nights, I was in a course for nonswimmers called Aquatics Anonymous. There, I tentatively learned to blow bubbles with my face in the water, and as well learned to tread water in what they called a Dead Man Float (nice name for a drill when youre terrified of water!). I also learned to go off a diving board wearing a life jacket! I never realized how far down you go when you hit water! Anyway, during the days, I was in a large Swim class on one end of the pool. I tried not to stand out, as if THAT would be possible! Heres where the irony came in. Pat, said my instructor/torture. I think youd be better off in the 1 p.m. class. Its smaller, with a lifeguard, and youd get way more 1-on-1 instruction. This sounded like a great idea! I thought if anyone knew what was best for me as a non-swimmer, it would be the Swim Coach. Oh yeah, the class was smaller alright, AND it was in the DEEP end of the pool! The one guy I trusted, saw that I was hopeless in the shallow end, and he figured Id be better in the DEEP end??!! Oh, Irony youre a harsh teacher! As it turned out, I barely passed, and I could only swim across the pool along the bulkhead divider! It was my lowest mark in University, but I was never so happy to see a D on my transcript! (Hmmmm another example of irony a low mark that actually saved my butt!) Another poor lady got her own dose of irony. Youd think if youre scared of water and snorkelling, that your family could be trusted. One of my friends was on a Hawaiian holiday, and the family went snorkelling in a shallow bay. The mother-inlaw had been coaxed by everyone to try snorkelling, and that theyd be right there to help her. She TRUSTED her son-in-law (bad decision!). As she snorkelled with her masked face underwater, she began to feel better about it all. Just then her sonin-law found a dead Moray Eel (big, fierce teeth and all)! She inched along, and he used the eel like a puppet, moving it up, and directly at her. As he did this, the eels mouth, and razor-like teeth, opened wide RIGHT in front of her mask! Needless to say, she was terrified and burst out of the water, screaming. The son-in-law had a great laugh, but was met by a cold, icy stare from his wife. Huh youd think Hawaii wouldnt get such a massive cold front over the bay like that! It would be awhile before my friend got out of the doghouse, but he still feels it was worth it! (Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that will appear in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high school teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule. If you would like to get in touch with Pat, you can send him an e-mail at Pat.fule@shaw.ca)

Thought for the week ~ It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed

Remembering by giving back

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

LifeStyLeS

As a way of remembering her great grandfather one pre-teen has decided to collect items to create care packs for the homeless. Morgan Storch, 11, is hoping to collect enough money and items to make 25 of the care packages, with some for men, some for women and some for children. (Im looking for) both, but more money so that I can buy all the items I need to put together packs for them, said Morgan. The carepack is a backpack filled with day-today necessities for those in need. I was really proud, said Suzanne Adamson, Morgans grandmother who lives east of Strathmore. We took her down to the CDLC (Calgary and District Labour Council) BBQ for the past couple of years and I saw the look on her face it affected her. Im glad that it inspired her to do something good. James Adamson, Morgans great grandfather, passed last year and it was on the anniversary of his death this year that she decided she wanted to do something to honour him and his memory. He just kind of always raised her to stand up for whats right whether its popular demand or not and you always help if you can, and if you have idle time make use of it. Thats kind of what she was going with I think, said Sally Storch, Morgans mom. Last year Morgan had gone to the CDLC BBQ

morgan Storchs great grandfather James Adamson (they are pictured in the centre) meant the world to her. in his honour she is planning to create 25 care packs for Calgarys homeless.

to help hand out water bottles and chips to the homeless and Sally thinks it kind of helped open her eyes. She came home kind of half excited, half disgusted, half upset that there are actually people out there still needing stuff like that. I think it really rung a bell with her, said Sally. One thing Morgan noticed when she at the CDLC BBQ was though there was food being handed out, she didnt see anyone providing hygiene products, which is what she is hoping to do. Some of the general items she would like to collect are things such as socks, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, feminine hygiene products. Morgan and Sally can be contacted at tophandranchworks@hotmail.com or by phone at 403901-4494 or 403-633-5502. Cash donations can be mailed to Box 235 Jenner, Alta, T0J 1W0 c/o Morgan Storch.

Building our nation

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report

First, in the morning when its cooler: Clean a large supply of carrot/celery sticks and store in water in the refrigerator. Boil a dozen eggs. Cool. Refrigerate. Have some lettuce and grated cheese on hand (I buy my cheese already grated). Cut up a variety of seasonal fruit(s). Keep lunch meat, sliced meat, or frozen leftover roast or chicken on hand for quick and easy meals even on very hot and tiring days. Examples: Chef Salad. Just chop up some of your cleaned carrot and celery sticks, slice your hard boiled eggs, sliver some of your lunch meat and you have a chef salad. You can add any other vegetables too. If everything is cleaned in advance it makes cooking in a hot kitchen so much easier and faster. Dont forget the cheese! Egg salad, tuna salad or sandwiches. You can use those hard boiled eggs to make egg salad sandwiches or add them to tuna. Serve on lettuce for a tuna salad. You can add the cleaned celery to the tuna salad, too. Garnish with fruit pieces. Keep it simple. Put sliced cucumbers in salt and vinegar water and set out some cottage cheese. For an extra hearty meal, add some soft bread with butter, apple butter, cheese or peanut butter and fresh jam. Leftover pasta or rice. Use vegetables and seasonal herbs to enhance pasta salad or steamed rice prepared in the microwave. Used bottled Italian (or other) dressing. Fruit platter. Arrange fresh chunked fruit with a variety of crackers and cheese or put fruit on skewers for a pretty, tasty treat. Simple, cool, healthy, and refreshing.

As your Member of Parliament, I have recently received in my office two documents that I find important as a policy maker. The first was a June 28 letter from the Alberta Chamber of Commerce stating their support to expand Canadas access to crude oil markets. The second document was the Fraser Institutes July 17 report entitled, Ensuring Canadian Access to Oil Markets in the Asia-Pacific Region. When I am in Ottawa, my colleagues and I in the Conservative National Caucus spend considerable time developing the policies our nation needs to develop the talents, and capabilities of firms and workers in many sectors of Canadas economy. This work includes the management of many of our nations resources. As the government, we have the duty and responsibility to ensure that Canadians prosper at the same time that we manage responsible development of our resources. Since Confederation, the Government of Canada has overseen our nations progress and development by managing different resources at different times in our history. In our area of Crowfoot, our most senior generation talk about the federal government helping rural areas of Alberta and the two other prairie provinces to manage the years of the wheat boom. Before that, the world wanted Canadian lumber and our federal government was in the business of helping Canadians ship our wood to Europe. Previous to this and even Confederation itself we were collaborating to earn our way from the fur trade. Today, our Conservative government continues this role of helping to build a prosperous Canada. While each province and territory is responsible for the development of its own natural resources, the Government of Canada can help.

The Fraser Institute is a major Canadian think tank. They study the impact of markets; government interventions; and, they measure the welfare and prosperity of individuals. They are calling on Canada to build the infrastructure necessary to ship our oil to Asia. They estimate this will add at least $10.5 billion to Canadian GDP. They have identified significant job creation including for Canadas First Nations. This Fraser Institute study goes so far as to forecast significant gains from investments which will boost returns for Canadian pension plans and in turn, this prosperity will extend to Canadian Seniors as well. The Alberta Chamber of Commerce speaks on behalf of 125 local Chambers of Commerce and 23,000 businesses throughout our province (including many in our riding). Their June 28 letter to me was delivering the same message as the Fraser Institute, Alberta is a landlocked province which is almost totally reliant on the United States to purchase our crude oil. The Alberta Chamber of Commerce believes diversifying our energy markets is vital to sustained economic development for our country and our province. For me, these two documents go together. The Alberta Chamber of Commerce presented me with their case and the Fraser Institute within two weeks provided me with the details of the evidence proving the case. The most satisfying part of all of this is that Budget 2012 is doing a great deal of work to tool up Canada to realize this economic opportunity. As well, once again in Canadas history a part of our nation is going to experience such a high level of productivity and profitability that our entire nation will share in the benefits. Damage at DQ
Shortly after 3 p.m. on Aug. 4, the Dairy Queen, located at 210 Ridge Road, was struck by a vehicle. A woman ran her truck over the curb and struck the wall where the womens bathroom is located. No one was hurt, but the building did take damage. The outside wall is cracked, as the picture shows, and the tiling in both the womens and staff washrooms is smashed. The womens bathroom tiles have also been pushed in a few inches, and the mirror has been removed.

Combines for a Cure

Combines for Cures held its first concert, with four star performers including local artist Drew Gregory, up and coming star Codie Prevost from Saskatchwan, the band Hey Romeo and female artist Crystal Shawanda who played for enthusiastic country music fans at the Strathmore Ag Grounds Aug. 2. As part of the Combines for Cures Concert, the Man Van made its first appearance in Strathmore this past weekend. The van is a mobile unit that is trekking its way across Alberta in hopes to make an impact on early detection of prostate cancer in men. So far in 2012 it has been recorded that eight men die every week in Alberta from the effects of prostate cancer. Support from various local and province-wide agencies are making it possible to create a healthier future for all men in Alberta. A simple blood test is all it takes to possibly save a life. The Prostate Cancer Centre in Calgary deems the cancer a family issue and not just a male issue. By enlisting some popular Canadian country music talent and aligning themselves with Strathmore Heritage Days the group was able to target a large group in one location for awareness. They were joined by Calgarys Stampede Queen, Candice Lee, and two Princesses, Dani Gariepy from Rockyford and Jessica Manning, Miss Rodeo Okotoks Nicole Schlaak and Miss Strathmore Stampede, Becca Walters. They were all happy to be able to participate in this event preceding the third largest rodeo in the province and help raise awareness for the project. Drew Gregory, a local from Standard,

gave a fantastic performance and has gained quite a following over the last few years. He continues to put out new music and has made his way to Nashville several times. Drew is commonly known for his recent popular album Country Hurricane. For more information check out Gregorys schedule and up coming events on his Facebook page. Codie Prevost hails from Saskatchewan and is up for a Canadian Country Music Awards Association nominee as an up and rising star this coming fall in Saskatoon. His set included a single from his new album being released in 2013 called Last Night, All Day, a song he wrote two and a half years ago in Rose Valley called Im OK, Honky Tonk Groupie, and Someday. Prevost was excited to be a part of the concert saying, Were all in this lifesaving fight together. For more information check out the new website www.codieprevost.com. Country music group Hey Romeo entertained the crowd with their lively, toe tappin music and would have preferred the crowd could join them in two stepping on the rodeo grounds themselves. The last performer for the evening was Crystal Shawanda, the 2009 Canadian Country Music Associations Female Artist of the Year. Her latest album Just Like You hit stores in April and features the singles Closer and Down on Broadway. The fun night wrapped up beautifully with a spectacular fireworks display. For more information please contact the Prostate Cancer Centre located in Calgary or Google Albertas Man Van to find locations for the mobile unit in Alberta.

LOVE AT FIRST SIP!

100 Years of Memories commemorative book ready for Grand Opening

Rebecca FRiesen Times Contributor The highly anticipated book celebrating Strathmores 100th anniversary, 100 Years of Memories, is nearly ready to be officially released. Paul Sonsteby, author of the book, says he was honoured to be asked to write the book, and admits he has always loved history. Sonsteby was first approached by town council member Bob Sobol in April, and Sonsteby agreed to work on the book despite the time crunch. The books last draft was finished in November, and only minor edits and changes have been made in the past few months. Since so much has happened in Strathmore since the 75th anniversary book was released, Sonsteby had many people to help with various aspects of the book, including David Coates, the Information and Records Management Co-ordinator for the town of Strathmore. He was giving me some great feedback. I had to do a lot less work initially because of what he did, said Sonsteby We did work so well together, says Coates. I just felt a connection with Paul...he was so easy to work with. Sonsteby said many retired teachers, council members and local seniors were also great sources of commentary, advice. Sonsteby recalls several times where members of the town would contradict his research and more often that not, I would do more research, and they would be right. One thing Coates and Sobol stressed to me was they wanted this to be readable, said Sonsteby. While many older history books are written in chapters or paragraphs with family biographies, Sonsteby says in a town of our size, that wouldnt be possible. The book is broken down into years, where he highlights several things from each year. Its easy to read, you can read a little piece of it, or you can go through the entire book, said Coates. Along with the timeline style, there are 80 images in the book, full colour when available, said Coates. Sonsteby also includes what he calls the very important people, places and events. While not all important people, places and events are included, Sonsteby picked a few of each, such as George Freeman, the Joyland Theatre, and Heritage Days, which may have one or two pages dedicated to them in the book. People of all ages can enjoy this book, from sePaul Sonsteby, left, and David Coates, right, pose with a copy of the book, 100 Years of memories and a poster, celebrating the books official release which will occur on Aug. 23.

niors who may remember some of the stories and events to the younger generation who can flip through and learn more about the local history. I think theres a lot of people, like me for example, who send their kids to Crowther Memorial Junior High School and dont know who the Crowther is thats being memorialized, said Sonsteby. Gathering information for this book took several months, and he knew right away Id have to go to the Glenbow archives. He also says the previous history book on Strathmore celebrating our 75th birthday was a tremendous help. So much has happened in the past 25 years in Strathmore, it could have its own book, Sonsteby says. He began going through material and from there started to pull it to make more specific stories and events for the book. Youve got all this information, and youre trying to write it all, youve got to pull [what you think is important], says Coates. Sonsteby says he tried to stay away from any current events or anything still in discussion to stay true to the historical roots of the book. Sonsteby stresses that although my name is all over the book he wanted it to feel like our book, the towns book. This is how the contest for the books title started, which was held in the summer. James Bos won the competition with the title 100 Years of Memories. The book will be officially released on Aug. 23. The first 1, 000 copies of the book will be printed in hard cover with numbering along the spine. You can call (403) 934-3133 to reserve a copy, and you are even able to reserve specific numbers. There are paperback versions of the book available. There will also be a few book signings, where Sonsteby will be able to inscribe your book, the first night being Aug. 23, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Town Council chambers, another on Aug. 28, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Municipal Library.

Weekends like the Strathmore Stampede long weekend bring lots of fun, along with lots of noise. As of now Strathmore has a bylaw that was last revised in 2005 and covers all different types of noise disturbances, from

commercial and construction to domestic noise. Deputy CAO for the town, Linda Nelson says the bylaw is enforced on a complaint basis. People would have to phone in and make a complaint, said Nelson. Bylaw and Peace Officers would enforce [this] unless its

after 11 p.m., then its the RCMP. If theres a noisy party or something the RCMP would get called. On weekends with big events such as the Strathmore Stampede, the disturbances can be a lot louder and more frequent than at other times of the year, but its expected. Its just kind of understood when you have an event of that nature theres going to be some noise, said Nelson. The rodeo events are over by 9 pm, which is in the parameters of the bylaw. What usually are called in are violations to the domestic noise section of the bylaw. If theres noise coming from the campsite or wherever then it would be the RCMP that would deal with it, said Nelson, and usually theyd probably just go and give the person a warning and say hey weve had a complaint, could you turn your music down or stop yelling or whatever it is. The noise bylaw can be found on Strathmores website, www.strathmore.ca, under the Town Council tab, for anyone who is interested in reading all the specifics.

MS Day almost here

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter The end of August means more than just the end of summer; it also means A&Ws annual MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Day is almost here. This year. Aug. 23 is the day dedicated to raising MS awareness while raising funds to help the MS Society of Canada. As this topic is brought up more and more in the community, its amazing to see how many people are actually touched by this. They tell us the stats 300,000 Canadians affected by MS, and youre like okay its a big number but its not huge compared to Canadas numbers, said Strathmores A&W Manager Will Whatley. But almost every single customer we talk to knows someone who has it. I have three staff that have family members that have MS, weve had two former staff that had MS. Its such a horrible disease that its really great to see the community talking about it. Last year Strathmore raised $7,339.75, surpassing the goal of $5,000. This year Whatley and his staff have been aiming higher, wanting to raise $10,000. Theres no reason why we shouldnt hit $10,000 this year, said Whatley. Activities for MS Day will be held in the A&W parking lot. Whatley said the day will be similar to previous years: there will be free face painting, a Baby Burger eating contest at 5 p.m. and of course the kiddie carnival with games. For a $10 donation to MS each kid will get a chance to play each game and (its) a guaranteed prize at each game station. Theyll end up with eight prizes for $10, said Whatley. There will also be a chugging contest for those who want to test their skill. At 7 p.m. were going to a do a root beer chugging contest. Last year we did a shot contest but this year were going with the 32-ounce mugs. Inside there will be the silent auction items waiting to be bid on, and tickets will be sold for the bucket draws. Each staff member does a different one (bucket) so last year we had a lot of different things, we had a fishing rod with some fishing lures, we had hockey cards with bubblegum, we had DVDs with a box of popcorn. Last year was our first time trying it just to get the staff a little more involved, said Whatley. Whatley said he is hoping to have a few businesses pre-order Teen Burgers, which he will then have delivered to the company on the day. There were 556 teen burgers sold last year, $1 from each is also donated to MS, and Whatley would like to see that number increase by a few hundred this year.

Wagons for Wee Ones

Morgan Lee Times Contributor

The Sutherland family put on the second annual Wagons for Wee Ones pancake breakfast and live auction Monday, Aug. 6 to raise money for the childrens charity Pace Kids. Pace Kids is a family focused program that helps with treatment of children with special needs. The interesting thing about Pace Kids is you dont really know about it at all until you have had a child thats been affected with some sort of special needs, said Misty Kolozetti, Fund Development and Marketing Director for Wagons for Wee Ones. The amazing thing about [the Pace Kids] program is that we have essentially pediatric experts. We have some of the best speech pathologists and psychologists and physiotherapists and all the sort of resources that are offered to these children who are faced with multiple challenges. Pace Kids has now celebrated its 17th anniversary and now provides services to over 120 children and their families. Thats kind of the cool thing about Pace Kids, said Kolozetti, is that its resources (are) offered to anyone who needs it. We just wanted to make sure that its still kept that way with the fundraising dollars. Wagons for Wee Ones was exceptionally successful this year with the live auction, raising $8,500 for the charity, $3,500 over their goal. But this event didnt start out with the goal of being a fundraiser. Last year Kolozetti worked with the Make a Wish Foundation where the idea blossomed. I was working with the Make a Wish Foundation and I just wanted to bring together the family of the Chuckwagon

Association and the childrens charity, it wasnt really for any fundraising initiative, it was more just to bring awareness to a childrens charity and give everybody a reason to come together, said Kolozetti. Being immersed in the chuckwagon community growing up (her father is Kirk Sutherland) it was important that she connect the chuckwagon community to the communities they race in. I wanted to take the passion of the community of the chuckwagon association and apply it to the broader community of where were racing, said Kolozetti. Wagons for Wee Ones has decided to fundraise for a different childrens charity every year, and next years charity is yet to be decided. The nice thing about having a childrens charity that impacts southern Alberta or even Strathmore specifically is it just resonates well with the local sponsors so well probably look into something that has outreach to Strathmore and area, she said. Kolozetti is hopeful for the future of this event, especially after the success in the past two years. Everybodys been liking coming together in the morning and hanging out for a bit. I think well build on what we started this year and keep it pretty simple in concept and definitely do it every year, the response has been great, said Kolozetti. Its nice to have a charity that a lot of people dont know about because the $5,000 or $10,000 dramatically impacts the charities, like Pace Kids, quite a bit. Its nice to have a little bit smaller scale charities, said Kolozetti. If youre interested in learning more about the charity Pace Kids visit their website, www.pacekids.ca or contact the Pace Kids office at 403-2347876.

Fantastic weekend comes to an end

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter There may have been last minute management changes, and a missing midway, but that didnt stop this years Strathmore Stampede and rodeo from once again being a success. We had a fantastic weekend, period, said Pascal Del Guercio, rodeo and chuckwagon chairman for the Strathmore Stampede Rodeo Committee. Del Guercio said it was close to a recordbreaking crowd on Saturday night, and the chuckwagon crowd on Monday had been even bigger than they had been anticipating. There are a number of reasons why he thinks Strathmore draws the competitors and spectators the way it does. One reason is, of course, the great the weather the August long weekend is usually known for. Number two, if we put together the contestants and the best rodeo stock people in the industry, the spectators that go to rodeos recognize that and for sure that draws the spectators, said Del Guercio. Theres the Calgary Stampede, the Ponoka Stampede and then the Strathmore Stampede in that order, three of the top rodeos in Canada and definitely ranked in North America. Fred Whitfield whos an eight time world champion was here yesterday (Aug. 6), Cody Ohl a six time world champion was here, Bobby Mote has won four world championships, and those guys are all here along with many others. Del Guercio said the prize money is also the highest in North America offered for the August long weekend, which helps draw in some of those big name competitors. For the last few weeks a rumour has been circulating that the rodeo will be moving to a new weekend in June. While Del Guercio does confirm research had been done about the possibility of switching weekends, the committee has decided against it. We have done some homework and we have decided no, our weekend is good and were going to stay with our weekend. At this point there is absolutely no more research being done on moving it, were going to enjoy the weekend we have and this weekend proved that we have a good weekend, said Del Guercio. We were considering moving only for the reason that the midway and our local people sometimes are gone and they miss out on it. Thats off the table now and were staying where were at and were just going to build on what we have. The hope is to bring in more entertainment for next year. Finding a midway for the August long weekend can be a challenge but Del Guercio said the committee is looking into having a larger midway or possibly send part of their crew to Strathmore. The unofficial results have been posted. Jake Marshall got 85.25 points in bareback riding, taking first place. Chason Floyd with steer wrestling at 3.9 seconds, Dustin Bird and Paul Eaves grabbed the first place spot in team roping. For saddle bronc it was Rylan Geiger with 84.50, Hunter Herrin is in first at 7.4 seconds for tie-down roping. Kelli Tolbert grabbed the first place spot with her run in the ladies barrel racing. Skylar McBride took the top spot in bull riding. Lane Watt is taking home a first place victory in novice saddle bronc, and so is Jacob Stemo in the novice bareback. With a score of 82 Kagen Schmidt beat out his competitors in the junior steer riding. More results on how the weekend went can be found at www.rodeocanada.com.

Kurt Bensmiller went into Mondays race in fifth place, but a run of 1:14.15 was enough to vault him and his Eco Fuel Savers outfit with outriders Shawn Calf Robe and Wayne Wright into first, with a four-day aggregate time of 5:01.39 to win the 2012 Strathmore Stampede Chuckwagon Championship. I knew if I could just get the front end, nobody would be able to catch me in the heat, said Bensmiller. I had to outrun Jerry (Bremner) by a second and hope for help with the rest of it, so it worked out. Ive struggled over the years, I won in 07 and took quite a leave of absence until 2011 before I won. Ive qualified for Calgary every year and thats a big deal, but you make your money of youre winning. Hopefully this (win) is a trend (of whats to come) the next few years. Although he got off to a bit of a slow start, with 10th and 18th place finishes respectively on the first two nights, Bensmiller finished strong, winning day money on Sunday with a time of 1:14.66 and then taking second place on Monday. I always wanted to win Strathmore. It always meant a lot, because it was the tour (final) and my dads won it in years past, said Bensmiller. It has always been a big deal to win some of the same (competitions) hes won. Nobody ever complains when they get a buckle. Kirk Sutherland posted the fastest time of the entire meet with a 1:13.63 in Mondays race, which means he has won day money in eight of his last 14 runs. He also won day money on the opening night of the meet with a time of 1:14.81, but ended up in fourth for the four-day show with an aggregate time of 5:01.79. Rookie driver Jodie Fike had a career best showing for the meet, coming in behind Bensmiller for second overall with a total time of 5:01.54. Jerry Bremner rounded out the top four, placing third with a total time of 5:01.76 over the four races. The leader going into Mondays final race was Rick Fraser who had a lead of 52 one-hundredths of a second over Jordie Fike, but a run of 1:17.83 (which included a two second penalty for wagon interference), dropped him to eighth over all. The weather co-operated for the entire weekend, providing drivers and horses with ideal track conditions and fans with an outstanding set of races to enjoy. The Strathmore win helped put Bensmiller into a tie for second place in the world standings with Luke Tournier at 780 points. Jason Glass leads the worlds with a commanding 867 points, while Kirk Sutherland is in fourth at 769 points. Ive always enjoyed coming here, said Bensmiller. We always seem to pull in a week or two weeks before the event and hang out here. Everyone enjoys it and its a great town to be in. The next stop on the World Professional Chuckwagon Association GMC Pro Tour is Dawson Creek, B.C. for the Battle of the North running Aug. 8-12, followed by the season ending Battle of the Rockies in Rocky Mountain House Aug. 15-19.

Running With the Bulls a stompin success!

Mario Prusina Times Contributor Even after 10 years, the Running With the Bulls is still the signature attraction of the Strathmore Stampede. The marquee event, which took place Aug. 4 and 5 prior to the chuckwagon races, reached the 80 maximum runners with ease and filled the Ag Grounds to capacity on both days. According to Jim Cammaert, the architect of bringing the Running With the Bulls to Strathmore, the success of the event surprises him to this day. I never thought (it would get to 10 years). I thought it was a one shot deal, wed get some press in the paper but it sort of evolved into this, said Cammaert, who stepped down as a director of the Ag Society to become its General Manager a couple of weeks ago. Its unbelievable from the people who buy the tickets and the people who run weve sort of hit a formula that works. Those kids get jacked-up, theyre excited to run and you can tell when they come up there its just straight adrenaline. If you listen to (the opening) prayers, its about overcoming fear and getting out there it takes a lot of courage. You can get all pumped up, but when you see those bulls coming down the track, your heart shrinks up. The Running With the Bulls was such a success that it featured two $1,000 grand-prize winners on the opening run. Lyaltas own Justin Bartelen and Duane Mitchell of Quebec were named the co-winners, while Brad Bergerman of Chestermere received a $150 gift certificate for his efforts. I went last year and it was something different I was more scared, said Bartelen. This year I knew what to expect and it was great. I wanted to get (the bulls attention) because it is no good if they are just running. So I (got his attention) when he was waiting there, looking right at me. He stopped enough so I could (toy) with him a little, but turns out he didnt want to play so he gave me one in the ribs. On the second running on Sunday night, Matthew Kennedy claimed the $1,000 prize after being plowed by a bull midway through the event. He managed to gain his composure after getting hit and completed the run. It was too fast to get scared, said the 22-year-old Airdrie native. It was pure adrenaline, I dont even know what hit me. According to Cammaert, people who grew up around farm animals tend to read the bulls better and know when to get out of the way. If you know how to read animals, its (not as bad),said Cammaert. Kids from the city, they have no clue, so they dont know what they are getting into. Bulls are territorial and if you get in their territory, theyre going to move you out of there.

Softball sisters
Morgan Lee Times Contributor Katie and Brianne Coulter have played softball since they were very young, their hard work paying off this year at their respective league finals. Katie plays on the Calgary Redsocks who won first place in their league final on July 31. Brianne, five years younger than Katie, played in her league final the same day winning second place. These finals were exciting for the Coulter family as the sisters were both competing at such a high level for their favorite sport. It was pretty cool that we were both in the finals, said Katie. My tournament was in Calgary and hers was in Strathmore, said Brianne, all of our games were staggered, so Id play one, and quickly drive back to Strathmore, get to watch hers, leave back for Calgary, play mine, come back to Strathmore watch hers. So I think I watched every single one of her games and she managed to get to two or three of mine. For these girls softball is a way of life, and for their parents too, driving into Calgary twice a week for each of the girls league games. They always love coming to watch us, [they] come to every single game, theyve never missed. They just love it. They drive us every week because they just wouldnt miss a game, said Brianne. Theres a lot of girls who dont get the support. Its really nice [for Katie and I], to have them up in the stands cheering. The sisters love for softball started when they were little girls, with influence from their dad. Well my dad used to play so he got us started in it when we were really young, said Katie. Both girls continued playing as they grew up and love playing together. I guess I kind of helped [Brianne] out as she grew up as well, because theres five years in between us so shes quite a bit younger than I am, said Katie. Usually well go to the diamonds at Brentwood and stuff and hit a few balls and catch a few fly balls, said Brianne. We just sort of grew up playing together and playing catch together and were very close so it was fun to always play together and watch each other kind of grow, said Katie. We always play catch on holidays and just wherever we can play, we play, said Brianne. Now, because Brianne affiliates with Katies team, not only can the girls play catch together, but they can also play games together. I do get to play a couple games with her which is pretty cool. (Its) nice getting to play with your sister, said Brianne. Thats pretty cool when were on the diamond together, said Katie. Its something were trying to get more permanent. Hopefully in the next couple years well get to play on the same team together. The dedication from the whole Coulter family, parents and daughters has certainly contributed to the girls success in softball and to their success in the league playoffs.

The Reds baseball team wins the Provincial Championship

Rebecca FRiesen Times Contributor Baseball season has finished, and the Reds mosquito baseball team knows how to finish with style, by winning the Provincial Championship. Head coach Jason Tanton said this year was very rewarding because all of the players were new to competitive ball, and it is the first year they have all played together. It was a good year overall. [We had a] little bit of a rough start, obviously, theyre all just learning the game, but by the end of the year, they all came together, said Tanton. Tanton said winning the championship was awesome and that seeing the smiles on [the teams] faces made everything worth it. According to Tanton, it is somewhat rare to have a team of players who have never played competitively have such an impressive season, especially since it is tough to win any championship since players must win all the right games and the right times. It was a team effort top to bottom, he says of the win. Their work ethic...it was amazing. Tanton also thanks the parents of the team, who had outstanding dedication and showed up to many practices and games. The highlight of the season was that final out [in the final game of the Championship], Tanton says. The kids went absolutely crazy, and tackled Kaden Zarwony, the one who caught the ball. We had a great season, says Tanton, and reminds all players to keep trying to build their skills. Work ethic and effort is one of the most important things he says. Anyone interested in signing up for competitive Strathmore minor baseball can begin looking in the fall/winter months.

Splashing around
MoRgan Lee Times Contributor The Strahmore Aquatic Centre has been busy this summer and the action continues into August. This month theyre running several different swimming courses. Weve been running courses, all the courses needed for someone to become a lifeguard, said Brenda Conden, the acting Manager for the Stathmore Aquatic Centre, some of them weve had good response to and some of them weve had to cancel. Lack of community interest in these programs has led to the cancellations, as there are a minimum number of participants necessary for the course to run. The Aquatic Centre runs both the Water Safety Instructor course and the National Lifeguard Course. These courses arerunning through August and those interested can call the Aquatic Centre at 403934-3325 for more information and to sign up. There are age and ability requirements for each course. [Participants] need to be 16 years old, so it would usually be the high school students, said Conden. For the Water Safety Instructor you have to have a Swim Kids level 10 swimming ability and for the National Lifeguard Service you just have to be able to swim. Other than these courses, if youre interested in swimming you can go to the pool weekdays from 1-4 p.m. for public swim and 1-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Aquatic Centre also offers free family swim night on Saturday and Sunday from 3-5 p.m. The pool schedule is updated weekly on the aquatic center webpage which can be accessed through the Town of Strathmore website, www.strathmore.ca. For those interested in pool sports other than racing, there is a special event in August for you. We also have, on Aug. 24, free water polo demonstrations, said Conden. You can come in and sign up for it. The Alberta Polo Association will be sending coaches to run the event and teach basic Water Polo techniques. You get to try out some of the skills, said Conden. That event is taking place between 11 a.m. and 12 a.m. and those interested can sign up at the Aquatic Center front desk.
