Teen creates children’s literary magazine

The Moorestown Sun
Baal Chaupaal is a literary
magazine that aims to spread
children’s literacy around the
world. The magazine, created by
Pankuri Jha, 17, came into exis-
tence after she decided she want-
ed to do more for children than
volunteering her time to teach
them.
The magazine’s name, translat-
ed from Hindi, is an interesting
choice for a title and it wasn’t an
easy choice. As a literary maga-
zine that is solely for children,
Jha thought the combination of
Baal – meaning child – and Chau-
paal – meaning a place that guar-
antees freedom of speech and ex-
pression, is just what the title
needed.
Jha wanted to make sure that
all children are sharing their cre-
ativity no matter what the lan-
guage, educational or even eco-
nomic background. After all, the
magazine is supposed to be “by
the children, for the children.”
Jha created the magazine as an
attempt to share the voices of
many children around the world.
She plays a large role in the ed-
iting process, but she still believes
that the magazine is “by the chil-
dren for the children.”
In 2010, Jha spent five weeks at
Ummeed Aman Ghar – an all-
boys shelter in New Delhi – where

building on West Third Street, Tuesday, Aug. 7.
Accidental fire damages
local office building

A recent fire caused damage to
an office building in town.
A portion of North Church
Street was blocked off for about
two hours Tuesday, Aug. 7.
Moorestown Fire Department re-
ceived a phone call at 10:55 a.m.
and responded to the smoky fire
on North Church Street, between
2nd St. and West 3rd St.

Moorestown Fire Chief Antho-
ny Green said they received a call
that smoke was seeping out of a
ceiling fan in one of the office
suites. Patients were in the office
at the time and all got out of the
building safely, Green said.
Mount Laurel, Maple Shade,
Lenola, Riverton, Willingboro
and Delran fire departments also
showed up at the scene within a
matter of minutes.
Suite C and Suite A were both
occupied at the time of the fire.
Smoke formed in between the of-
fice ceiling and the roof, said
Green. There was extensive dam-
age to Suite A, while the other
two suites had just smoke dam-
age.
“The accidental fire is believed
to be caused by a ceiling fan in
Suite C,” Fire Inspector Robert
Worrell said.
The building’s owner, Dr.
Adithya Reddy, appeared at the
scene about 30 minutes after the
fire departments arrived. By that
time, the smoke settled, and he
was searching for the fire inspec-
tor.
“Nobody was hurt. That’s the

Tenure measure a first step
The ultimate goal is to ensure students receive the best education possible

teacher tenure in the state,
it was a landmark moment. But it’s not
the final piece of the puzzle. Not even
close.
The measure, which was supported
by both parties, strives to make teach-
ers more accountable through evalua-
tions and reviews. If they get bad re-
views, they could be removed from the
classroom. The bill also added a year
before tenure is granted.
We’re all for rewarding the best
teachers and getting the bad ones out
of the classroom. In theory, this move
is a step toward that.
But questions remain.

under one administration – a
move to generate cost savings
through shared services -- by au-
thorizing the consolidation of the
school boards into one board.
For the past year, freeholders
have been “cross-pollinating” the
Boards of Education for the
Burlington County Institute of
Technology and Special Services
School District, by appointing
current members to serve on both
boards.
The process, intended to famil-


iarize everyone with each school
district’s operation, mission, and
program, will reach its final stage
on August 23, when the boards
will reorganize and consolidate
into a single “Board of Education
of the Special Services School
District and the Vocational
School District of the County of
Burlington.”
“This merger was intended to
create efficiencies and cost-sav-
ings, which, at the end of the day,
translate into tax dollar savings,”
said Freeholder Director Bruce
Garganio. “We have already seen
significant savings through the

sharing of assets and resources,
and it can only get better.
“The transition into a consoli-
dated administration has been a
smooth one,” Garganio added,
“and everyone involved deserves
credit for making this work.”
Dr. Donald P. Lucas, who has
served as the “shared” superin-
tendent for both schools since
June of 2011, quantified those
savings at $405,000. Some $240,000
of that is attributed to personnel
changes; the remaining $165,000
comes from efficiencies in food
services, transportation, technol-
ogy and security.
“We still have areas to ex-
plore,” said Lucas, “and it should
be easier to advance that agenda
now that all our board members
