ecognized as the industry leader in providing durable post-tensioning and specialty reinforcement systems, VSL designs, manufactures and installs post-tensioning systems and components for both new construction and the repair and modification of existing structures.

Design Support
Because each project presents a unique opportunity, VSL teams with contractors, owners and engineers to evaluate projects and determine optimal solutions. VSLs engineers have extensive training in structural design and are active members of technical organizations such as the PostTensioning Institute (PTI) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

Project Coordination
VSL has developed software that allows digital recognition of post-tensioning drawing entities and automatically generates tendon schedules showing identification tags, quantities, lengths, color codes and tendon elongations. The program also includes automatic generation of support schedules detailing the heights and quantities of the chair supports. Shop fabrication orders are automatically generated and fed directly to computerized strand cutting lines resulting in superior accuracy.

Shear Rails
Developed to mitigate the impact of punching shear at slab-column connections, VSL shear rails consist of large head steel studs welded to flat steel rails. When used at column and slab connections, shear rails increase the shear capacity of the slab. Designed in accordance with current codes, the rails provide designers and contractors with a solution for slabs that is more economical and efficient than stirrups, structural steel elements or column capitals. In addition to being quick and easy to install, VSL shear rails create less congestion. This feature makes them a great alternative to hairpins for anchorage zone reinforcement. Eliminated column capitals reduce formwork costs and provide for more efficient construction. Further, VSL shear rails may enable the use of smaller columns which reduce building mass.

Barrier Cable Systems

VSL supplies and installs complete barrier cable systems. Able to be used for all vehicle and pedestrian barrier needs and compliant with all International Building Code standards, barrier cable systems provide important advantages. One factor is economic efficiency. Because of the high strength-to-weight ratio of the strands, the cables cost less to place than precast panels, traditional cast-in-place or concrete masonry barriers. Aesthetics are another factor. Barrier cables are a visually appealing alternative to traditional systems, such as concrete walls, which can create blind spots or similar hazards. VSL supplies and installs galvanized 1/2, 7-wire steel strands available with an optional plastic coating to enhance appearance and durability. Complete packages can include installation and design of strand, external anchoring devices, plates, cables, wedge sets and stressing equipment.

Unbonded Monostrand Systems

Adaptable to a variety of structures, unbonded monostrand can be easily, rapidly and economically installed. Applications for monostrand systems include elevated slabs, slab-on-grade, beams and transfer girders, joists, shear walls and mat foundations. VSLs monostrand systems use 0.5 and 0.6 diameter strands coated with a layer of specially formulated grease with an outer layer of seamless plastic extruded in one continuous operation to provide protection against corrosion. Each tendon is precisely coiled, cut, labeled, color-coded and delivered to the construction site. A wide variety of anchorage systems are available to meet design specifications. Encapsulated unbonded monostrand systems are used in areas that are subject to corrosive conditions. Strands are protected at the anchorages using greased plastic sleeves and grease-filled end caps. Additionally, anchorage components are fully encapsulated in a high density polyethylene plastic covering and an optional encapsulated intermediate coupler anchorage system can be used to protect the strand at construction joints.

Bonded Multistrand Systems

Extensively used in bridge and transportation structures, bonded multistrand systems have been successfully applied to commercial building construction. A single multistrand tendon can hold up to fifty-five 0.5 or 0.6 strands encased in PT-Plus plastic or steel duct and is fully bonded using a high-performance grout. PT-Plus is a corrugated duct and plastic coupler system that greatly enhances corrosion protection. Positive sealed mechanical connections between duct sections and between ducts and anchorages facilitate installation and increase durability. When bonded multistrand systems are used for large structural members such as beams and transfer girders, design advantages include increased span lengths and load-carrying capacity and reduced deflection. Additionally, because the strands are stressed simultaneously, less labor is required and cost savings are realized.

Bonded Slab Tendons in Flat Plastic Ducts

VSLAB+ Bonded Slab Systems

VSLs VSLAB+ Bonded Slab System consists of fully encapsulated, bonded multistrand (two to five strands) tendons contained in flat plastic ducts filled with a high-performance cementitious grout that bonds the strands to the surrounding concrete. Intermediate anchorages provide continuous encapsulation at construction joints. Tendons are protected by both PT-Plus plastic duct and grout. These bonded multistrand systems have been successfully applied to commercial building, healthcare and parking garage construction by VSL. Benefits include enhanced crack and deflection control and a reduction in reinforcing steel. VSLAB+ allows for thin slab designreducing overall building height which lowers costs for foundation, frame and facade/cladding components. Because bonded tendons may be cut with only localized loss of capacity, another significant advantage of VSLAB+ is the ease of future building modifications. Design advantages include increased span lengths and load-carrying capacities. Additionally, the reduction of mild reinforcing steel minimizes the primary sources of corrosion and significantly reduces life cycle maintenance costs.

Steel Reinforced Polymer (SRP) Composites

Column Strengthening with FRP Composites

External Monostrand Post-Tensioning

For structures requiring structural modifications due to load capacity upgrade, change of use, slab openings, deterioration or construction defects, VSL strengthening systems provide innovative and cost-efficient solutions.

Strengthening with Composite Systems

VSL sheet, rod and plate composites are designed for upgrading the load-carrying capacities of concrete, masonry and timber elements. Additionally, the V-Wrap Carbon and E-Glass FRP systems can be protected to provide ASTM E-84/E-119 Fire Ratings. Hardwire is another family of composite reinforcements made from ultrahigh strength twisted steel wires woven into a durable fabric. When encapsulated in resin, Hardwire forms a high strength reinforcing laminate for structural upgrades of beams and elevated slabs, as well as blast and ballistic upgrades of structures. Hardwire, as well as the V-Wrap Carbon and E-Glass FRP systems are lightweight, durable, non-corrosive and compatible with architectural finishes.

Enlargement and Conventional Methods

Section enlargement and overlay systems are additional solutions available to increase the load-carrying section properties of structural members. VSL engineers carefully design and detail solutions to provide flexural, axial and shear upgrades using reinforced concrete and steel systems that are compatible with the existing structures.

Post-Tensioned Slab Modification

External Monostrand Post-Tensioning System Utilizing VStrand Heat Resistive Tendons

A systematic approach to the design and execution of these projects allows integration of engineering, manufacturing and installation capabilities into a creative, efficient, and cost-effective solution.

Strengthening with Post-Tensioning

Strengthening designs may consist of standard or custom VSL multistrand, monostrand and VStrand tendons and anchorage assemblies. VSLs full range of internal and external post-tensioning systems are suited for flexural, shear and axial strengthening applications in concrete, steel and composite structures. Applied externally or internally, VSL post-tensioning systems help control deflection, are corrosion and fire resistant and reduce concrete mass and building costs.

Post-Tensioned Structure Modification

For structural repairs made necessary by construction errors, slab openings, exposed or cut tendons or environmental issues, VSL is a one source solution. Engineering, manufacturing and installation services can be quickly mobilized into creative, efficient and cost-effective solutions. Post-tensioning repairs may involve special techniques to restore force in the tendons by placing new anchorages and stressing the tendons. Or, as required, replace corroded or fire-damaged tendons. Additionally, VSL can conduct a structural evaluation and work with the owners engineers to provide increased load-bearing capacity.
