There are two methods available for comparing whole numbers. By using these methods we can compare two values at a single time. METHOD 1: Use a number line for comparing whole numbers Number line is a line drawn having numbers from least to greatest. Numbers on the left side will be less than the numbers on the right side.
Numbers on the right side will be greater than the numbers on the left side. METHOD 2: Use place value likes ones, tens and so on. Arrange the digits according to ones place. Start comparing whole numbers from the left on the basis of the digits at each place value position.
Lets take example of comparing whole numbers by these two methods Example of Method 1: Assume a number line having three points a, b and c containing values 700, 800 and 900 , We have two numbers 764 and 854, as 764 is smaller than the 854 we place 764 on the left side of point b and 854 will be placed on the right side of point b. Example of Method 2: Arrange 4,589, 4,557 and 4,584 from smallest to largest. 4,557 is less than both 4,589 and 4,584 since 5 < 8 in tens place. 4,584 is less than 4,589 since 4 < 9 in the ones place So, after comparing whole numbers the output in ascending order will be 4,557, 4,584 and 4,589 Comparing whole numbers with the numbers in the form of p/q i.e. rational numbers we convert the fraction numbers into decimal numbers and then we compare the numbers. Remember that on number line values move from lowest to highest and the direction of the symbol (< or >) always opens towards the greater number.
