Rigging and Launching: 1hr Rig the boat involving students, identify correct names for sheets etc. Explain Briefly. Have students identify wind direction, strength and launching conditions, adjust equipment accordingly. Launch and transfer to pontoons. Embark noting balance. Depart, awareness of wind direction. Joyride. Familiarisation with controls. Instructor at helm, students allocated tasks. Orientation and basic boat control. 1hr Demonstrate Lying to position. Pull in main to turn towards wind. Pull in Jib to turn away from wind. Relate changes in boat direction to the wind (i.e. Turn into/away from the wind). Demonstrate effect of raising centreboard. Demonstrate No Go Zone. Students practice. Land Drill: Going about. (Possibly tied to pontoon.) hr Relevant to Centre or Aft Mainsheet. Allow student to practice. Centre Main Check area clear Back foot across Ready About Lee Ho Push stick away As boom comes across swap sides facing forward. Centre Tiller behind your back.(loose grip) Sit and swap hands. Relevant points for crew. Keep Dinghy flat. Uncleat Jib on ready about. Move over as boom moves over. Reset Jib. Tacking Practice 1hr Reach to reach. Boat speed (fast enough to tack). Good tacking is based on good foot position and balance. Going to windward. 1hr Demonstrate sail flap as boat turns windward. No Go Zone. Explain concept of beating to windward. Take boat downwind and set student task of beating to a windward point. Use flapping jib luff as indication of no go zone. Explain why angle between wind and sails remains the same, despite boat direction. Discourage over steering. 5 Essentials hr Demonstrate changes in essentials affect boat Sail Setting: Just not flapping. Aft Main Check area clear. Swap hands, front foot across. Balance: Upright for minimum drag, heeled turns boat. Trim: Close hauled better when weight forward. Centreboard: Different settings for different points of sail. Course steered: Tides, Leeway, Hazards, Wind shadow.

Downwind 1hr Training run. Demonstrate jib when in dead run. Changes in direction require changes in 5 Essentials. Practice turning from reach to training run. Avoid gybing. Demonstrate Gybe. Land Drill: Gybing hr Relevant to Centre or Aft Mainsheet. Allow student to practice. Centre Main Check area clear. Back foot across. Stand by to Gybe Rotate tiller extension. Stand in centre of boat. Gybe Ho. Push stick behind. As boom comes across control with falls, facing forward. Centre tiller behind your back.(loose grip). Sit and swap hands. Relevant points for crew. Keep Dinghy flat. Uncleat Jib on Stand by to Gybe Move over as boom moves over. Reset Jib. Gybing Practice. 1hr Consider Reefing Allow lots of room Triangular course. 1hr Smooth with helm in control. Capsize Recovery Drill. (SAFETY COVER!) As long as it takes. Strictly helm in control. Good communication. Everyone to transom. Helm takes mainsheet Safety Line. Crew opens centreboard (Warning to Helm!) Crew throws jibsheet Helm climbs and rights boat. Crew scooped. Crew lifts Helm into boat, dunking if necessary. Aft Main Check area clear. Stand by to Gybe Change to dagger grip. Stand in centre of boat holding falls. Gybe Ho. Push tiller towards old seat. As boom comes over control with falls, centre tiller. Swap sides facing rear. Sit. Swap hands.
