he start of the school year is right around the corner.
New backpacks, sneakers, books, and the back to
school excitement are all piled into one car where
many parents are looking forward to their kids get-
ting out of the house and back in the classroom. Before you
send them off, Moorestown Superintendent Brian Betze
wants to fill both parents and children in on whats going
on this school year.
There are no new changes to any of the policies and pro-
cedures or activities, but there is a possibility for a new
after school program.
We are looking at the possibility of creating an after-
school academic academy for students, said Betze. We

The Moorestown Sun
The Moorestown Historical So-
ciety had its first Coffee Klatch
Fundraiser on Wednesday, Aug.
15, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Smith-
Cadbury Mansion on 12 High
Street.
We plan to make this a month-
ly event, Moorestown Historical
Society President Lisa Hammell
said.
The Coffee Klatch on Wednes-
days was set up to not only raise
money for the Smith-Cadbury
Mansion, but to bring the resi-
dents of Moorestown together.
Moorestown is filled with in-
teresting people who are experts
on a wide variety of subjects,
Hammell said.
The first Coffee Klatch had an
interesting subject that most have
never heard about the King
Midget kit car and Midget Mo-
tors.
Worlds number one fun car
is what Dewitt Peterson noted as
the marketing slogan for the car.
He described the car as an easy
car to maintain.
[The owners of Midget Mo-
tors] didnt want to make some-
thing that is too difficult for peo-
ple to keep up with, Peterson
said.
Peterson owns two Midget Kit
cars and is a member of the King
Midget fan club.
Four or five years ago, Peterson
was advised to do something out
of the ordinary after his wife
died. It turned into a hobby for
him. He told the history of the
King Midget Kit car and was will-
ing to answer any questions the
audience had about the cars.

W
ith schools preparing to
open their doors soon, now
is a good time to talk about
the upcoming academic year.
At The Sun, were all about commu-
nity news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meet-
ings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help.
When students achieve in the class-
room, in the arts, in sports, etc., we
want to hear about it, so that we can
share that news with the entire com-
munity.
Making the honor roll to winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-cur-
ricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in.
If youre a parent, and your child
does something special, shoot us an
email. Include a photo, if possible.
If youre a teacher or principal, and
you have a special event coming up or
there is other news that your home-
town should know about, tell us about
it. If possible, well have a reporter
present to cover the event or write a
story and take photos. If not, well fig-
ure out a way to get your news into the
paper, one way or another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young peo-
ple is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
And there are a lot of young people
doing good these days.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordi-
nary to help someone or have an out-
standing accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so
that we can share it.
in our opinion
School bells to ring soon

School news
With the start of a new school year
upon us, we want to invite everyone to
share their news with us. From the
classroom to extra-curricular activities,
let us know about what is happening in
your school, and well spread the word.

Congressional candidate from New Jerseys Third District Shelley Adler recently stopped by CareOne in
Moorestown. She engaged with residents in an open dialogue about some important issues. The discus-
sion ranged from energy independence to services for veterans and seniors. Many seniors aired concerns
about the viability of the Medicare system upon which most are dependent for their health care needs.
Concerns about the environment ranked high on the lists of concerns for a large group. When it was all
said and done, the residents at CareOne had a better idea of who Adler was and what changes she would
pursue. Adler walked away with an even deeper understanding of her constituents concerns.

are always looking for different

Betze said the teachers and ad-
ministrators are looking at a cur-
riculum change. The national
Core Content Standards and the
Moorestown school curriculum
will align to create a more effi-
cient and up-to-date curriculum.
The staff works on updating
and revising all content areas
each year in order to stay in front
of current trends and changes in
the field, Betze said.
So far, no new construction is
being done or has been done on
the schools, but improvements
should always be taken into con-
sideration.
There are no new building
renovations occurring this year.
However, in my travels through-
out the buildings, the district may
need to explore some facility im-
provements in the next few
years, Betze said.
Transitioning into a new at-
mosphere is difficult. Its a scary
feeling to start at the bottom as a
new student in a new school, but
there is help to get both parents
and children through.
The first day of school for all
students is Sept. 6. The district of-
fers a transition day for children
in kindergarten, fourth grade,
seventh grade and ninth grade,
Sept. 5. Transition day is there to
help students adjust to a new
building. Parents are advised to
check the schools webpage con-
sidering events vary from school
to school. Betze also has advice
for children going to a new school
and parents who will worry about
their children.
The principals and teachers
are right there to help anyone
who may need assistance, said
Betze. Come to school prepared
to work hard and give it your best
effort every day.
As the new Moorestown school
district superintendent, Betze is
looking forward to the school
year.
I am anticipating an excellent
year for staff, students and par-
ents, Betze said.
New technological feature for
the Board of Education
During the Aug. 21 Board of
Education meeting, school busi-
ness administrator and board sec-
retary Lynn Shugars started off
the meeting with something new
the beginning of paperless
meetings.
Although the entire meeting
wasnt completely paperless,
Shugars said the plan is for the
board members to use iPads for
every meeting instead of printing
large amounts of paper.
[We] decided to use the iPad
because of its battery life,
Shugars said.
The iPad is also easier to set up
than a computer, said Shugars. It
will also give the board members
a chance to access the agendas
quickly and have more time to re-
view agendas before meetings.
Board members, as well as par-
ents, are asked to provide any
feedback when accessing the
meeting agendas.
I think its a step in the right
direction, Betze said.
It will take a while for the
board members to get used to
viewing and accessing the agen-
das from the iPads, but Shugars
said there would be a paper copy
of the agenda when requested.
She is hoping that the meeting
will be completely paperless by
the September meeting.
If we dont start, we are never
going to get used to it,
Moorestown Board of Education
President, Don Mishler said.

The Midget Motors was found-
ed in 1946 by Claud Dry and Dale
Orcutt in Athens, Ohio, and last-
ed until 1970, but it wasnt very
well known. Both Dry and Orcutt
wanted to avoid making a car that
needed servicing, said Peterson.
According to Peterson, the car
started off in a kit where the
parts would get mailed out and
would need to be put together.
The car also is a 2-speed automat-
ic with a 1 cylinder engine and
came in a stock crme color.
Midget Motors made three
models of the Midget car; Peter-
son had the second and third
model.
Peterson had plenty of books to
show along with pictures from
the Internet, but unfortunately no
car. He was unable to start it be-
fore the fundraiser event, but he
said anyone is more than happy
to see the car if they wanted to.
More Coffee Klatch fundraisers
are expected and each will be dif-
ferent, depending on who is
speaking.
We welcome everyone to join
us at our events to learn more
about this fascinating town,
Hammell said
Admission for the Coffee
Klatch is $10 and the Moorestown
Historical Society is always look-
ing for an interesting historical
subject for the Coffee Klatch
Fundraiser.

you would like to share with

he supplies are purchased, the backpacks are
packed... the kids are back in school
again! Now is the perfect time for busy
Moms to take a night, recharge, and learn a
few things ourselves. Join us as we share our
back to school stories and concerns.
Dr. Richard Selznick, Director of the Cooper
Learning Center, will help us process our
thoughts and answer questions about various
struggles our school-agers might be fac-
ing, including social skills, excessive use
of technology, classroom disengagement,
and more. Dr. Selznick will also tackle the
tough issue of bullying - an eye-opening
perspective on what it means in today's
world and what parents need to know.
