Call for help New Guardian in Jerusalem Appointments

THIOPIA: Many countries of North Africa have been recently hit by drought and famine, causing suffering especially among women and children. One of these countries is Ethiopia, where our Brothers are present. The Viceprovincial Minister called on the Orders Solidarity Ofce for help. At this moment, writes Br Isaias Gaetano, in Dobbo, Boditti, Ashira, Tambaro, Kobbo and Midagidu, where we have fraternities there is great lack of food and the people are suffering from malnutrition. The Brothers are doing what they can and have launched a project to help about 1000 persons, especially families, and this will be carried on for two to three months. The greatest problems facing these places, as well as the rest of the country, are drought, poverty, lack of food, scarce medical resources, the inaccessibility to education, lack of knowledge about HIV/AIDS, environmental degradation and the lack of accessible drinking water. When the project was studied by the Ofce of Economic Solidarity of the Order, the General Minister appealed to all: Dear Brothers, let us help our Ethiopian Capuchin Brothers face this tremendous emergency which has hit several zones of their country. Let us give a helping hand because they should not stand by and witness such a catastrophe without being able to offer some assistance. Every contribution will be accepted with gratitude and will be sent as soon as possible to our Brothers so that they themselves can distribute among those hit hardest by this catastrophe. We count on your compassion and generosity!

Constitutions: Twelfth Plenary Session

Commission for the Missions

OME: From 4-14 July 2011 the Constitutions Commission met once again at the General Curia to continue the second stage of its work, examining the responses from the various jurisdictions of the Order to the proposed revision. The feedback on each chapter, paragraph and number was carefully studied, and chapters V, VI, VII, IX, X, of the Constitutions have now been revised in the light of the comments received. The Commission had scheduled three full weeks for this XII Session (4-23 July), but the work was nished with time to spare, which meant that the Commission was able to meet the General Minister on July 13th, to exchange views on how best the General Chapter might approach its work on the revised text next year if, that is, it decides to accept the Commissions draft as a working paper. These thoughts on a possible methodology will be sent on to the General Denitory and to the preparatory commission of the General Chapter itself. The next plenary session will be held during November 7-26 at the International College and will work on chapters VIII, XI and XII, with a nal review of chapter 1 and the entire revised draft, before it is sent out to the Order.

RASCATI: During July 12-14, 2011, the International Commission for the Missions met for the third time. Its duty is to help the Secretariat to animate the Circumscriptions to be more conscious about our evangelizing mission which is the principal aim of our Order. At the centre of the discussions were the guidelines for our missionary activities. The resulting document will serve to organise better our activities and to promote the missionary spirit of the Order.

Competition to design the Chapters Logo

OME: The General Chapter is fast approaching and preparations are already under way. During the rst meeting of the Preparatory Commission it was decided to launch a competition to design the ofcial Chapter Logo. We hope to involve the largest possible number of brothers, and to announce the winner by January 2012, so that the Logo can begin to be used well in advance of the Chapter itself. The designs for the Logo, in colour, either originals or in a good-resolution electronic format, must reach the General Secretarys ofce by December 15, 2011. They will be submitted to the General Denitory, who will choose the one that will become the ofcial Logo of the General Chapter. For further information visit our website www.ofmcap.org

Boccellis voice meets

Br Raniero Cantalamessa
ARINA DI PIETRASANTA, Italy: An unusual meeting between the singer Andrea Boccelli and Br. Raniero Cantalamessa, preacher of the Apostolic Household, took place on Sunday, July 3, 2011, during an Incontri al Caff (Coffee House Meetings) organized by La Versiliana, an Italian cultural foundation. Br. Raniero spoke about the desire for a successful and happy life, which is common to believers and non-believers alike, and how faith in Christ is the best way to reach such objectives. Boccelli, on the other hand, sang some of his most successful and well known numbers. The event was well attended. Br. Raniero said he is ready for other such meetings.

OME: The two processes on the life, virtues and fame of holiness of Br Arsenio of Trigolo (18491909) and on the reputed miraculous healing obtained through his intercession were deposited long ago at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. The Decree of Validity of the rst was issued on June 15, 2011 while that on the reputed miracle was published in the year 2000. During the last months, the Positio on the two processes have been printed and forwarded to Rome. They deal with the texts that will be examined by Church authorities throughout all stages which lead to the pronouncement of the holiness of Br Arsenio. The rst decisive appointment for the acknowledgement of the heroicity of the virtues is xed for September 27, 2011.

Otto von Hapsburg laid to rest in the Capuchin Crypt

IENNA, Austria: On Saturday, July 16, Otto von Hapsburg, the son of the last Austrian Emperor, was laid to rest in the Imperial Crypt beneath the Capuchin church in Vienna, where since 1633 all his ancestors have been buried. Austria honoured him with a solemn funeral in which the highest State authorities and the crown heads of half of Europe participated. The cortege left the Cathedral passing through the city centre up to Heldenplatz where a 21-gun salute was red. From there the body was taken to the Capuchin crypt. Here, following an old ritual, the herald knocked twice at the door and listed all the deceaseds imperial titles, but Br. Gottfried, guardian of the crypt, responded, We do not know him. The third time he was presented as a poor sinner, and the doors were opened. For Otto, the formula was modied by introducing his bourgeois titles of Minister of the European Parliament and that of a citizen who had been awarded the medal for having fought a decadeslong battle for the freedom of peoples and for justice. The emperors last son was heralded as a simple European citizen.

ANOPPELLO, Italy: The Sanctuary of the Holy Face at Manoppello announces the exhibition entitled, The image of Christ through the face of the Virgin, which will be held in the exhibition hall of the well-known sanctuary of Lourdes. It will open on September 1 and will continue up to October 2, 2011. This extraordinary event was made possible through the help of the bishop of the diocese of Tarbes-Lourdes, Mgr Philippe Perrier, after he visited the sanctuary of Manoppello in April of last year. On that occasion Mgr Perrier was very much struck by his encounter with the Holy Face. In the presence of the Archbishop of Chieti, Mgr Bruno Forte, he stated that he had seen in the sufferings of the Holy face at Manoppello the same sufferings of Our Lady at Lourdes. The exhibit consists of a series of panels in various languages which were realised in conjunction with Prof. Heinrich Pfeiffer S.J. and the collaboration of Sr Blandina Paschalis Schlmer. They illustrate the history and the signicance of the Holy Face, a comparison with the principal iconographies of the face of Christ in art and with the Holy Shroud and testimonials from the visit of H.H. Pope Benedict XVI. A signicant part of the exhibit deals with the relation between the Holy Face and the face of the Madonna in her various expressions of devotion and faith which are common at Lourdes and Manoppello, with the faces of sick people in their sufferings as pilgrims. The organisational phase of the exhibition was preceded by a visit to Lourdes by the Capuchin Provincial Minister of Abruzzi, Br Carmine Ranieri. Because of its importance, he involved all the fraternity of the whole Province.

Exhibition of the Holy Face at Lourdes

After the Madrid WYD 04

ADRID: Capuchin friars from numerous countries converged on the capital of Spain with their youth groups to experience, together with the Holy Father, an encounter with Jesus at World Youth Day 2011. Among those participating were two hundred young people belonging to GiFra (Franciscan Youth) or other Capuchin-led youth groups from various regions of Italy, along with about thirty friars and some Franciscan sisters. The General Minister was also present for the event. In the words of one of the participants, Br Nicola Verde, The otherwise-spacious Capuchin Friary of El Pardo, which hosted our group, was hit by a tidal wave of happiness and exuberance. The Guardian, Br Jaime, gave us a warm, simple welcome, and his eyes betrayed his joy at seeing so many young people. Im dying! Im dying! Whats the matter, brother? In short, this was the experience of fraternity as lived by Saint Francis that the General Minister shared with us during the Mass. How do we respond to the Lords call? Is it a duty to be performed? Is it something to be done when I feel like it? Or do we respond as Francis did, who chose the Lord

Jesus? The General Minister then invited us to allow ourselves to be transformed, to choose to be Christians, as Francis did. On Saturday morning, we set off on pilgrimage from the friary of El Pardo to the much-anticipated Vigil. After walking for hours under the summer sun we arrived at Cuatro Vientos, where the Church had gathereda truly young, universal Church. The whole world was there! To the Holy Fathers words, I am proud of you, the crowd responded with the chant, Esta es la juventud del Papa (These are the Popes youth). Just as Saint Francis desire to follow Christ was conrmed by the Lord Pope, we set off again for the New Evangelization with the following message: Dear young people, thanks to the risen Christ, your life is planted and built up in God, rm in the faith. In this certainty, go forth from Madrid and announce to everyone what you have seen and heard. Respond with joy to the Lords call; follow Him and remain united with Him always, and you will bear much fruit! Just as the Blessed John Paul II did before him, Benedict XVI is sending out youth to announce Jesus to a world that is, especially in the northern hemisphere, strongly secularized.
