How to Add Integers: Adding integers is a lot easier than it looks. On a standard number line, 0 should always be in the middle. Then when you go to the right of the 0, is all positive numbers going up. All of the numbers on the left of 0, are negative numbers, which are counting up. If you ever add a positive number to a negative number, it always goes down the number line. For example, if you added (-7) to 4, you would get -3. This is because -7 is 7 spots away from 0, and you always go up the number line when adding a positive number. Its just like subtracting 7 from 4, to get 3, but you add the symbol on the greater number in the equation, so it would be -3.

When adding two numbers with opposite symbols, it depends on which number is greater. For example, when adding (-7) with 4, -7 is obviously the greater number, so the answer will have a negative sign. However, if you did the problem 8 + -6, then your answer would be positive.

When a negative and a positive counter comes together, you subtract it from the problem. So that means two yellows are left in the problem below, making the answer 2.

4 yellows, and 2 reds, half of the yellows are above the reds, so that means that those four are out of the equation leaving 2 yellows, making the problem 4- (-2) = 2.

There are 6 yellows and 5 reds, there are more yellows than reds. There are 6 reds and 6 yellows, so they go out of the problem leaving 1 yellow.

If there are 4 reds and 3 yellows, and there are only 3 yellows, then that means you can only take out four reds as well, leaving 1 red.

There are 5 yellow counters, and 2 red counters, and four of them are matched up. If three of the yellow counters dont have any reds to be matched up with, then the three of the yellow counters are the answer to the problem.

If there are 2 yellows, and 1 red, then that means only 1 yellow would go with the 1 red, because no other yellows can be paired up with any other reds. Now there is only one yellow counter remaining, equaling +1.

Three yellows, two reds, subtracting 3 from 2 would get 1.

If you add together two negative counters, then you would add the counters together.

If a yellow and a red come together, they both disappear. But if you add two reds, then they add together.
