Program Purpose The purpose of the Reuter Family YMCA Art Program is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children and adults of all ages to develop their unique creativity.

ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTORS


Brad Pomeroy Brad Pomeroy is an award winning artist and art instructor residing in Asheville. For nearly 20 years Brad has taught, inspired and challenged creative minds in the disciplines and joy of drawing, cartooning, painting, collage, photography and digital arts. He attained a BFA in design, illustration, and photography from the Cleveland Institute of Art. Brad received many awards for his artistic achievements in both the commercial and fine art fields. His work has been displayed in Washington, DC art galleries and is currently on display in local Asheville art galleries. Richmond Smith Richmond has been teaching private art classes out of his studio since August of 2006. He currently also teaches art classes to children at Rainbow Mountain Childrens School and adults with disabilities at Open Hearts Art Center. Prior to teaching privately, he taught in public school since 2003 at various grade levels including the Literacy through the Arts Program from the Asheville Art Museum, and most recently at Westview Middle School in Goose Creek, SC. He holds a B.F.A in Studio Art (painting, sculpture) from Western Carolina University and an art education degree from University of North Carolina at Asheville. Andrew Young Andrew Young is an art educator with a BFA from Alfred University in printmaking and photography and a K-12 art teachers license from UNCA. He has lived and photographed in Vermont, Hawaii and now North Carolina. In addition to his photography, Andrew has also been working in the Y's membership department of for 3 years and is excited to share his knowledge and expertise with the community. INTRO TO PHOTOGRAPHY

BEGINNING WATERCOLOR

FOUNDATION DRAWING

For Ages 13+


Do you want to take control of your camera and move from snap shooter to photography enthusiast? In this beginners class, you will learn fundamental photography techniques and how to apply them to real world situations. Your camera will be demystified as you gain sound knowledge that will help take your creative photography to the next level in a fun and laid back environment. Participants must have access to a camera with manual controls (either film or digital). If you are unsure if your camera has manual controls, email the instructor at ayoung@ymcawnc.org to find out. Remember to always bring your camera to class!

For Ages 13+


This class will help individuals develop an understanding of the use of watercolor. The unique characteristics of this transparent medium will allow students to make conscious decisions regarding color, value, and composition. Working from both photographs and life, well cover basic drawing, composition, color mixing and media application. Cool and warm themes will be explored in observing the dimensional effects of light and shadow on our floral and landscape elements. Various size brushes, stroke applications, and techniques will be explored including wet-in-wet, dry brush and resist.

For Ages 13+


This class is designed to inspire artists in the foundations of drawing. Participants will learn to see, interpret, and draw in both familiar and unfamiliar ways. Using various pencils, techniques, and types of paper, well explore important drawing techniques including line, stroke and value. While incorporating the all important line-toshape-to form process, well create portrait and still life studies from photographs and still life studio set ups. The uses of light, mid-tone, and shadow will further guide you towards greater understanding of the subject matter.

Drop-in studio time. Bring your work in progress - crochet, knitting, painting anything! Enjoy fellowship and a cup of coffee in our new Art Studio space. No registration required, just drop in.

For Ages 16+


Come enjoy our studio space to work on your scrapbooking with other scrapbook enthusiasts. Its a great time to share your creativity with others. No registration required, just drop in.

ARTIST DEMONSTRATIONS

For All Ages


Get a chance to see Ashevilles finest artists demonstrate their art medium. Have a cup of coffee, while previewing art techniques that may be taught in future classes. Check the artist demonstrations flyer for the monthly line up. No registration required, just drop in.
