Notes From the Pastor: I hope greeting everyone a happy Labor Day weekend would really mean happiness to all of you! We know during this time, many of our brothers and sisters are still out of job or whose salary are very much well below what is needed to sustain the needs of the family. At the same time many of those who are working are very much stressed in their job. One of the reasons are longer working hours. The US Department of Labor data shows Americans are working longer hours, but making less money. With this working condition, this labor day celebration is another time for us to reflect upon the gift of labor that God has given us and the gospel imperative of respecting and protecting the dignity of every person. Our Catholic faith is very rich in its social teaching which has been handed on and made relevant through the ages from the early times of Christianity up to the present time. From the New Testament we can read several passages where we are reminded of their importance. In fact in Matthew 25, we will be divided and judged based upon what we do to the least of our brethren. In the modern times, the church magisterium has continually reminded us of this gospel imperative: Rerum Novarum (Latin for On the New Things) is an encyclical issued by Pope Leo XIII on May 15, 1891. It was an open letter, passed to all Catholic bishops, that addressed the condition of the working classes. Forty years after Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum, Pope Pius XI, issued 15 May 1931 the encyclical Quadragesimo Anno (Latin for In the 40th Year). While Leo XIII addressed the condition of workers, Pius XI discusses the ethical implications of the social and economic order. He pointed out that arising from unrestrained capitalism and totalitarian communism come the major dangers for human freedom and dignity. He also calls for the reconstruction of the social order based on the principle of solidarity and subsidiarity. The Blessed John Paul II has written 3 encyclicals on this matter and finally Pope Benedict XVI wrote Deus Caritas Est (2005), and Caritas in Veritate (2009). All these teachings would remain just teachings if they are not being put into practice. This condition also reminds us of 1921 which most of you are familiar with. From December 12 to 14, 1921, in support of their protesting husbands and sons over unfair labor practices and the exploitation of workers, a group of southeast Kansas wives, mothers, and sisters marched from coal camp to coal camp to protest the hiring of the scab labor. As we celebrate Labor Day let us continue to pray for a Christian conscience for everyone both employers and employees that Gods will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Finally, I am urging you all again to join us for our parish picnic on Sunday, and the mass with the bishop September 9th at 10:30AM. Labor Day Although not as uniquely American a holiday as Thanksgiving, Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements that American workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Labor chose September for this annual salute to working men and women. The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. In 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday. Americas labor force has taken us to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known. Years ago, the dignity of labor was spoken by Pope Paul VI when he stated, The reverence the Church has for labor is evident. She sees in these men and women their dignity and their equality, the sacred individual upon whose face is impressed a divine likeness. While we honor American workers, these past several Labor Days havent been as happy as wed like, due to the recession and the loss of many jobs. The Church asks us to pray for those families who suffer job losses and to assist materiality as much as we can to shelters, food banks, and good-will centers. The downturn in the economy touches us all. Im sure you know of someone who lost his or her job. Our son-inlaw, a construction engineer, lost steady employment nearly two years ago in Kansas City. He works small jobs when he finds them. Our daughter, who worked part-time, now has a bull-time position in order to keep their five children in Catholic schools. Extend a hand to someone in need, for today, its your friend or neighbor; tomorrow, it may be you or I. The world isnt as secure as it was when we were growing up. Change has become the norm, rather than the exception, which means that were not certain as to what the future will bring. Lets celebrate Labor Day for all who know the joy of having a job and pray for breadwinners who are out of work, giving some thought as to how we might help them, even in a small way.
