complete the paragraphs:
(1) LANs are broadly divided into ( a ), star, and ( b ) types according to their
configuration.
(2) A LAN is made up of the following elements:
A cable connecting between devices is called a ( c ).
A device on the end system side that connects a device and a transmission medium is
called a ( d ).
· A device that connects between LANs is called a ( e ).

2. The statements given below pertain to the LAN. Select the correct statements
(1) Unlike the WAN, the LAN entails the user to lay and manage a communications line
by himself or herself.
(2) Using a LAN, the user can share files and printers.
(3) LANs are broadly divided into backbone LANs and branch LANs.
(4) End systems of different types cannot be connected to a LAN.

3. Explain the backbone LAN and branch LAN briefly.

4. Select the correct statements about the control of CSMA-based LANs.

a. A node that obtained a message (token) with access control transmits data.
b. Data can be transmitted even when the transmission channel is busy.
c. Data is transmitted and received in the unit of a fixed-length cell.
d. CSMA-based LAN control is used in bus or star configuration networks but not
used in a wireless LAN.
e. Data transmitted from a station arrives at all other stations.

5. Select the protocol that is adopted in ARPANET, that is commonly used in

UNIX and other environments to mutually connect computer systems, and that
corresponds to the third and fourth layers of the OSI reference model.
a. FTP b. HDLC c. NFS
d. SMTP e. TCP/IP

6. Fill the parentheses in the following paragraphs with appropriate words or

phrases to complete the paragraphs:
(1) The IEEE802.3 standards include ( a ), 10BASE2, ( b ), 1BASE5, and
10BASE-F.
(2) In a token-ring system, a ( c ) that controls access control is circulating over
the ring. An end system that has a transmission request can gain access control
when it receives ( c ). It then converts the ( c ) to a ( d ) and places it on the
ring with the transmitted data appended to it. The ( d ) is received by the
destination end system, then returned to the ( e ). The ( e ) end system, after
confirming that the destination end system has received the data, converts the
( d ) to a ( c ) and places it on the ring.
(3) Logical link control provides ( f ) and connection-oriented type services.
Ordinary LANs use the ( f ) services.

8. Select the correct statements that explain the advantages of introducing routers in a
LAN.
a. New nodes can be added to the LAN easily.
b. The length of the transmission channel in a LAN is limited. Routers are used to
construct a LAN that goes beyond this limitation.
c. Routers allow LANs whose protocols differ in all layers of the OSI reference model
to be mutually connected.
d. The number of devices connected to the networks and their operating status can be
controlled at a center.
e. A router identifies data that need not be routed to remote networks, thus precluding
the occurrence of unnecessary traffic.

9. Select incorrect statements from the following statements about FDDI.

a. The transmission speed is on the order of 100M bits/second.
b. The transmission media include optical fiber and co-axial cables.
c. Originally, the spread of FDDI has begun as a trunk LAN (backbone LAN) that
connects two or more ordinary LANs.
d. The token-passing system is adopted.
e. The dual-ring network configuration is also used.

10. Which of the following devices connects together two or more LANs and
distributes or exchanges information using the destination address in the network
layer?
a. Communication server b. Transceiver c. Bridge
d. Repeater e. Router

11. We plan to install branch LANs (CSMA/CD) in divisions. Determine the layout of
the cables and attaching devices of the LANs under the conditions given below.
① Current network status
A backbone LAN is already installed in the building. 10BASE5 cables are
already laid out in each division (routers are installed to connect to the backbone
LAN but they are not yet connected to the 10BASE5 cables).
② Number of end systems
There are 15 end systems with each end system is provided with a 10BASE-T
LAN adapter.
③ Available LAN hardware and corresponding symbols to be drawn in the figure
Transceiver: 2 units MAU
Multiport transceiver: 1 unit MPT
This MPT has four ports for end systems and one port for the transceiver cable that
is to be connected to a co-axial cable.
HUB: 2 units HUB
This HUB has 8 ports (can connect 8 end systems) and can connect to a 10BASE5
network (provided with a port for a transceiver cable). The HUB supports cascade
connection.
Twisted-pair cable: 15
Transceiver cable: 4
④ A router must be connected to a branch LAN with a transceiver cable.

addresses as shown in the figure. Answer the most appropriate inter-LAN connection
equipment that are to be installed at locations ① to ⑦.
There are two buildings named Bldg. A and Bldg. B which are connected with an optical
fiber cable.
