Introduction

Steels are used in a greatest variety of applications of all engineering fields. As such, it is important for those involved in metallurgy, mechanical, production, manufacturing, automobile and chemical engineering and construction to have an understanding of what steels are, and how they behave. It is also important to understand how they can be made stronger and how such processes can alter the properties of steels in either favorable or unfavorable ways. This short course provides this knowledge to those who, while not specialists in metals (i.e., metallurgists), would benefit from such an understanding. This short course also provides a platform for those who wish to pursue their research in advanced heat treatment and surface hardening technologies. Topics in this program are chosen to adequately cover all areas related to ferrous metallurgy and heat treatment. Starting with pure iron and steel, basic metallurgy background to understand the microstructural development such as solutions, phase diagrams, the Iron-Carbon phase diagram, and effect of alloying elements; advanced heat treatment and surface hardening techniques will be covered. An emphasis will be provided on new innovative heat treatment processes such as microwave and vacuum carburizing, fluidized bed heat treatment; plasma, laser and electron beam based heat treatment methods; polymer quenching technology etc. After completion of this course, the participant should be able to: Identify new trends and advances in heat treatment of steels for their future research assignments Describe how steels can be heat treated, and why; Recognize how steels can be strengthened by heat treatment Determine why steels are not behaving as expected and can be made to behave as needed, Choose what steels and heat treatment methods can be adopted for specific combinations of properties.

Faculty Apart from the parent department, experts from industries will also be invited to deliver lectures in the program. Target Audience: The program is open to the engineering teachers with Metallurgical, Mechanical, Production, Automobile, and Chemical Engineering background; and industrial personnel (superintendents, technicians and operators) involved in heat treating, component designing, metal processing and individuals wishing to better understand the role of metals and alloys and their heat treatment. Course Fee: Engineering teachers and participants from industry will have to deposit an amount of Rs. 2000/- and Rs. 5,000/- respectively towards registration fee. How to apply: Applications (can be downloaded from the website: www.nitw.ac.in) in the prescribed format duly sponsored by the Head of the Institution along with a DD, favoring, Director, NIT Warangal payable at SBH, NIT Warangal Branch (code no. 20149) should reach the Coordinator on or before 30th June 2012. Applications without the requisite DD will not be considered. Selection: The number of participants (both engineering teachers and industrial personnel) is limited to 40. The selected participants will be informed by e-mail / phone by 10th July 2012. Accommodation: The participants will be provided free boarding and lodging. Participants will not be entitled for payment of any TA/DA.

About the Institute and Warangal

National Institute of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering College), Warangal is the first among 17 RECs that was setup in 1959 as a joint venture of the Government of India and the State government. Over the years it has established itself as a premier Institution imparting technical education of a very high standard leading to B.Tech degrees in various branches of engineering and M.Tech and Ph.D. programs in various specializations. With a view to give further impetus to the technical education, the Central Government upgraded the RECs into NITs and conferred the Institute of National Importance status. Warangal is known for its rich historical and cultural heritage. It is situated at a distance of 140 km from Hyderabad. Warangal is well connected by rail and road. NIT, Warangal campus is about 2 km away from Kazipet railway station and 12 km from Warangal Railway station. Participants are advised to alight either at Kazipet or Warangal depending upon the train of travel. About the Department The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME) offers an Undergraduate program in MME and two Post Graduate programs with Specialization in Industrial Metallurgy and Materials Technology. The Department has experienced faculty and well established laboratories.
