So have you been to a Cottage Meeting yet?

I have been to six with many more to attend over the next several weeks. If you are really curious I can tell you this much, the refreshments are wonderful and the people are well.the people are fabulous! Seriously, I have to give a huge thank you to all our host and hostesses for their time and hospitality. Also, thank you to each of you that are taking your time to attend and meet with me and others. Cottage meetings are a time for me to hear your story--to know who you are, what you do and how God has been and continues to be in your life. Cottage meetings are not a time to tell me what you want at church. Not that I dont care, but there will be other ways for those things to be known. In our beginning months together, I am most interested in hearing your story. Most of us do not acknowledge that we have a story--maybe a life, but a story. It sounds dramatic, maybe a little Hollywood when you say it that way. But you do have a story. Your story is an important story, as it is part of Gods greater story. Your life is lived in Gods story and it is important that we give voice to our story. Giving voice to our story can be the beginning of understanding our story in relation to Gods story and in relation to the community of faith story. We are Gods people with stories to share. Along with hearing stories, I love to hear laughter. Where two or more are gathered there will be laughter!

A group of 11 people traveled 15.5 hours to Gallup New Mexico to do Mission work with Hands and Feet Ministry. We departed on Sunday August 5th at 6 am in the First United Church bus. Team members included: Kelby Johnson, Erica Hadachek, Sarah Kemmerer, Molly Williams, Kale Johnson, Sean Meckley, Gary Hadachek, Alan Richecky, Tom Williams, Mikel Hadachek, and Phil Meckley. The group included members with as many as 4 mission trips under their belt to members going on their first mission. The Mission Team did a 3 day Bible School in the Marino Lake Chapter, did painting that ranged from helping a 103 year old Navajo Lady (Grandma Berth), to a living room and bed room for an elderly lady in the Chapter of Iyanbito, to Answer Gods Call presidents house (Elston), to serving the homeless under a tree in Gallup. During the week long adventure, we had the opportunity to visit nightly with Hands and Feet, Answer Gods Call, and others that were missionaries as we ate with the Otero family and did devotions. Roy (from Hands and Feet) talked each night after dinner in a devotion setting that put us back into our places and reminded us why we were there. Our nights were also busy as we were able to partake in Navajo Dancers, Annual Inter-Tribal celebration, hiking at Red Rock, and shopping in downtown Gallup. The fellowship that the team members had on the trip also had a large impact on each and every one of us. Wow! Our next Everyone Serve Sunday is right around the corner, September 30th! We just got everything put away from the last one and here it is time to get back after it. We don't have projects finalized yet, however, we do have a few ideas floating around like the leaves that might come the 30th. If you know of someone or something in need in the community that our congregation can help with, please let us know. After Worship, the Fellowship Ministry Team has planned a sandwich, salad & dessert dinner for us before we get started on our ES projects. Food, drinks and table service will all be provided by them. Our thanks to Carol Monsanto, Susan Arbuthnot, Gina Aurand, Tandy Rundus, Stephanie Schintler, Lori Scofield, Molly Williams, Sherry Skinner, Stacia Piroutek and Lizz Skocny for what we know will be a yummy meal treat. The fairstand committee would like to thank everyone who volunteered to help make this year a success. From the early morning start up crew to the end of night closers, to the pie bakers and pie cutters, to the soup makers and burger makers, and anyone that helped, we had a great bunch of people helping. A special thank you to those outside our church family that volunteered too. The week started out hot, but ended with a beautiful Saturday. Thank you again to all who helped make this year a great success! The old food stand is gone and construction has begun on the new building. If you haven't already, you should drive by and check it out. The Leadership Team recently met on August 22nd. We opened with a reading about growing vital congregations and with a personal learning session from Pastor Emily about examining your relationship with God on a daily basis. We focused much of our discussion on Trustee needs for repairs and on the vision of the church to accomplish our mission statement. Please see the Trustee report to learn about all the repair needs the church and parsonage currently are facing. We felt like the church needed a vision to go along with the mission statement to help remind members where we are headed. A vision should always be changing, but right now the Leadership Team decided our vision should be: Passionate Worship, Life of Prayer, Bible Study, and Purposeful Mission. If someone asks you what the church is doing, you can now say we are striving for passionate worship or we do purposeful mission. Hopefully, it will give you guidance and direction for the church. If you have any questions, feel free to ask any members of the Leadership Team. Please plan on attending one of the upcoming Cottage meetings and be looking for info on Stewardship in the near future. They do not give from a what remains mentality, but from a what comes rst priority. Giving seriously becomes a personal spiritual discipline, a way of serving God, and a means of helping the church fulll its Godappointed mission. Focused conviction and intention causes them to give in a more pronounced way, without fear and with greater trust.

The Church Trustees Building and Grounds updates for Mid-year 2012... The Trustees have made many changes, repairs and improvements to the Church, Grounds and Parsonage so far this year. At the Parsonage: We have removed four trees; one which was badly damaged by storms & was replaced with a Golden Maple hybrid, paid for by a private donation. The sidewalk at the same location has been replaced utilizing the City of Bellevilles sidewalk program and a local contractor. Early this year, a new refrigerator was purchased for the kitchen and the kitchen window replaced. Several light fixtures have been replaced in the Parsonage with ceiling fans or new light fixtures, two of which were replaced with a private donation. A damaged area in the ceiling has been repaired and painted as well as the interior of the garage repainted. The drapes in the living & dining room have been purchased by a private donation. The Trustees have repaired or replaced many other items needing attention such as the privacy fence, basement bathroom, water softener, closet doors and the front entry door. Current Projects at the Parsonage: New landscaping is now in the works including reseeding and adding new plantings and features around the front of the Parsonage and south lawn. We would like to replace the windows in the north living and dining rooms before winter, as they let in cold air. At the Church: We have had to pay for several repairs this year. One of the two main AC/Furnaces has had to have a motor replaced, the north fire escape flat roof has been replaced. Several electrical issues and light fixtures have been repaired or replaced. The overflow/meeting room walls have been repaired and repainted. Current Repairs needed at the Church: The Food Bank has experienced damp walls in the areas they use downstairs, so much so that they have had to move their shelves and supplies away from the walls to keep the supplies dry. To fix this issue the basement walls need repair and rain drainage needs to be addressed; this is also true with the north storage areas in Fellowship Hall. The chimney of the Church has leaked into the classroom above the overflow. The chimney and the interior walls around the area need repair. Some of the face brick on the outside of the Church need to be reset as to avoid further damage or loss of the bricks themselves. A site inspection to find out why the walls have leaked in has determined that the rain gutters on the Church are not large enough to carry the water from the larger than normal roof. Replacement with commercial building rain gutters which are larger in width will help direct the water away from the building. This would also eliminate the issue with the north Sanctuary wall that has been wet from time to time. The Church Kiosk (Front Lawn Sign) replacement: The Trustees continue to receive donations for the Kiosk Project. In your January 2012 Newsletter a representation of the new Kiosk was shown. To date the Project is still about $4,000 short of being able to finish the project. This will be a brick & motor sign similar in size with the same flaming cross attached and a new digital display board much like the one at Astra Bank. The sign once completed could be used to announce Church events, Service times, Weddings, Mission Youth UMW Projects. The Trustees are anxious to see this done, the old Kiosk has been down for a long time now and the temporary banner replaced once. Your Church Trustees have a long list. They have a modest budget in which they have stretched to the maximum. The buildings are at a point where we need to fix the problems before they get any larger or more expensive. Any donation to the Trustees can be recorded in your reported giving. Your help will be greatly appreciated by the Trustees and will help enable them to care for the Church properties you have entrusted them with. The Church Trustees are: Janet Heyka, Annette Bredthauer, Molly Williams, Sid Scofield, Jerry Melton, Jerry Richecky, Russ Piroutek and Don Westphal. The next time you talk to one of the Trustees, please do thank them for their work and time. All of the Trustees have taken their personal time, equipment and talents to help with the repairs and projects mentioned above. I would like to express my appreciation to each Trustee for their help when asked to take on a task. I would also like to say thank you to the UMW Ladies and Alan Engle who helped prepare the Parsonage for Pastor Emilys family, and last but not least, thank you Rich Schintler and Jerry Melton for the use of your equipment and generous time at the Parsonage. Fall Youth Sunday School Kick-off GROW PROCLAIM SERVE is the new Youth Sunday School theme. Youth Sunday schools classes begin Sunday September 9, 2012 with Promotion Sunday. Youth ages pre-K through 6th grade are invited to come Sunday morning to Fellowship Hall at 9:30 am for a FROGGY good time. We will have a cereal breakfast and some fun with a frog theme to kick-off our year. After breakfast youth will be dismissed to their new Sunday School classrooms to meet their teachers. Fall Youth Sunday School will continue each Sunday 10:00 am-10:40 am. Classrooms/teachers are listed below. Youth are encouraged to stay for worship Sept 9th as all youth and Sunday School teachers will be recognized with a special gift and be officially promoted to the next Sunday School grade. GROW IN YOUR FAITH THIS FALL Our Mission statement says at First United Methodist Church Belleville we Prayerfully Seek God, Grow in Faith, Love and Serve Others for the Transformation of Lives. Pastor Emily will lead a Timeline Discussion on the history of our church...who we are...where weve been...and where were going! Well share memories and also brainstorm on ideas we want to re-invent or new ones to invent. Come enjoy this time together.

Dont miss this Sandwich-Salad-Dessert lunch after Worship on Sunday, Sept. 30th. This is our Everyone Serve Sunday so we hope to have a lot of volunteers in action. Come enjoy lunch together before we go out to serve. The Fellowship Ministry Team is making it really easy for us by providing the food, drinks and table service...just be there!

The more often children eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs. Get together around the table!
