SWEATING GUARDED HOTPLATE m259b

Instrument for Determination of Physiological Properties

Measurement of Thermal Properties And Water Vapour Resistance under steady state conditions

STANDARDS The SDL Atlas Sweating Guarded Hotplate (m259b) meets the requirements of EN 31092:1993 being the endorsement of ISO 11092:1993 APPLICATION The Sweating Guarded Hotplate simulates the heat and mass transfer processes which occur next to human skin. Measurement of thermal resistance and water vapour resistance under steady state conditions of a range of products including fabrics, films, coatings, foams and leather including multi-layer assemblies. USERS Manufacturers of clothing, quilts, sleeping bags, upholstery And similar textile and textile-like products:PRINCIPLES The specimen to be tested is placed on an electronically heated porous plate with conditioned air ducted to flow across and parallel to its upper surface. Thermal Resistance Rct The Thermal Resistance of the specimen is determined by subtracting the thermal resistance of the boundary air layer above the surface of the test apparatus ( bare plate reading ) from that of a test specimen plus boundary air layer. Water Vapour Resistance Ret The heated porous plate is covered by a water-vapour permeable but liquid-water impermeable membrane. Water fed to the heated porous plate evaporates and passes through the membrane as vapour. The Water Vapour Resistance of the test specimen is determined by subtracting the Ret of the boundary air layer above the surface of the membrane from that of the test specimen plus the boundary air layer. ( The heat flux required to maintain a constant temperature of the porous plate is a measure of the rate of water evaporation from which water-vapour resistance can be determined ) Commercial test houses Military applications Research institutes Sports, leisure and comfort clothing

INSTRUMENT FEATURES

o porous metal plate fixed to an electrically heated metal block surrounded by a thermal guard housed in an integral conditioned cabinet o both heated block and thermal guards are closely controlled for temperature.

Conditions
200.00

The following parameters are monitored and controlled within the conditioned cabinet :- air temperature - air speed - relative humidity - heater power consumption

Test samples up to 70mm thick can be accommodated by provision of a mechanism for adjusting the height of the porous plate and thermal guards relative to the measuring table

Automatic Operation

- the system is controlled from a pc and runs automatically largely without operator intervention - data collection is via an Excel program which completes all necessary calculations.
