Mr. Frank Vanderlip purchased the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1913, and in 1916 constructed the first residential home on the Peninsula in the Portuguese Bend area of Mr. Vanderlip developed a hobby of maintaining a large bird aviaryjust below The Cottage, which included a number of large bird coops and a large semi-circular pond providing a haven for migratory birds. Mr. Vanderlip also had a full time bird doctor living next door and a bird hospital built next to the pond. The origin of the peacocks that inhabit the Palos Verdes Peninsula is somewhat disputed. Frank Vanderlip Jr., in an interview,stated that the peacocks were a gift from Lucky Baldwin, a prominent investor and businessman and a friend of Frank Vanderlip Sr. around 1924. In this version, Mr. Vanderlip was visiting with Mr. Baldwin at Mr. Baldwins estate in Arcadia, and admired his flock of peacocks that had originally been imported by Mr. Baldwin from India in 1879. Mr. Vanderlip then commented thathis Villa Narcissa was too quiet, and that Mr. Baldwin thengave Mr. Vanderlip 6 peacocks to liven the place up. Elin Vanderlip in her book published shortly before her death, also states that the peacocks were a gift from lucky Baldwin, this, however, would not have been possible as Mr. Baldwin died in 1909, prior to Mr. Vanderlips purchase of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Another version has Anita, the daughter of Mr. Baldwin, giving the peacocks to Mr. Vanderlip years after Mr. Vanderlip had admired Mr. Baldwins peacocks atMr. Baldwinsestate prior to Mr. Baldwins death. Yet another version, published by Francine A. Bradley, Ph.D. UC Davis, in areport to the City of Rancho Palos Verdes on managing peafowl on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, states that the original peacock colony on the Palos Verdes Peninsula was a gift of 16 birds from the daughter of William Wrigley, Jr. to Frank Vanderlip, Sr. from Mr. Wrigleys aviary on Catalina Island. This version was supported by an interview with Mrs. John Vanderlip (Suzanne Vanderlip) in 2000. One thing that does not seem to be disputed is that in later years, Mr. Vanderlips collection of birds (other than the peacocks) were donated back to Mr. Wrigleys aviary on Catalina Island. The peacocks which had been maintained at the Vanderlip Estate in Portuguese Bend were apparently released in Portuguese Bend after Mr. Vanderlips death. It is suspected that some of the birds were introduced to Palos Verdes Estates by former mayor Fred Roessler sometime in the period from 1960-65. There are now numerous peacock colonies in Rancho Palos Verdes in the Crestridge, Vista Grande, and the Portuguese Bend areas, as well as in the Lunada Bay and Malaga Cove areas of Palos Verdes Estates.

Sometimes the best ideas come in the most unexpected places at the most unexpected times. Just ask Kirsten Oxboel and Jim Lobley, the co-founders and designers of Oborain. Stopping at a pizza joint as they traveled through Costa Rica in December 2011, Lobley handed Oxboel an idea hed sketched out on a napkin. On it was a picture of an outdoor shower that could be set up on any level surface during spring and summer, then disassembled and stored inside for winter. After that initial idea, we took the next few months to experiment and nail down the idea, figuring out what materials we wanted to use, Oxboel said. One of our goals from the beginning has been to simplify and pare down, so it is easy for customers to understand and install without any tools. That was really important to us. Gradually making a name for themselves in the design world since showcasing their pre-fabricated showers at Dwell on Design in June, Oxboel and Lobley have seen their shop in Greenfield, Massachusetts, where everything is built and manufactured, busier then ever. Trying to celebrate the aliveness of showering outdoors, Oborain weaves the elements of steel, wood, water and air to create the ultimate outdoor showering

experience that can be anywhere from the backyard to the beach. And while the company could have outsourced the assembly of their product, Oxboel and Lobley made it a priority to have everything handcrafted locally with the best materials. The shower deck is made from Cumaru, a sustainability harvested Brazilian hardwood that is durable, rich in color and weather resistant. The frames, along with all of the hardware, is crafted from stainless steel tubing that has a 400 grit finish, giving the steel a soft, reflective luster. The Axor Citterio showerpipe, which has integrated German engineering and Italian design, also offers temperature control and a three-jet showerhead with spray modes. The materials we use are a huge part of what we do, Oxboel said. We wanted the shower to be as perfect as possible and to really have a quality of design and materials. Offering a solo, double and trio shower, along with a new piccolo addition, Oborain prices range from $4,300-$12,000, depending on the size and amenities purchased. Oborain also offers accessories to go along with the showers, including: benches, towel hooks and soap shelves. I really have seen nothing like it, Oxboel said. The prefabricated showers we make are really one-of-a-kind.

METLOX

Its hard to imagine a downtown that was at one time less resplendent with designer stores and high-priced eateries, and was home to a popular pottery manufacturer. Yet, the intersection of Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Valley was once the home of Metlox Pottery, a company first known for making advertising signs and, later, colorful dinnerware and ceramic wear that became synonymous with Manhattan Beach.

I love that Metlox is such a huge part of the history of the town in which I live, and that I have a little piece of that history in my home.

METLOX FUN FACTS:


The name Metlox is a combination of metal and oxide, a reference to the glaze pigment. T.C. Prouty, the founder of Metlox Pottery was born in 1888 in Michigan. At the age of 18, he invented and patented a tachometer used on aircraft during WWI. Metlox manufactured a neon sign constructed Pantages Theatre in 1928. for the newly-

METLOX HISTORY
Metlox Manufacturing Company was previously located at 1200 Morningside Drive. It was founded in 1927 by T. C. Prouty with the aim of producing outdoor ceramic signs, but the company name was soon changed to Metlox Pottery with the focus on making different lines of dinnerware and ceramic collectibles. Metloxs first line of pottery, Poppytrail, was introduced in 1934, and was available in 15 bright colors and pastels. The poppy, being our state flower, was used in the title in order to emphasize California, and Poppytrail quickly became well known for its vivid glazes which came from locally-mined metallic oxides. During WWII, business suffered and production was limited. Reportedly, Metlox converted most of its production to defense work and produced aircraft parts. After the war, Evan K. Shaw of American Pottery in Los Angeles purchased Metlox and in 1946, the famous California Ivy pattern was created the first of many handpainted patterns. Shaw focused on increasing the dinnerware lines and started expanding into art ware. Barbara Wesser, former 20-year South Bay resident, recalls her parents being given the entire Metlox Ivy collection by the Shaw family. She remembers growing up with the Shaw children and spending time at their family homes, one of which was in Hermosa Beach. They lived in the Hancock Park section of Los Angeles, in a beautiful, Tudor-style home, says Barbara. They also owned a house in Hermosa as a vacation home I think it was on the Strand. The Shaw family eventually moved to Palos Verdes. Later, when Barbaras parents built a home in Arcadia, they received a set of the famous Rooster dishes from the Shaws.

I have approximately 80-90 pieces consisting of salad/dessert plates, large and small bowls, dinner plates, buffet plates, a duck cookie jar, and gravy boats, says Robin, who first started collecting Metlox after finding six dessert plates years ago at a garage sale for $1.00. I love the fact that Metlox is such a huge part of the history of the town in which I live, and that I have a little piece of that history in my home.

THE MARK OF METLOX


On older Metlox pieces, the Metlox mark was incised into the pottery as opposed to being stamped on. For serious collectors, this incised mark is the most desirable. Some authentic pieces may have stamped-on marks which are smeared, and others may be stamped more cleanly. And while some unmarked pieces can also be found, these are not considered as valuable as those with the older, clearlydefined impression.

METLOX CLOSES SHOP


After the death of Evan Shaw in 1980, Kenneth Avery became president of Metlox. However, in 1989, Metlox closed its doors and the property sat dormant for some time. The 97,000-square-foot former site is now known as Metlox, a town square that is occupied by various retail stores. Metlox pottery and collectibles can now be found through a variety of sources. The vintage pottery recalls an earlier, simpler California, and certainly a different type of bustling downtown Manhattan Beach.

Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and the western parts of Redondo Beach have continually grown in popularity as a place to vacation for a week or two and sometimes even for a month or two. What is interesting is that 10 and 20 years ago it was not a popular destination for vacations; it was small hometown area where locals lived and played. For long time locals, you can imagine their opinion of the town transforming to a destination zone as opposed to our place. Why has it become so popular so fast? One of the biggest changes of course has been the entire face of the downtown area which has converted from basic t-shirt stores, surf shops, and cheap burger/pizza joints to high-end boutique retail stores and fine restaurants. You can still find the best burger in town at Ercoles or Simmzys, but the array of restaurants and the quality has dramatically improved over the years. So, where do people stay when they come to the beach? There certainly arent any 20-story luxury hotels at our beaches. You have Shade Hotel, a luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Manhattan Beach, but it can fill up on a moments notice. Some local property owners have gotten savvy to this dilemma and have turned their personal homes into glorified hotels. They pack up their personal belongings, leave it fully furnished down to the dishes and they rent it out by the week to visitors. The potential rent can be anywhere from $1,000 a week to $10,000 a week for a luxury beach front home. The summer months are by far the most popular, as would be expected. If you own a beach-close home you can almost be guaranteed it will be rented from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Couples, families, students, and singles will book the homes all summer long in order to experience the life the locals get to enjoy 365 days a year. The most expensive and most popular rentals are those that are walking distance to the beach and walking distance to the restaurants and shops. Of course, the size of the home and its condition have a major effect on the overall price. Where do all of these people come from? The vast array of visitors come from all over the country, if not the globe. The most common we see are from New York, Arizona, Northern California, many Mid west States and some even come from as close as Los Angeles. The latest local trend is where the more fortunate get to purchase the vacation home of their dreams and use it a few weeks a year. For those that are comfortable renting it out to strangers, they let vacation rental agents rent them out when they are not using them, which often pays most of their carrying costs for maintenance taxes and mortgages, if any. An even more interesting trend is there have been multiple Local Homeowners right here from Manhattan Beach that have bought properties on The Strand in Hermosa Beach and/or Manhattan Beach. Talk about an easy commute, I used to brag about a home I used to own in Park City, Utah that was our family vacation home. The commute was a short 2 hour flight to Salt Lake City and 30 minute freeway drive. I could leave on Friday after work on Southwest Airlines and catch the 7AM flight back on Monday morning and literally be in my office by 8:30 AM. Well, that short commute brag was just beaten down. I just got back from a clients home on The Strand: he met me there on his skateboard. He commuted from Manhattan Beach to Hermosa Beach in board shorts and baseball cap. If you didnt know him you would have thought he works at the local grocery store as a bag boy. (Not that a bag boy is a bad thing, it was my first job and I loved it). It continues to surprise me how comfortably casual our beach community is and that, too, is part of the allure. So what happens when all of the summertime vacationers leave town? The vacation rental prices drop dramatically and owners clamor to get more permanent residents to take up the rest of the year. With the LA Lakers, LA Kings and LA Clippers practicing a stones throw away in El Segundo, my team often places them in some of the beautifully furnished rentals for the season. (Their season, coincidentally, runs just after Labor Day and ends right when summer begins.) They become a perfect fill until the summer visitors return. If you are a vacationer and trying to find properties like these to rent, talk with your local realtors. There are also many websites that promote vacation rentals and they are loaded with pictures, prices and options. If you are an owner and think you want to rent your home out, check with the local laws regarding rental restrictions, taxes, and other ordinances that may apply. For the right property owner, it can be very profitable, yet for others it could end up being very costly. In either case do your research and find all you can about the pros and cons of staying at, as well as owning, a vacation rental.

This week prices bumped up a bit but the trend of recent weeks is generally downward. Should the sales trend continue, expect prices to level off soon and potentially to resume their climb from there. Watch prices as the market transitions from a Buyers market to a Sellers market. This week . . . The median single family home list price in South Redondo Beach this week is $1,087,500. A total of 25 single family homes have been on the market for an average of 93 days with an average price per square foot of $514. If youre curious as to where chef Robert Bell got the inspiration for the name and menu at Mama Terano restaurant in Rolling Hills Estates, look no further then its walls. There youll see a picture of his grandparents, more importantly his grandmother Millie Terano, easily the person whos had the biggest impact on Bells culinary career. Growing up in my grandmothers kitchen in Brooklyn, I learned from the beginning that it was all about food, Bell said. Having good ingredients is important and I still believe that today. Opening its doors in October 2010 at 815 Deep Valley Drive, Mama Teranos has become a hot spot on the hill for Italian cuisine because of its authentic menu and casual atmosphere. While about 50 percent of the menu is built around dishes that Millie Terano made in that Brooklyn kitchen, the other half were created by Bell and partner Steve Riley, who believe in the idea that only a few ingredients are necessary to create flavorful dishes. With a wide variety of choices on the menu, Mama Terano has still left room for many Italian classics like linguine carbonara ($13), eggplant parmesan ($12) and spumoni ($10). However, the restaurant has also created many one-of-a-kind dishes, including: fennel and orange salad with arugula, avocado and pistachio ($10), balsamic glazed pork spare ribs with smashed potatoes and peas ($15) and pan With its weekly blackboard specials always a big hit with customers, Mama Terano also offers a large wine list, full of choices from across Italy. Some of the highlights include: Vignavecchia Chianti Classico from Chianti, Montezovo Valpolicella Ripasso from Verona and Villa Matilde Greco Di Tufo from Campania. Open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, the restaurant also offers a Sunday supper that is $20 per person and includes an antipasti, pasta, salad, two courses of fish or meat and dessert. If it wasnt for my grandmother, Im not sure I would have been so interested in food, Bell said. She changed my life.
