ENC 1101 Project I (Memoir and Writing)

PI: Writing Processes and Practices Write an essay that identifies and analyzes your best and worst habits, and discusses opportunities for potential growth. A memoir is a personal essay that recreates a past event, person, and/or place and connects that memory to the present, self-aware writer. The reader is able to both comprehend the significance of the memory and understand the writers experience. Memoirs often place this intimate experience in a larger historical or cultural context. The writer can either be the observer of events or an active participant. Memoirs are very much like scrapbooks that immortalize rich, insightful moments. Students should be able to: Identify a specific audience Write in a personal voice Select and order events into a narrative Construct and convey the meaning of a clearly significant moment

ASSIGNMENT: Write an essay in a personal voice that recreates a particular experience. Incorporate narrative techniques and sensory detail as well as dialogue, characterization, thought passages, and flashbacks.

Objectives: Task: Here are some of the questions you must consider in order to write this essay: First, how do you see yourself as a writer? Is that self-perception helping you be the best writer you can be? What are your writing habits, your revision habits, your reading habits? How can you change? How have you attempted to change (this semester, particularly)? What have been the breakthrough essays that you have written, and which have been absolute failures? Why? Think about what you have learned throughout this unit, also. What similarities do you share with the authors and subjects of the readings? Discuss, in particular, the rules you have learned throughout your life, including those with which you agree and those with which you disagree. Perhaps discuss your own literacy narrative, identifying the texts (not just the books, not just the major literature, but all texts) that have impacted the way you write and the things you want to say. This essay is an exercise in honesty. Im not looking for you to try to impress me. It should be a personal essay, built upon your reflections and experiences, specific to you, not built upon the generalized fluff of what you think I want to hear. Your analysis of your writing life should be both specific and honest, and To understand writing as a practice To sharpen your own writing and revision habits To critically think and draw conclusions To increase your skills set for reading and writing rhetorically To give yourself a blueprint for future success.
