The overgrown lot was cleared out to make way for a foundation, studding and finally the four walls that will make the Lyons feel at
home. Habitat for Humanity Burlington County Construction Manager Allen McSparron said the expected completion date for the
build is by the end of December. While putting the walls up, McSparron directed Kayla to stand in the doorframes for the front and
back walls. She was unsure if the walls would make it over without touching her, but when the walls were raised above her head she
smiled and was ready to finish the job.

Moorestown Council members
met on Wednesday, Sept. 5 to dis-
cuss possible alternatives after a
judge ruled the township is not al-
lowed to confine alcohol within
the Moorestown Mall. Discussion
of the matter was to continue at a
meeting on Sept. 10.
Township solicitor Thomas
Coleman presented details re-
garding Superior Court Judge
Ronald Bookbinders decision to
reject the townships ordinance to
restrict liquor licensing to the
mall and concluded the second
referendum on the ballot was un-
sound.

binder never challenge the first
referendum on the ballot since it

The building blocks were laid
in April of 2011. They formed a
committee, held meetings and
even gathered volunteers to par-
ticipate, but they needed to take it
further.
It Takes a Village New Jersey
(ITAVNJ) is slowly expanding its
helping capacity after receiving
insurance allowing volunteers to
drive its clients to doctors visits,
physical therapy and even the
local library.
Moorestown residents Irv and
Trudi Herman started ITAVNJ as
volunteer run, non-profit organi-
zation to aid residents of the
Burlington County area. Mem-
bers of the ITAV help the elderly
and disabled and are now looking
into aiding veterans who are com-
ing home.
Trudi Herman, recording sec-
retary for ITAV, mentioned that
the organization is willing to aid
anyone who needs it, but they
must be evaluated before they can
officially become a client.
The organization can reach
clients in Moorestown, Mount
Laurel, Cinnaminson, Delran and
Maple Shade.
Volunteers are trained during
orientation sessions to help vari-
ous kinds of clients. According to
Herman, each volunteer must
complete one session before they
can physically assist clients.
While most people take everyday
chores, such as laundry, grocery
shopping and taking out the
trash, for granted, the ITAV vol-
unteers are there assisting the
elderly and disabled who are un-
able to perform certain tasks.
According to ITAVs website,
volunteers will perform tasks
such as shop for groceries, run er-
rands, visit and provide compan-
ionship, offer a brief break for
family care-givers and call mem-
bers to chat.
They have to ask for help,
Herman said.

he news from July wasnt great
for Atlantic City: another big
loss in casino win money from
the same month last year.
But, all is not lost, and August prom-
ised to be a bit better because we avoid-
ed a tropical storm, unlike last year.
The state reported that casino rev-
enue was down 9.5 percent from July
2011. That includes a lost weekend
(2011 had five weekends).
But comparing year-over-year data
might not be all that relevant to At-
lantic Citys future. Big wins or loss-
es on the part of high-rolling gam-
blers can make a difference. And the
citys fate really doesnt lie in the
hands of a hot weekend here and
there.
Atlantic Citys future depends on be-
coming a vacation destination for peo-
ple who not only like to gamble, but
also enjoy fine dining, entertainment,
nightlife and more.
The days of relying on busloads of
gamblers from surrounding states to
pay the bills are over. Those buses now
stop at casinos that are located much
closer to the gambers homes. Atlantic
City casinos have registered losses
ever since Pennsylvania opened its
casinos almost six years ago. Pennsyl-
vania gamblers, quite naturally, are
staying closer to home. At least those
who just want to spend a few hours in
front of a slot machine.
Atlantic Citys future is more closely
tied to new ventures, such as the Revel,
which is touting itself as something
much more than just a gambling hall.
That casino is seeing revenue growth.
Maybe not as much or as quickly as all
would like, but, nonetheless, it is grow-
ing.
Atlantic City has to reinvent itself
and thats not an impossible task. It
has to become the East Coast version
off Las Vegas something so grand, so
spectacular that people bypass their
local gambling establishment to expe-
rience something special.
Its on its way. But it wont get there
overnight.

Sure the July casino revenue numbers
were down. But a new marketing cam-
paign and other efforts seem to indi-
cate that Atlantic City finally realizes it
has to be something other than a col-
lection of gambling halls.
When the Riversharks contacted Town-
ship Clerk Patricia Hunt to invite
Moorestown to participate in Moorestown
Night, she just couldnt say no. This is an
opportunity to bring the entire community
together for some good old-fashioned fun
baseball!
Hunt indicated that once Mayor John
Button and Township Manager Scott
Carew put their stamp of approval on the
night, after learning there was no cost to
the township, she called Superintendent
Brian Betze to make sure Back to School
Night wasnt scheduled on Sept. 20.
After receiving approval and clearing
every parents schedule from Back to
School Night, she organized the
Moorestown Night Committee, which is
comprised of six ladies who work in Town
Hall (Hunt, Karen Maltbie, Rhunette
Lovelace, Dorothy Samartino, Tracey
Ballinghoff and Cindi Mitman). In addi-
tion, Moorestown Education Association
(MEA) President Lisa Tripani picked up
the torch and will be promoting the event
throughout the schools.
These ladies went to work organizing
the event and feel they a have night of fun
for all ages lined up. Upon entering the
ballpark, attendees will be proudly greeted
by Moorestown Fire, EMS and Police staff
and vehicles. All will be available to talk
with and receive important information
from. Once in the park, the games will
begin. At approximately 6:20 p.m., pre-
game activities will be happening on the
field. The Moorestown Theater Company
will be performing musical numbers pro-
moting their upcoming fall productions
42nd Street and Annie Warbucks. The
Moorestown Schools will have on-field per-
formances by its cheerleaders, dance squad
and band. A dunk tank, face painting and a
balloon artist are also planned for the
evening. The Moorestown ministerium is
also participating in the night. The game
will be opened with the National An-
them performed by soloist, Sister Carol
Jones from the Second Baptist Church of
Moorestown. Hold onto your seats as But-
ton throws out the first pitch of the
evening. In between innings, the fans will
be entertained by other local entertain-
ment such as a tug-of-war competition by
local leaders in the community and
schools. Also during pre-game activities
and in between innings, attendees are en-
couraged to visit the vendors tables, which
will be manned, by local businesses and or-
ganizations.
One of the greatest highlights of the
evening, according to Samartino,
Moorestown tax collector and breast can-
cer survivor, is that she is being honored
and funds are being raised to help her in
her first-time participation in the Susan G.
Komen 3-Day Walk in the fall.

was seen as a legal action taken
by the township to approve liquor
sales in Moorestown.
Judge Bookbinder was clear
in his decision that question
number one was legal and bind-
ing . . . There was never any ques-
tion or the intent to challenge
question number one, Coleman
said.
Moorestown resident Roger
Voyell was concerned the coun-
cils discussion regarding the liti-
gation would not reach the public.
He requested the council to recon-
sider going into closed session
and to discuss only the neces-
sary questions behind closed
doors.
I am sure all of the residents
would like to know what the im-
plications are for the township.
Does that mean we are a wet town
with no liquor licenses? Does it
mean that we have to go back to a
referendum?, Voyell said.
Coleman explained to Voyell
his intended action for the meet-
ing was to discuss the ongoing lit-
igation; the implication of the liti-
gation, and action the council
could possibly take.
Mayor John Button anticipated
the council would not take any
form of action until all facts are
discussed among the council.
Council members spent approxi-
mately one hour in the confer-
ence room discussing possible so-
lutions and a next step for the
town.
Coleman was to work with
township manager Scott Carew to
come up with a solution to pres-
ent to the council and public dur-
ing the meeting on Monday.
Coleman mentioned that
PREIT is possibly preparing a
motion to reconsider Book-
binders decision.
We want to resolve this ques-
tion in the fairest possible way,
Button said.

Herman said the organization
is looking for a younger crowd. So
far, ITAV has volunteers ranging
from 40 to 70 years old.
Herman and her husband, Irv,
continue to go to the Laurel Acres
Park in Mount Laurel to try and
find a younger crowd who can
perform task such as grocery
shopping and carry heavy loads.
Herman said by getting younger
people involved it will keep the or-
ganization going.
You have to get younger peo-
ple and people that are enthused,
Herman said.

division of the National Ameri-
can Miss Pageant held in East

$1,000, airfare to California and
two passes to Disneyland. She
was also asked to make local ap-
pearances to share her good
news. The National American Miss
pageants are for Today's Girl and
Tomorrow's Leaders. The pag-
eant program is based on inner
beauty, as well as poise, presenta-
tion, and offers an All American
Spirit of fun for family and
friends. Emphasis is placed on
the importance of gaining self-

Burlington County has been help-
ing county residents in times of
emotional distress. The organiza-
tion recently extended its mission
of suicide prevention to veterans.
In partnership with the National
Suicide Prevention Helpline,
CONTACT will provide veteran
referral assistance through the
National Suicide Prevention Life-
line (NSPL) 1-800-273-TALK.
Approximately 36,909 suicide
deaths were reported in the US in
2009, the latest data available. The
rate of suicide has been increas-
ing since 2000. This is the highest
rate of suicide in 15 years. As of
2008, the suicide rate in the mili-
tary has surpassed that of the
civilian population, and it has
steadily increased since that
time.
With National Suicide Preven-
tion Week approaching, we are
proud to increase awareness and
assist more people who are in dis-
tress, especially our veterans,
who reach out and call for help,
said Theresa Tobey, Executive Di-
rector of CONTACT.

Suicide occurs across eth-
nic, economic, social and age
boundaries.
Suicide is the 10th leading
cause of death.
There is a relationship be-
tween depression and suicide; the
risk of suicide is increased by
more than 50 percent in de-
pressed individuals.
The vast majority of indi-
viduals who are suicidal often
display cues and warning signs.
Being aware of the signs of
someone who may be depressed
and knowing who to contact for
help are two important ways to
help prevent tragedies.

The Burlington County Health
Department will kick off its sea-
sonal flu campaign beginning
with two immunization clinics on
Monday, Sept. 17, and residents
will have the added convenience
of being able to schedule appoint-
ments online, Freeholder Mary
Ann OBrien announced recently.
These first two clinics will be
held from 1 to 4 p.m. at both
Burlington Center and
Moorestown Malls. There will be
no charge for those with Medicare
Part B as their primary insur-
ance. A donation of $15 for season-
al flu vaccine is recommended by
those not covered by Medicare, if
residents can afford it.
The Health Department advis-
es residents they can schedule
their flu shots by visiting the de-
partments website at
www.co.burlington.nj.us/health.
Residents who have scheduled
their appointment online, and
who bring the printed and com-
pleted consent form can be fast-
tracked through the clinic. Walk-
ins are still welcome and encour-
aged; however, the process may
take longer.
The clinics are scheduled at
various locations throughout the
County over the next two
months, OBrien said. I hope
and believe that we have done
everything humanly possible to
make this convenient for all resi-
dents.
Both the traditional seasonal
flu vaccine and pneumonia vac-
cine will be offered at all of the
other clinics. Again, Medicare
Part B can be accepted to cover
the cost for seasonal flu and pneu-
monia vaccines. A donation of
$15 for seasonal flu vaccine and
$25 for pneumo is recommended
by those not covered by Medicare
if residents can afford it.
Those who have Medicare cov-
erage and belong to a managed
care plan or HMO, should go to
their regular health care
providers to receive immuniza-
tions.

The Moorestown Night Commit-
tee used the money to have t-

Night. All proceeds from the sale
of the t-shirts will go toward
Samartinos walk and SGK.
It is the committees dream to
see a sea of pink in the stadium
on Sept. 20.
It has been a blessing for me
to see Dorothy take this journey
as we know the power of prayer
through God has been our source
of strength. To see the outpour-
ing of participation and support
by the residents in the stands will
be so powerful and heartwarming
to Dorothy, Lovelace said, who
works closely with Samartino in
the tax office. So we are really
hopeful that the story gets out
and everyone in town plans on
going to the game. Pink logo t-
shirts ($8) and hats ($15) can be
purchased in Town Hall and at
the library during normal
hours.
The Moorestown Night Com-
mittee wants to also give back to
the community through this
event. So, it is donating fifty tick-
ets (paid for through private spon-
sors) to families that may not be
able to afford a family night out at
this time. In addition, it will also
be providing transportation to
the stadium for those who do not
have transportation. Two buses
will be loading at 5 p.m. at the
Moorestown Library. The cost to
ride the bus, which has been
sponsored by a private donor, is $2
per person. Everyone taking the
bus must sign up now and pay $2.
There is room for 100 people on a
first-come, first-served basis. You
can sign up for the bus at the
Moorestown Library or at Town
Hall. The bus will begin loading
at 5 p.m. and will be leaving
promptly at 5:15 p.m. Mitman of
the Moorestown Night Commit-
tee hopes that kids (that do not
need a chaperone), senior citizens
or anyone who wants to hop the
bus will take advantage of this
transportation.

Moorestown Day. Now theres a

Night on Thursday, Sept. 20, and
