The St. Pius School Community strives to follow Jesus As we Study, Pray, and Serve.
Week in Review The children enjoyed their first Spanish and computer class this week. Mrs. Wiggins class also had their first art class. We were very happy to see Ms. Doepker is back! We will be continuing comparing numbers least to greatest. We will also be beginning to use addition signs and vertical addition. To help with this, please have your first grader practice writing and saying the numbers to 30. Ask questions about the numbers, what number comes before a given number and what number comes after. Next week in Science/Social Studies
Social Studies-We will be finishing Unit 1, Time for School, by identifying a problem the school has and working as a class to come up with a solution. Our test will be Thursday, September 13. Science-This week we learned all about the parts of a plant and how plants grow. The children enjoyed a review of our learning from Ms. Frizzle and her magic school bus, along with some songs and skits. We will finish up this chapter with our first practice test on Tuesday, September 11.

Next week in Religion We will begin Chapter 2, We Gather to Celebrate the Mass. The children will take a tour of the church and learn about the holy objects we see. The test for chapter two will be Friday, September 14th. The children may take their Religion books home any day they choose to review the daily lessons. I will also send the books home on Thursday to study for Fridays test.

Next week in Reading/Phonics We will continue reviewing the consonant sounds. The children will be making one syllable words that end with consonant teams. Consonant teams (sh, ch, th, wh, qu, ng, ph, kn, wr) are two letters which team together to signal one sound. Please read with your child every night a book comes home. Repeated Readings is one component of our program. This helps build fluency and confidence. Thank you for helping with this!

Next week in Spelling We will begin our formal spelling program. The words for Friday, September 14th are: let, men, cut, it, in, at, had, on, top, up, *the, *by (* indicates tricky words). I will send home a letter on Monday, Sept 10th explaining what the children will be doing each week in spelling. It will also include a list of activities the children will choose from each night for spelling homework. Next week in Handwriting Correct letter formation is being practiced. We are focusing on making our letters top to bottom and filling the correct line spaces. Please encourage using a capital letter for only the first letter of your childs name.

Next week in English

As part of our English/writing the children write in a daily journal. I give them a sentence starter and they finish it with their own ideas. As the year progresses, they will write more for each topic. To help with the childrens writing, we are learning about 3 types of sentences; the statement, question and explanatory.
