1. Revenue: Which organization had the greatest total player earnings?

Use $19,000,000 as a
midpoint for $10,000,001+. Show your work and explain your reasoning.
2. Mean Earnings: (A) Calculate the mean earnings for a player in each organization. Use
$19,000,000 as a midpoint for $10,000,001+. (B) Which organization had the greatest earnings
per player? Show your work and explain your reasoning.
In order to calculate the greatest total player earnings, we need to first multiply the midpoint of
each salary class (x) by the number of players in that class (f). We then need to add up all of
these products (x * fs) for each organization. Finally, we would compare the sums for each
organization (the values in bolded red) to determine which sport has the highest total revenue.
When we compare these numbers we see that the NFL has the highest total player earnings -$4,225,000,634.50 -- due to the fact that it has a lot more players than the other organizations.
To calculate the mean earnings for a player in each organization, we simply divide the total
player earnings for that sport by the total number of players in that organization. These values
are shown in bolded blue below. The NBA clearly has the greatest earnings per player at
$5,295,896.73, which is over 2 million more than the second highest paying sport.

3. Standard Deviation: Estimate the standard deviation for the earnings of a player in each
organization. Use $19,000,000 as the midpoint for $10,000,001+. Show your work.

4. Which organization has the greatest standard deviation? Show your work and explain your
reasoning.
The NBA has the highest standard deviation at $5,684,087.40.
5. Bell-Shaped Distribution: Of the 7 organizations, which is most bell-shaped? Show your work
and explain your reasoning.
As you can see from the histograms below (created by a student who did a great job):
*the MLB, MLS, and NFL are positively skewed, i.e. their tails extend to the right.
*the NBA and NHL look the most bell-shaped although not perfect.
*NASCAR is a bimodal distribution.
