Strickland on the Side of the Financial Industry Republican State Senator and congressional candidate Tony Strickland (CA-26)

has received over a million dollars from the financial industry over the course of his political career and consistently voted in their interest over the best interests of Californians. In July, Strickland had an opportunity to vote on the Homeowners Bill of Rights, which established consumer protections to help keep foreclosure victims in their homes. In the seven days leading up to the vote, Strickland took $26,750 in campaign contributions from the financial industry, which staunchly opposed the bill. Strickland received nearly $56,000 from the financial industry in the second quarter alone. Strickland Sided with Banking Industry and Voted Against Homeowners Bill Of Rights In 2012, Strickland voted against the Homeowners Bill of Rights, which was hailed as the nation's most comprehensive push to strengthen homeowner rights since the housing meltdown. The bill Strickland opposed provides safeguards for consumers and prevents banks from deceptively foreclosing on a home while at the same time negotiating loan modifications with homeowners. [Sacramento Bee, 7/3/12; Blog, San Francisco Chronicle, 7/6/12; Senate Floor Analyses, 7/2/12; Senate Floor, 7/2/12] The homeowner-rights mortgage legislation, which was signed by Governor Brown, gave people the option to take legal action against misdeeds by the banks that go unresolved, would help keep Californians with sufficient means in their homes. [Sacramento Bee, 7/3/12; Editorial, Sacramento Bee, 7/3/12] Homeowner Bill of Rights Legislation Staunchly Opposed by Banks In passing the Homeowners Bill of Rights, the California Legislature was acting despite opposition from the banking and finance industry. The California Bankers Association, the California Chamber of Commerce and the California Financial Services Association all lobbied against the bill.
