Andrew Nguyen History of Motion Pictures Hebert 1. Jaws, 1975, Steven Spielberg 2.

. The first thing I noticed in this film was the use of the dolly zoom in the beginning when Brody witnesses the shark attack. A dolly zoom is a camera technique in which the camera is dollies towards or away from the subject while the camera zooms in the opposite direction to maintain focus on the subject while distorting the background. This shot displays Brodys subjective reality, which is almost dizzying and disorienting for him. I also noticed many POV shots from the sharks point of view. A POV shot is a point of view shot. It is exactly what the character, or in this case, the shark, would see from his or her perspective. It created a sort of suspense because the audience would be asking themselves, Whos next? It was used throughout the whole movie to foreshadow shark attacks. The use of non-diegetic music was also prominent in this film. Non-diegetic music is the use of music that the audience hears but the characters in the film do not. It helps to set the mood of the scenes. In Jaws, non-diegetic music was used to foreshadow events, such as shark attacks. There was no music when the kids were faking the shark attack, only when the real shark was getting ready to strike. Also, triumphant music plays after Quint attaches the flotation barrel to the shark, but shortly after, the music changes abruptly to a more horrifying sound. This is when the shark pulls the barrel under, revealing that it has not yet been defeated. 3. Jaws is a very exciting while suspenseful horror film. The story was very fast paced and interesting. The girl gets eaten by a shark in the first five minutes of the film. After that, the story never slowed down. There was never a boring moment in Jaws. The constant anticipation kept me anxious to see what would happen next. The camera movement in this movie is spectacular; it helps to add to the suspense. At sea, the story becomes an intense battle between the three men and the shark. The music in this film, though extremely simple, When you think it is over, the shark comes back to retaliate and makes a comeback. Then the tables turn, and it seems like the shark will prevail. I thought Quints death was shocking; being one of the main characters and an experienced fisherman, I did not expect that. It was very surprising and maintained my interest even to the end of the film. The slaying of the shark and Hooper and Brodys survival made the ending of Jaws satisfying and conclusive.
