Magazine Designer (Contract) Index on Censorship is tendering for a re-design for their quarterly magazine.

As Index continues to position itself as the voice of free expression through its publishing and advocacy work, the redesigned magazine, both online and in print, will play a key role in highlighting and disseminating our work. The redesigned magazine will give Index the opportunity to engage with a wider audience and readership. Our objective is to produce a magazine that is easier to read and more accessible. We'll increase the diversity of content, types and lengths of articles and want the new design to reflect this. New elements to the redesign will include columns (for example 'News from the capital' from Delhi, Baku, etc; 'From the chief executive') and reports and updates from Index staff on advocacy work (updates on work on Belarus, for example). We are aiming for a fresh, clear, modern and international look for the magazine, reflecting the magazines high standards for editorial content and focus. We seek expressions of interest by Wednesday, 19th September. Specifications From March 2013, the magazine will be published as a short A4 publication (210mm x 280mm), publishing 100120 pages. It will remain a quarterly publication, although we anticipate that from 2014 it will be published six times a year.

Article templates (9 in all) Templates will ideally be presented in a combination of two, three and four-columns for design layout, but three columns will most likely be our standard template. We are working to an estimate of 650 words per page, though this will of course depend on font and typesize. Templates to be prepared are as follows: 1) masthead [this should appear on the same page as the editorial] 2) Editorial 3) Contents 4) Long form articles(1500-5000 words) including: o running heads o sub-heads o sample opening pages sample page with photo o sample page with pull quotes o sample page with 'boxes' for facts, short chronologies or news round-ups, quotations, and'did you know' short pieces 5) Short form articles (750-1500 words) including: o sample page with photo o sample page with pull quote 6) 1-page article or column, including one of the following: From the chief executive Index update on headline/high profile activities Manifesto Eyewitness account Shorter feature News from the capital eg Moscow, Beijing, Brussels, Delhi o Opinion piece o o o o o o

7) 1-page style sheet incorporating 2 or 3 of the following short articles: o Soapbox/opinion/up-to-the minute news analysis o Head to head debates o 2 x news from the capital, short version eg Moscow, Beijing, Brussels, Delhi o Publisher information about subscriptions and aims/scope of the organisation, approximately 500 words 8) Index Index, our chronicle of country-by-country free speech violations, short news stories of around 60 words appearing in alphabetical order by country name. Index Index runs on average around 3000 words and currently runs in three columns. Could be redesigned as a three- or four-column template. 9) We will also need a design template for the magazine's cover. It will be a standard design for each issue, so the text and a photograph/illustration will be positioned in the same way for each issue, though the image and copy will change each time (compare the Economist or Prospect magazines). o Templates should be provided in inDesign, together with precise instructions for Indexs publishers, SAGE, to incorporate into their typesetting programmes and publishing operations. o Fonts, guidelines and full style notes/sheets should also be provided. The redesign will apply directly to the print magazine, but because, through Exact Editions, SAGE offers subscribers an online version of the magazine, how the design translates to the web must be integral to the overall vision. In addition, some aspects of the design could also be applied to magazine content published on the website, so this could also inform some aspects of the design strategy. The designer will need to review sample articles once

theyre prepared by SAGEs typesetters using the new templates. The designer will also be asked to review articles at first proof stage of issue 1/2013/Volume 42 (1 February).
