Yah in the Club!
Another school year has just be-
gun. Basically, it is another chapter
of school life, especially for fresh-
men out there curious on what col-
lege life is all about. College life is
fun, only if you want to make it grati-
fying. School activities, interschool
competitions and joining any school
organization of your choice are some
of the ways that can make your col-
lege life exciting. It will not only en-
rich your knowledge in certain areas
but will also help to develop your tal-
ents and skills. Well, fret not boys and
girls, here are some of the student or-
ganizations in TIP you can check out.
Talents Guild (TG)
“Unity!”
Exclaimed Melody Labadia, a sec-
ond year Commerce student and a
member of TG for three semesters
when asked about her organization’s
outstanding trait. If you feel like you
can do the steps and ride on to the
groove, if you feel like you’ve got the
talent in dancing, then this is the right
group for you. See them perform-
ing their latest moves in almost all
the programs in the campus. Aside
from school activities, TG is also
competing on various dance con-
tests outside such as the Fubu and
Sketchers Dance Competitions. But
as stated by Melody, “Di lang sayaw,
more on samahan din, parang mag-
kakapatid at bini-build up din yung
personalities [ng mga members].”

Young Educators Club (YEC)
“Strong and will develop not only
camaraderie, but also enhances
talents”
YEC is a newly organized society,
formed last school year. The group
has been lively on several activities
like seminars, literacy outreaches
and tutorial classes. “We build our
talents,” states Renalyn Maraya, YEC
President, “we encourage students
to be exposed into community where
English is a secondary language.” As
a provisionary teacher with a major
in English she emphasized to her
fellow students to engage in com-
municative approach. “In that way”,
says Maraya, “it could enhance the
English vocabulary of the students”.

“God is good, all the time”
These religious organizations pro-
mote something other organizations
don’t — that is the foundation of hu-
man beings — faith in the Almighty.
If you think you need someone to
boost you up spiritually, then this is
the right affiliation for you. Praise
fest, youth camps, school assem-
blies and international conferences
are the activities one can expect from
YFC. But of course, making someone
“holy” is not the sole purpose of this
group. As stated by Randy Bangga,
YFC president: “para makilala si
Kristo, yun ay para maiwas sila sa
bisyo, and to improve faith in God.”
English Club
“Our club is great”
It is an organization under the
Humanities and Social Sciences
Department. April Malinao, Eng-
lish Club TTreasurer, expressed, “We
encourage students to speak up,
[and] we listen even their grammar
is wrong.” Last student organiza-
tions membership campaign held
last July, English Club is one of
the organizations that recruited the
most number of students. One of
the activities of this club is the ac-
tivity entitled “The Wise Speak”,
held every English Day, which gives
the students a chance to speak up
what’s on their minds on a certain
topic. Also if you feel like you need
to boost up your English skill, you’ll
never go wrong with this group.
Lumbre en Teatro (LENTE)
“Just like family”
LENTE, the official theatre organi-
zation of TIP was established in 2004.
In contrast to the usual notion about
them, LENTE does not focus in acting
alone, but also in singing, dancing
and stage plays. “It is for the whole
entertainment,” says Ephraem Jeru-
salem, one of the founding members,
“though we don’t get any material
benefits from it, it is the satisfaction
of entertainment, the passion for the-
atre.” The organization is planning
for a culminating activity where it will
test new members as they showcase
their talents on stage. Last 2005, TIP
Alumni Association awardted the
LENTE as the most outstanding or-
ganization. You can visit their office at
Arts and Cultural Affairs, Building 1.

The organization conducts its day
along with the celebration of Buwan
ng Wika every August 15 with various
activities such as Jingle making, Essay
Writing and Poster Making contests.
TIP Chorale Society
“The official chorale society of the
TIP”
This organization is going to the
next level under its new musical di-
rector Joel Aquino. The chorale aims
to join several national and interna-
tional competitions to promote tal-
ents of TIP students to the world.
The organization is also planning to
conduct workshops in acting, danc-
ing and personal development to
help their members become overall
performers. The group has been ac-
tive in various engagements where
they showcased their singing tal-
ent, such as in Ateneo’s “Alay Kay
Maria” and also in their concert
in SM T Taytay together with some
members of TIP Chorale in Manila.
Ok, there you go guys and gals,
the list of some of TIP’s student or-
ganizations are now at your hand.
Joining such groups and just a cou-
ple of explorations in our school
surely would not make your stay
here in TIP boring. Gather the guts
and prepare yourself and who knows
you might be the next “hot and fa-

BEARING THE THEME “MAKING THE COUNCIL OF FRATERN A

DIFFERENCE, REACHING FOR EXCEL-
LENCE”, different student organizations
participated in the 3rd Annual mem-
bership campaign held on July 1-4.
The Congregating Area was filled
with the uniquely designed booths
representing each organization. The
campaign aims to familiarize the stu-
dents with the organizations inside
the campus as well as to give them a
four-day chance to become a mem-
ber of any organization of their choice.
Aside from the previously recog-
nized organizations, newly student
organizations were also present like
the Young Educators Club (YEC) of
the education students, the Bread
Society (BREAD), a religious organi-
zation, and the Robotics and Me-
chatronics Society, an organization
of ECE, COE, EE and CE students.
During the campaign, presenta-
tions from the T Talents Guild, ACE-Q,
T BS, and LENTE enlivened the crowd.

Games were also rendered, which
were participated by the students.
On the last day of the event, an
awarding ceremony for the best booth
was held in which the Organization of
Industrial Engineering Students (ORI-
ENTS) bagged the best booth award.
Junior Philippine Institute of Architects
(JrPIA) got the second place followed
by the Mountaineering Club (MC),
United Architecture of the Philippines
Student Auxiliary (UAPSA) and Lumbre
En TTeatro (LENTE) respectively. Cash
prizes were given to the top three and
certificates of appreciation were given
to all the participants of the event.
According to the Office of Student
Affairs (OSA) report, this year’s mem-
bership campaign resulted to a 3.96%

Ayon sa National Statistical Coordination

lawigan pa rin ng Nueva Ecija ang nananatil-

Umaabot sa 646,000 sako ng bigas ang na-
kokonsumo ng mga Pilipino araw-araw at
mula dito, humigit kumulang 25,000 sako
naman ang nasasayang dahil na rin sa mal-
ing kasanayan sa paggamit at pagkonsumo ng
bigas. Katumbas ito ng isang kutsarang kan-
ing nawawaldas ng bawat isang Pilipino. Sa
mga nasasayang na ito, sapat na sana upang
makakain ang buong populasyon ng Pilipinas
sa loob ng 14 na araw.

ng ibat-ibang grupo ng mamamayan upang maipaabot sa pama-
haalan ang suliranin ukol sa walang tigil na pagsirit sa presyo ng
mga bilihin partikular na ang langis.

Pagsasamantala sa sitwasyon
Hindi pa nangangalahati ang taon ay lagpas P15.00 na ang
itinaas ng presyo ng gasolina, krudo at gaas. Dahil dito walang
naksisiguro kung mananatiling P8.50 ang halaga ng pasahe sa

Ayon sa ginawang pagsusuri ng Leauge of Filipino Students
(LFS), isang grupo ng mga estudyante mula sa iba’t-ibang uniber-
sidad dito sa Pilipinas, umabot na sa12.5% noong Mayo ang tan-
tos ng implasyon ng pangkalahatang pagtaas ng presyo ng bigas at
langis. Ilang mga ekonomista naman ang nagsabi na maaaring mas
mapabilis pa ang pagtaas ng presyo nito sa mga darating na buwan
dahil sa pagtaas ng presyo nito sa pandaigdigang merkado.
Ayon din kay Angelo Reyes, Kalihim ng Kagawaran ng Ener-
hiya (DOE), ipinalagay ng mga eksperto sa ekonomiya na magpa-
patuloy ang pagtaas ng presyo ng langis mula $150 hanggang $200
bawat bariles sa kasalukuyan hanggang sa taong 2010. Dagdag
pa ng DOE, sa kasalukuyan ang halaga ng diesel ay umabot na
sa P41.67 hanggang P43.97. Umakyat naman sa P51.57 mula sa
P49.33 ang presyo ng unleaded gasoline at P49.30 mula sa P46.15
presyo ng kerosene. Samantala, tumaas din ang halaga ng liquefied
petrolium gas (LPG) sa P62.25 mula sa P575.50 bawat 11 kilo.
Taliwas naman ang paniniwala ni dating Budget Sec. Ben-
jamin Diokno at kasalukuyang propesor ng Economics sa UP-
Diliman na maaari pang mapbaba ang presyo nito sa merkado.

$70. Kaya nagkakaron ng under-recovery e,” idinagdag ni Dio-
kno sa panayam niya sa isang TV Network.

Pagsagip sa interes
Sa ilalim ng RA (Republic Act) 8479 na batayan ng de-
regulasyon sa downstream oil industry, ang taripa sa inaang-
kat na krudo at petrolyo ay nasa tatlong porsyento. Tinatawag

itong ad valorem tax dahil ang pagsisingil ay ayon sa bahagdan
ng bolyum ng mga inaangkat. Sa administrasyon nina Estrada at
Arroyo, pansamantalalng tinanggal o binawasan ang buwis na
ito para makatulong sa pagpapababa sa presyo ng mga produk-
tong pertolyo.
Sa kabilang banda, isinusulong ang pagsususpindi o pagba-
bawas sa ad valorem tax samantalng ang VAT (Value Added Tax)
ay iminumungkahi naman ng mga nasa kapangyarihan. Kung su-
sumahin, ayon sa opinyon ni Danilo Araña Arao, isang manunulat

niya na mula nang ipatupad ang deregulasyon noong 1996 sa ila-
lim ng RA 8180 (Na ibinasura ng Korte Suprema noong 1997),

you are doing. Th is would give you the idea
that you can achieve your goal. Do not lose
hope easily. What you’re doing now will
surely have benefits for you. Just believe on
yourself.
Dieting takes one step at a time. Ap-

weight, but will also improve the health of
every person. Just remember that dieting to
achieve good health should not be in a hurry.

Piece of gratitude
I remember one day when I was on my
way to Divisoria together with my friends Iza
and Michelle, a bare-footed dirty boy (who
is more or less 9 years old) rode in the jeep-
ney we were riding. He gave us envelopes
with notes saying, “Konting tulong lang
po para pangkain. Maraming salamat po”.
I pitied the kid because for me, he doesn’t
deserve what he is experiencing now and
I know that you would agree with me. He is
supposed to be in school, studying his les-
sons and mingling with his classmates and
friends enjoying his childhood instead of
roaming around the busy streets and beg-
ging for alms from unknown people. Then
I asked myself, where are his parents? Why
do they allow their children to work instead
of sending them to school? I felt bad against
the parents of this kid. They are so irrespon-
sible! As parents (though I am not yet a
parent), I believe that, they should already
know their primary responsibilities. They
should know that it is their job and obliga-
tion to work in order to provide the needs
of their child.
Anyway, you might ask, what is
this girl saying? I just actually want to em-
phasize to my fellow students that through
this example, we are so blessed because
we are all given the opportunities that not
all people have. We have chances to study
and be educated for our future. Let us take
advantage and not waste these opportuni-
ties being offered to us. Right now, we are
all aware that our country is currently and
continuously experiencing different crises
and EDUCATION is one of the best bequests
our parents can give to us to cope from it.
Let us be grateful that we have responsible
and loving parents who are so supportive in
providing us our needs.

for this column. The passage says: “We
were made for Thee, and our hearts are
restless until they rest in Thee.” It some-
how made me realize that nothing exists
eternally; that nothing is permanent – all
are ephemeral; and all people are frantic
throughout their living until they are al-
ready with God.

I now appreciate all that I have. Appre-
ciation makes me feel things are valuable
than ever. Having good friends and a sup-
portive family are some of the reasons for
me to be grateful. They made me whole
and taught me how to be me. I love them
even better as time goes by. But every
time I ponder on Melville’s conviction that
all shall come to an end, regret surges in
my mind. There are many “what if’s?” that
hover and augment my desire to bring
back the time and change it into something
worthy for Him. Such questions like: What
if I made my life more meaningful? Should
I be presently living in contentment?
I was devoured by multitude of missed
opportunities and hampered by the imper-
tinent words I have said.
I am on the verge of graduating but I
am also on the loose of giving up and re-
ceding the trials that come along my way.
Though some harbor undoubtedly that
these “short-lived” hardships could be
surpassed naturally, I still dare myself to
prove these as nothing but ingenious sup-
position. I am not being cynical anyway.
Nevertheless, many of my colleagues treat
me as one. I just find it hard to believe in
the immensity of things. For the most part,
such serious fact as “death” reminds me of
my limitations, which confines me in a sol-

in each issue, I know I have to submit a worth
reading article and comply with the dead-
lines given to us by our seniors or else… I
should face the consequence… MEMO! But
it is not always about that; I also learned
that if we really want to achieve something,
we really have to work hard for it.
At first, I thought that it would be easy
to apply as TIP VOICE staff. But after taking
a long competitive examination and going
through series of interviews with the edi-
tors and some school officers, I realized that
it was not easy. But still, I did my best as an
applicant because I know that it is my goal
and I want to achieve it.
With this experience, I learned that to
attain our goals, we should always strive
hard and be dedicated in doing it. We can-
not get things in just a snap. We will never
be successful in our life if we will just wait
for the so-called chances or opportunities
to come without doing anything. And of
course, once we started doing it, let’s just
continue and never get tired. We should al-
ways be responsible in every tasks and ob-
ligations regardless of how hard they seem
to be because we will also be the ones who
are going to benefit from all the things we
do.
Aside from that, being a part of this
organization also gave me a chance to
gain more friends. I would like to show
my appreciation to all of the VOICE staff
who warmly accepted me when I was still
a trainee. I never felt indifference since I
was a new staff. They guided me in all of
the things that I have to do and they treated
me nicely as if we’re really a family. For that,
THANK YOU. I am so grateful to be a part of
the VOICE family.

The morning before I wrote this, I was
greeted by lots of pending paper works
to be submitted to my instructors and to
this publication. But I was caught between
cleaning my room and coming up to a
“credible” excuse letter for my absence in
my classes. Good thing I have a multi-task-
ing and jack-of-all trade- wanna-be friend
who you are, next week nalang yung bayad
ah!) But in a split second, a minute of reali-
zation went across my thought: That I am
so blessed because God permitted me to
live on the face of the earth. However, a ve-
hement denial tapped my face and pushed
me to think on my abstruse apprehensions
about life.

It is true that our hearts are restless
until we find rest in Thee. And as I was do-
ing this article, I am at ease that my cousin
is with Him right now. I offer this writing
to him for his leaving – unwanted leaving.

Glasses the melting pot
I started writing this column right after I
have finished watching a very inspiring and
touching movie. The movie is entitled Mr.
Holland’s Opus. The story is about the life of
a professional musician who would like to
spend more time composing but ended up
as a music teacher in a secondary school to
teach music appreciation.
At first, teaching doesn’t have any ap-
peal on him but he just entered teaching to
find some time to write his own composi-
tion. But then he found teaching very fulfill-
ing and satisfying, so he devoted most of his
time in teaching.
He was able to help several students to
excel on the field of music and all of his ef-
forts paid off in the end. It inspired me a lot
because Mr. Holland, in every sense of the
word, is an epitome of a dedicated teacher.
The best part was when his students
gathered together, from past to present, to
pay respect on his retirement. The line that I
like best in the movie was delivered by Ger-
trude, the student that Mr. Holland taught on
his first year of teaching to play the clarinet
with intense feeling. She said, “Mr. Holland
had a profound influence on my life and on
a lot of lives I know. But I have a feeling that
he considers a great part of his own life mis-
spent. Rumor had it he was always work-
ing on this symphony of his. And this was
going to make him famous, rich, probably
both. But Mr. Holland isn’t rich and he isn’t
famous, at least not outside of our little town.
So it might be easy for him to think himself
a failure. But he would be wrong, because I
think that he’s achieved a success far beyond
riches and fame. Look around you. There

It seems that since I first entered the
premises of this institution, I always hear from
my colleagues here in VOICE that most of the
TIPians are being more and more passive,
meaning they opt not to involve themselves
in any activities that are primarily intended
for them. Well, undoubtedly it’s true. I once
joined an essay-writing contest sponsored
by one organization under our department.
The contest is open for all courses under the
department so I did not let the opportunity
pass. But guess what? No one else mind to
join the competition except me! Not even
the members of that sponsoring organiza-
tion cared to participate in the contest. What
a waste of time, effort and resources for
people who don’t even pay attention. Pag-
katapos ipaglaban ng mga officers ang line
up ng activities nila sa OSA, ganun lang? [As
a matter of fact, as I write this column, I am
also waiting for students who are to join the
tutorial I’ve scheduled today, pero ni anino
ng isa man lang wala pa, at mukhang wala
nang dadating.] And this problem is evident
not just in a specific department or organiza-
tion, but also for the whole institution. The
result of the membership campaign this July
is a frowning no.% decrease in number of
members. Most organizations suffered sig-
nificant decline in number of members ex-
cept for academic organizations, particularly
under the HSSD, whose advisers promise in-
centives in grades. Paano naman yung mga
non-academic organizations na walang mai-
ooffer na incentive sa grades kundi yung
mga activities lang nila?
For this, TIPians deserve earsplitting
round of applause from organization offic-
ers as well as from people whose resources,
time and effort were wasted.

Letting go doesn’t mean giving up... it
means moving on. It is one of the hardest
things a person can do. Starting at birth, we
grasp on to anything we can get our hands
on, and hold on as if we will cease to exist
when we let go. We feel that letting go is
giving up, quitting, and that as we all know
is cowardly. But as we grow older we are
forced to change our way of thinking. We
are forced to realize that letting go means ac-
cepting things that cannot be. It means ma-
turing and moving on, no matter how hard
you have to fight yourself to do so.

ernment data, that it is the poor who pays 90
percent of the VAT on oil and power, as op-
posed to PGMA’s claim that it is the rich who

account be factual, we Filipinos should be

ZTE execs gave her a 13 under par/59 on a
par 72.
For me, grades aren’t enough. She de-
serves thunderous clapping from the starv-
ing Filipinos and deafening commendation
from various militant groups. As bonus, she
is privileged to watch a special performance
from a cheering squad composed of angry

PRO-LIFE OR POOR LIFE?

Growing population, this was the most demanding issue
and impending national crisis of the Philippines today, accord-
ing to the National Statistics Office (NSO) the projected popula-
tion of 2008 was about 90.7 million. On the other hand accord-
ing to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) World Fact book,
during the first quarter of this year, the country has a total of
92,681,453 with an estimated growth rate of 1.76%. These fig-
ures shows that the Philippines is facing a scenario where birth
rate is uncontrollable and the sustainability to feed the people
will decrease rapidly. As a result, the government will have to
increase budget just to create programs that will help the people
prop up to earn a living and have food to eat at least three times
a day. Moreover, with the kind of situation where prices are high
and basic commodities are affected by unpredictable inflation
the crisis on poverty will eventually rise.
The House Bill 5034 or the Reproductive Health Act of 2008,
is still in the midst of a battle zone, now it is being admonish and
later it will face ABOLITION? During the 9th SONA of PGMA she
emphasized the importance of life and she preferred to have a
policy of natural family planning. The Catholic church together
with other PRO-life advocates strongly affirmed on the proper
planning of family in accordance with the teachings of the
Bible, they even conducted signature campaigns to support the
rescindment of the bill. They feared the constant usage of artificial
birth control which may lead into a critical choice of couples to
have an abortion and not preserving the values of humane family
living. According to the article of Dahli Aspillera of Malaya, “This
bill does not allow abortion. It’s about contraception, no murder; no fetus killed.” In
same way Rep. Edcel Lagman one of the major proponents, said
that the bill is not about condoms or pills and niether it is religion. It is primarily
health and rights, adding also that reproductive health as a basic human
right that the government should promote and protect.
The issues on reproductive health might have been resolved
earlier if the country is not in the situation where religion is the
dominant constitution and the government is the submissive in-
stitution. Otherwise, proponents of the Bill need to work double
time in order to gain numbers in the Congress to pursue for a
proper deliberation.
It is a challenge now for either PROS and CONS and the
President to have an initiative to create action plans that will
answer our problems on poverty and population. Atleast be
united for the growing poor Filipinos and not by using them for
numbers of your vote.

Critical times...
A Review
The recent political, social and eco-
nomic status of our country is merely the
reflection of what type of leaders we have
today. It is a call of urge for people to prove
their worth to govern responsibly and not
to earn easily. I remember an interview in
a news program with an eight-year old boy
in an exclusive school. The boy was asked
about our government leaders and he an-
swered, “Shame on you, you betray me and
my generation.” Obviously at young age,
he knows how to respond articulately and
burst his opinion, that in reality change is
needed. Anyway, before I became exhaust-
ed with this topic it is a pleasure to share
thoughts, sights and opinions about our ex-
acerbating country.
For years, I’ve been dreaming of a sta-
ble life that all resources are within grasp
in a matter of short terms. In that span of
time nothing happened, still it worsens. Fili-
pinos had gone to changing phases led by
14 Presidents who promulgated trademark
policies. However, were these promises re-
ally brought to people and meant for peo-
ple. It seems we were being fooled by dif-

stage during electoral campaigns? Well,
pity for us Pinoys who once fought for inde-
pendence and fled from bondage.
Of the number of policies, we have
heard from our leaders, larger percentages
became mocked or when implemented,
popularity – not service comes first. In view
of this, we Filipinos sometimes have been
in the culture of “ningas-kugon”, a collo-
quial phrase-turned-policy that emphasizes
doing good first at first terms but losing at
the end. We do hope that this will not dis-
mantle others by taking into consideration
that people are for the common good. It’s a
choice, we are about 92 million in the archi-
pelago: large enough to set our ideal gov-
ernment and embark our cultivated policies
without obstruction, but with conviction.
On the other hand, however, such word,
as IDEAL cannot be achieved in ages. It can
be possible if there is an amalgam of relia-
ble policies and manly personalities. Going
back to the young boy, if we can only create
a good government and instill the responsi-
bility of public service, that maybe an hon-
est appraisal, he will sound bound for true

“Thinking in English, Speaking in English”
We all understand English. All of us
here in TIP, without any exception, un-
derstand English. Your admission to TIP
for a college degree means you know
enough English.
You sit in your class and you listen to
your professor lecturing in English and
you actually understand him.
You hear other people conversing in
English and you can understand them.
You watch TV shows in English
and you enjoy the jokes and the songs.
You watch English movies and you are
moved to tears and you enjoy the ac-
tion. You read English newspapers. You
read application forms in English and
you can answer them. We can all write
in English. All of us actually understand
English.
But how come when we want to
speak English, we cannot? We have
difficulty reciting in English in class.
We have a hard time answering simple
questions in English in conversations
with our teachers and our school ad-
ministrators.
The problem, I think, is because we
do not think in English. One has to think
in English so that it is just a matter of
expressing those English thoughts into
spoken English words.
You cannot think in Filipino then ex-
pect yourself to translate instantly the
Filipino ideas in your mind into English
speech.
The good jobs out there in the work-
place require that you can speak English.
If not fluently, at least passably.

MASTER IN PRODUCTIVITY AND QUALITY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
VALEDICTORY ADDRESS
It has been several weeks since I
first learned that I would have the honor
of speaking here today. After the initial
euphoric rush of joy and gratitude, only
one emotion remained until now: PANIC.
This is not the fear of speaking in front of
a crowd; after more than two decades of
being in the academe, I have mastered
the delicate art of being called to speak
impromptu in countless supposedly in-
tellectual fora. No, the root of this panic
is far more disturbing; I have to convince
myself and all of you present this after-
noon that the five minutes or so that you’ll
be spending with me at this very moment
will be of “quality” and far more valuable
than spending it elsewhere. The oppor-
tunity cost should be worth it. Yet I will
be honest and tell you that even as I sat
in front of my laptop at three o’clock this
morning, I am still uncertain of where my
address is headed. So I decided to just
let my thoughts flow through in the hope
that it will all make sense in the end.
To the members of the Board of Trus-
tees, the President, and all the other of-
ficers of DAP, our distinguished guest
speaker, our dear professors present
here this afternoon, parents and friends,
my dear fellow graduates, ladies and gen-
tlemen, good afternoon.
I am absolutely certain that all the
members of the MPQM graduating class
will agree with me that the past two years
was both joyful, yet dotted with grief,…
victorious, yet along the way filled with
the reality of humbling setbacks. Ours
is a pioneering academic program here
at Development Academy of the Philip-
pines, so the emcee said. And you will
hear constantly being echoed through-
out the program something to do with
productivity and quality or (P&Q), and the
challenge set before us that we are sup-
posed to be catalysts of positive change
in this dear country of ours. But P&Q, we
were taught, does not happen overnight.
It is supposed to be a continuous spiral-
ing PDCA cycle – Plan, Do, Check, and
Act – with all the different strategies like
benchmarking, change management,
knowledge management and others,
which will ensure all our efforts to be pro-
ductive and of excellent quality.
History tells us about the multifarious

Companies that are recruiting here at
TIP from among our graduates such as
Aboitiz, Accenture and IBM Daksh have
specifically told us that what is needed
by our graduates is the ability to speak
in good English.
Other schools are emphasizing the
need to speak in English. The CHED en-
joins all schools to improve the quality
of the English used.
So if you yourself are convinced
about the importance of English, then
you have to commit yourself to it. There
is only so much the school can do.
We have tried to encourage all of you
to speak in English. We have provided
you the Speech Labs. We have provided
you the English room where the main
condition is everyone speaks in English,
rightly or wrongly. We have reminded

times when our country has been sub-
jected to ostensibly unceasing political,
social, and economic arrests, both in the
past and in the not-so-distant past. It is as
though we cannot go beyond the tales of
our past. And yet, at another time in our
nation’s flow of history, we have reached
this juncture of tumultuous global trade
which paradoxically created – with much
disparity – a widening gap between the
haves and the have-nots, where the value
of integrity is almost likely becoming an
intolerable norm in a political sense, and
where our people are seemingly becom-
ing socially and culturally dislocated. In
the past few months, we have been held
captive by reports of alleged large-scale
corruption in the government implicating
some of our high-ranking bureaucrats,
the web of which points to the top ech-
elon of our nation’s governance. Whether
or not the extent of the truth paraded be-
fore our consciousness implicates those
who are the perpetrators of this impasse
(based upon the testimonies of certain
bold individuals who have chosen to
walk from their shadows), we have been
taken aghast by the reality of deeply-en-
trenched corruption lurking behind the
boulders of our system. We need not
look for a more contextual example than
the case of the much talked-about NBN-
ZTE mess. The conspicuous fact, for in-
stance, is now a matter of public knowl-
edge, in which 20 percent overprice for a
government contract would qualify as ac-
ceptable or moderate greed. To put this
in another term, kickbacks of 20 percent
are the “norms” in government transac-
tions. This, indeed, is a flagrant case of
dysfunctional procurement system. As in
the words of the Senate’s star witness, in
its inquiry into the controversial NBN-ZTE
deal, the government’s procurement sys-
tem is really a trap because institutionally
the process is supply-driven rather than
driven by need, where projects land in
the hands of suppliers who have ties with
those who are in power.
In the light of what we have learned
these past two years at the Academy,
I urge each of my classmates: do not
let those years pass and be forgotten.
Rather, pursue the vision of learning that
we have here begun. Take control of all
opportunities that will appear our way
our teachers to speak in English, to de-
liver lectures in English.
We also enjoin our employees to
speak in English. All in an effort to pro-
vide an atmosphere conducive for all of
us to speak in English.
But you have to help yourselves. My
suggestion is that you group yourselves
into groups of 5 or 6 friends or class-
mates and agree to speak among your-
selves in English. Do not laugh at your
group mates as they comamit mistakes.
As you keep on striving, you will get bet-
ter at it.
Agree among yourselves as a group
that you have to teach yourselves about
the technique I am sharing with you.
And what is that? Think in English. What
you could otherwise say in Filipino when
you are hanging out by yourselves, you
just phrase in English. “Magdaldalan
Kayo” in English. If the group is very un-
derstanding of each other, you should
be able to feel free to speak in English.
And remove the element of “hiya” or be-
ing ashamed about making a mistake or
being labeled as “an Inglisero,” So what?
You will land the good attractive jobs in
the future.
These little groups of 5 can merge
with other groups later on to a point
where no one in TIP community will
even feel conscious or feel different
when speaking in English.
We all understand English so let us
bring that knowledge one more step for-
ward by actually speaking English. Do
not be concerned about the grammar.
where we, as an individual or together
with our team, make a difference for the
better in the lives of our fellow Filipinos.
Our culture will encourage us to engage
in mediocrity, pwede na yan; the modern
university will tempt us to treat learning as
the accumulation of unrelated facts to be
crammed, regurgitated, and forgotten…
walang kwenta. Do not give in to these.
Let us remember the example of our dear
professors, men and women who for a
small token judged it necessary to pass
on the wisdom that God and experience
has granted them.
Dear classmates, let us dedicate
ourselves anew! As the imminent Eng-
lish scientist Thomas Henry Huxley said
and I quote,… “the great end of life is not
knowledge, but action.”
Yet we are one in paying tribute to
that old man with a funny hand gesture
and a distinct voice who humanized and
set in perspective that ultimately, if one
is not able to apply personally what you
intend to do with your own organization,
it will al be meaningless.
I will be remiss if I fail to mention that
the success of this pioneering efforts of
DAP towards the fulfillment of a gradu-
ate program in P&Q, as well as the rel-
evance of the honor bestowed upon me
as Primus Inter Pares was made possible
because of the presence, physically and
in spirit, of all my batchmates. To Arlene
and Neth, Bong, Erwin, Jarvis, Mard and
Mel, … I am very certain that all of you
will …
In behalf of the pioneer class of the
MPQM Program, let me also humbly ar-
ticulate our collective thank you to all who
supported us prayerfully and financially
through all these years. It is my distinct
honor to pay tribute to all the husbands,
the wives, the parents, and the signifi-
cant others who lovingly and dedicatedly
made this milestone possible for all of us
this afternoon. Finally, we thank our Sav-
ior, Jesus Christ, who redeems our intel-
lects as well as our souls and calls upon
all of us to be given unto His reasonable
service.

Voice Issue 6.1
Do not be worried about the subject-
verb agreement whether you should
use “is” or you should use “are.” As you
really get serious about learning how to
speak in English and as you listen to oth-
er people speaking in English, take note
about how things are said, how things
are phrased. Learn idiomatic expres-
sions. The more you listen, the more you
will learn. When you finally learn how to
speak in English, English will naturally
come to you. You will know by ear that
what you are saying is correct because
it sounds right.
To summarize, think English. Speak
in English. Continue to watch English
movies and English TV Shows. Read
English newspapers and magazines.
Listen how English is spoken. And just
keep on trying to speak in English. Let us
all help each other so we can all speak
in English.
I am leaving this “speak English
project” to the Supreme Student Gov-
ernment and the Department Organiza-
tions to implement. I would like you to
lead by example. Convert your Filipino
speaking barkada or officer grouping to
an English-speaking group. Start with
you, the officers, in your day-to-day
dealings and in your meetings. If eve-
ryone is already speaking in English, it
becomes so natural that no one will feel
ashamed to speak the language. Start
with your own group or barkada.
Find your voice. In the ultimate
analysis, mastering any language needs
practice.
I think you are ready. You all under-
stand English. All you have to do now is
to speak English.

Me, Trip to Jerusalem, Banana Eating
Contest and Coke and Calamansi Re-
lay were conducted to further enter-
tain the crowd.
After the said activities, CBE stu-
dents proved their intellectual busi-
ness capacity as they battle with the
CBE Faculty in a quiz bee conducted
at the PE Center. The intensity in-
creased as the dance and singing
contests started. Four teams and four
contestants that emerged victorious
from the elimination round competed
in the finals, followed by the continu-
ation of the Amazing Race, for third
and fourth year students.
For the highlight of the event,
contestants romp off the court for
the much awaited Mr. and Ms. CBE.
Loud cheers and applause from the
crowd filled the PE Center as their
bet displayed their confidence as
they walked on their formal attire and
evening dresses. Also, last year’s Ms.
CBE, Honey Angeli Olimpo together
with Ms. CBE runner-ups, flounced at
the party showcasing their beauties
thru their lovely gowns. For the finale,
question and answer portion took
part where each candidate proved
the brains they got behind their good
looks. But the winners of the said
contest were not declared yet.
According to Jonnaliza Santos,
DSG-CBE President “The showcase
was just 50%, the other half will be
from the students, and this will be in
form of voting”. She also said that this
was the idea of Dr. Evelita Celis, Dean
of CBE. This is to have interactions
from the CBE students. Ballot forms
are available at the Commerce Office
and Mac Office, just ask the secretary.
Voting is until August 20. The corona-
tion of the winners will be on Septem-
ber 25.
For this year’s theme, the credit
goes to Jonnaliza Santos. “I was
walking in the footbridge along Au-
rora, on my way to school, when I
noticed the billboard of Business Mir-
ror”. She stated, “ the billboard says:
‘A Broader Look at Today’s business’,
then I thought to myself, they are to-
day, we will conquer tomorrow. And
OPINION
so I came up with that theme.” Prior
to the occasion, the CBE student of-
ficers conducted a meeting with the
academic organizations. Dissemina-
tion of tasks and monitoring had been
discussed. Great involvement from
the whole department was also one
of the keys that made the celebration
a success. “Lahat gumalaw, from the
academic ogrs, hanggang faculty, la-
hat nag-contribute” says Santos. “
I hope that after graduation, we will
prove it, being the pride and asset
of a company, not only on back draft
and t-shirt.”
The affair ended with a nightlong
rave party at the PE Center.

Hopeful
Is a multimillion reward enough for the Filipino athletes to
strive harder to bring home the very first Olympic gold medal
of the Philippines?
According to the reports obtained from an Internet source,
the reward for the Filipino who will win the very first Olym-
pic gold medal for the Philippines has reached for about 9.5
million pesos or 214,000 US Dollars. Sports apparel No Fear,
the Microsoft Philippines, Chevron, Filipino-Chinese busi-
ness tycoon Lucio T Tan, boxing champ Manny Pacquiao and
the Philippine government, through the Incentives Act, alto-
gether promised to reward the first local athlete who can end
the 80-year gold-medal hunt in the said quadrennial games.
However, before the athletes went to Beijing, President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo raised the Olympic incentive to 15 million
pesos.
But at this very moment, An Olympic gold medal has been
very aloof for the Philippines. Since we first joined the Olympic
Games in 1924, only nine medals, specifically two silver and
seven bronze, are seized by the Filipino athletes.
When will be the time that we can earn first Olympic gold
medal? However, the Filipino athletes in Beijing do not lose
hope in digging up one, competing about 10,700 players from
different countries around the world.
Way back during the Atlanta Olympics, bronze medallist in
Boxing Onyok Velasco was also promised incentives by some
politicians, but until now, this Ilonggo boxer is not receiving
any promised amount. It seems that the politicians just used
him for publicity. And now, there are a lot of offers given to
whoever the first Filipino to bag the very first gold medal. What
might happen next?

student. Everything comes complicated especially when my
professors set examination dates all at once. Another prob-
lem is the adjustment on how a professor teaches the class.
There are some who just go on with the time saying just “blah

to realize that there is a place for sharing their God-given
craft. Without an ACA Director will keep the organizations
instability and will create queries from several members of
different talent groups. Realizing also that TIP collects Cul-
tural and Activity fee worth Php 22.55 in the total miscel-
laneous fees making it more competitive to prove that the
office will stand and support programs. It is also enough to
financially work developmental programs that will aid each
member organizations. Through this budget, TIP can pro-
vide scholarships to deserving and yet talented students,
provide leadership and teambuilding programs, arrange
workshops for various field of art and mandate long term
plans that will continuously promote TIP’s talented indi-
viduals. These could be the major responsibilities of the in-
stitution as well as the person that will work for the growth
of ACA.
TIP has been the forefront for educational advancement
it has no reasons for it to remain inactive beyond quality
education, moreover EQUALITY must be emphasized.
