WHETHER you like it or not, you have power over others. If you dont believe me, replace the word power with influence. Oh, youll be surprised at the amount of influence you have on the people around you. People follow you. (Thats John Maxwells simple definition of leadership. If no one is following you, youre just Today, I receive all of taking a walk.) Gods love for me. Parents, youre leading your kids. HOLY SEX: Change Addiction to Ambition

AT the second leg of our series Money, Sex, and Power, Bro. Bo Sanchez gave a talk on yet another controversial topic: Sex. Bro. Bo said unlike what many think today, sex is not a high five, nor a hand shake. It is not a casual way of relating to another person because you can never be casual with sex. As 1 Corinthians 6:15-20 puts it: Do you not know that your body is member of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that your body is temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. Bro. Bo emphasized that the act of sex is sacred because it is not just your body which is involved, but also your soul. Sex bonds you with a certain person not just body to body but soul to soul. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Your body is not your own. Thus, God is saying that bypassing His laws will destroy us, especially if we claim sex as our own and not as a gift from God. Bro. Bo illustrated his point through a top of the line chefs knife worth P10,000. The valuable knife was made to cut the best steaks and contribute in cooking the best gourmet dishes in top hotels and restaurants. The knife was made for a beautiful purpose. But if a serial killer steals the knife and uses it to kill people, he destroys its purpose. Sex is like the expensive knife. God made sex wonderful and beautiful but men are using sex for wicked purposes. The world has abducted sex and claimed it to be ours when it CUTS LIKE A KNIFE. Bro. Bo says that just like a knife which may be used for bad as is naturally Gods well as good purposes, sex can be ugly possession. He made or beautiful. great sex for married gets because of the act. Gods Thoughts Are Deeper Than Mans

THE GOSPEL from Mark 8: 27 35 presents Jesus as he asks His disciples who people say He is, and who they themselves think He is. Peter replies that He is the Christ, but Jesus warns them not to tell the revelation to anyone. Jesus speaks openly about His coming suffering, death, and resurrection. He rebukes Peter for thinking not as God, but as man. And He tells the crowd that anyone who wishes to follow Him must take up his cross and follow Him. Fr. Ike Veloso said that just as Peter was unable to grasp the real mission of Jesus, sometimes we dont see the answer of God to our prayers because we are looking at other ways by which we can receive His response. Theologians have proposed answers to why Jesus did not want His identity to be revealed after Peter has rightly answered His question on who they say He was. During that time, the Jews were under Roman rule, and they were waiting for a political messiah who would release them from the oppression of the Romans. Peter also thought that way. The Lord thinks otherwise. People are slaves of sin, the devil, of evil. Jesus came to save us from that, not through the way the Jewish people thought of, but by the way of the Cross. The Fathers strategy is love, and the Cross is an expression of love. Do we have other concepts of salvation? What is enslaving us today? God offers us many kinds of salvation, but we may be thinking of other ways. The Lord goes to the root of our problems, and so we pray that we be granted the faith to see His ways in answering our prayers. It may not be what we expect, but it surely is the best. -- Bella Estrella Photo by Ramel Robles

lives-- through sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies among others. It can make you so small that all you will be about is just porn and you wont even think outside of it. After a few exposures, the desire grows even more up to the point that you will sacrifice everything for it. Bro. Bo also discussed another addiction: casual sex. He said since sex is part of your body and soul, casual sex is like giving a piece of your body and soul to someone else. And if you have several sexual partners, the pieces of you are scattered to several persons, thus you become fragmented. 3. Shift Attention from Addiction to Ambition. Bro. Bo shocked us with this statement: You dont have sexual needs. You have sexual desires. Need is different from desire. If youre not married, you can survive without sex. Even in marriage, sex is just a small part of the relationship. Thus, Bro. Bo advised to re-channel sexual energy to fuel your ambition. You can transform your sexual energy into reaching your dreams and passion for life! Instead of paying positive or negative attention to your addictions, focus on your ambitions. Focus on your passion and live for something bigger than yourself. --Kristine Anne Mutuc Photo by ELS

Talk 3: Holy Power A Real Leader Lays Down His Life for Others
Matthew 20:20-26 Then the mother of Zebedees sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him. What is it you want? he asked. She said, Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom. You dont know what you are asking, Jesus said to them. Can you drink the cup I am going to drink? We can, they answered. Jesus said to them, You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father. When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. Jesus called them together and said, You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. John 10:14-15 I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know mejust as the Father knows me and I know the Fatherand I lay down my life for the sheep.

MINISTRIES

HAVE you ever felt a deep sense of anger? How about hurt or resentment? A feeling so painful that its eating up your spirit? What if those feelings were directed to someone whos tightly connected to you like your parents, siblings, spouse or kids? I carried such feelings before I started attending the Feast. Days before, I just got out of a manipulative relationship which consumed me for the longest time. Like a ship without a sail, I felt lost, going nowhere. More than anything else, I was angry, hurt, and resentful. Then, at the Feast, it was announced that there would be an Inner Healing stream at the Kerygma Conference 2011. Immediately, I felt that the stream was what I desperately needed. Kerygma, a Greek word that means proclamation of the Gospel, is the name chosen by Bro. Bo Sanchez for the publication that is now the leading inspirational magazine in the Philippines. Through the years, Kerygma has been blessed with hundreds of readers and Bro. Bo met with the readers in rallies throughout the country. Such rallies turned into the Kerygma Conference which started at the Philsports Arena on Nov. 24-25, 2007. Kerygma Conference 2011 centered on the theme Glory to Glory, a promise of

renewal that made me feel my heart telling me to take courage and go. Its one of the best decisions Ive ever made. The speakers were awesome, the sharing was moving and the Minstrels of Hopes version of the Lion Sleeps Tonight was amazing.

The Inner Healing stream mounted a Freedom Wall where you could write down the chain of negative emotions that has prevented you from living a victorious life. I wrote on the wall all my anger and afterwards, wow, I was free! I knew that healing and blessings poured from the heavens that day. How did I know? Because I entered broken and emerged renewed. I even gained a new friend along the way. Last year, God taught me that Im transformed from Glory to Glory. This year, I cant wait to hear how hes going to make me into a Champion.

Toast to Triumph
By BELLA ESTRELLA CELEBRATE new beginnings and a toast to triumph at Le Pavillon. Thats the first line of the information on the website of Le Pavillion, a venue for a variety of occasions, located at the Metropolitan Park, just a five-minute drive from SM Mall of Asia. On November 19, 2011, I did celebrate a new beginning and a toast to triumph at Le Pavilion, which was the venue of the Faith Stream of the Kerygma Conference 2011. Founded in 2007 by Bro. Bo Sanchez with his faith community, the Light of Jesus Family, Kerygma Conference is now the biggest Catholic learning event in the country. Gathering some 10,000 participants, Kerygma Conference is an annual event, discussing Catholic issues and practical living in the modern times. The conference stemmed from rallies of the readers of Kerygma, an inspirational magazine Bro. Bo founded named after the Greek word kerygma which means proclaiming the Gospel. Recently at the Feast PICC, Bro. Bo launched Kerygma Conference 2012, to be held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena and the SMX Convention Center by the Manila Bay on November 24 to 25. During the launch, Bro. Bo announced that Kerygma Conference 2012 centers on the theme Champions Arise! I cant wait to become a champion! The launch brought back memories of my experience at the Kerygma Conference last year. I am a volunteer catechist, so I need to continuously deepen my faith which I should share to my students. I am also a member of the Feast Media Ministry, so I chose to write about the Faith Stream in last years Kerygma Conference for The Feast bulletin. Bro. Bo confirmed my decision when he said in his welcome remarks, The Faith Stream is especially for people who want a deeper understanding and application of our Catholic faith. That day, November 19, 2011, Le Pavillion transformed into a church structure, complete with stained glass, making me feel secure in a solid Church that has withstood the test of time. My Church continues to stand erect despite turbulent episodes in its more than 2,000 years of existence because Jesus said so when He spoke to Peter in Matthew 16:18

Q and A
Im starting my own business soon but Im a beginner. Will I learn business fundamentals in the Business Stream? -- Bob A. Starting a business is a spiritual journey --- your faith in God, yourself and in your business are key to long-term success. The Business Stream will not only give you insights on key factors for success but will also inspire you to take that first step into this business spiritual journey. Will there be an exercise where in we can learn how to do a business plan? -- Katie As the stream is scheduled only for a half day, sad to say, there will be no time for a workshop. You will, however, be in the company of entrepreneurs and business advisers where you can get a network of contacts and seek out mentors. Always remember, a business will never survive without Gods grace and the guidance from good leaders. .. you are rock, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And Jesus words are proven true all the time. The main speaker, Manila Archbishop Chito Tagle, presented a glimpse on the life of Pope Benedict XVI, showing how God can make something great out of a once shy, soft-spoken, and silent boy. Bishop Tagle pointed out Pope Benedict came from a simple family. His life revolved only on family, liturgy, and the surrounding nature. His childhood was marred by the Nazi movement. I love to think how his father, a policeman, risked his career by going against the dictator. If only all the Catholics today will stand up for what is righteous, then God can also make great things out of that conviction. How I dream for that day. At the Faith Stream, I met participants who shared with me wonderful, edifying blessings. Read on...

Arlene and me Arlene Batislaong, mother of three, serves as photographer for the Feast Media Ministry. Last year, she covered the Faith Stream with me. One part of the event was a procession of the Blessed Sacrament, led by Fr. Steve Tynan, the spiritual adviser of the Light of Jesus Family. As she took photos of the procession, I saw Arlene shedding tears. Her heart was captivated by that Holy Presence. Ive always been amazed at how Jesus touches souls whenever He passes by in the Blessed Sacrament. There has always been that inexplicable presence that never fails to move the heart of those who see Him. The Faith Stream in the past Kerygma Conferences had been a most beautiful experience to all who came to attend it because the knowledge about our faith imparted therein did not stick to the mind alone, but sank deep into their heart. This year, Catholic Faith is on November 24, the first day of Kerygma Conference 2012. Jesus beacons us, Come, taste and see the goodness of the Lord. Yes, come, celebrate new beginnings and a toast to triumph!

An approachable and friendly man by the name of Sebastian Steve Tamayo graces our Feast every Sunday morning, not to feed people as he usually does but to be fed by the Word of God. Steve Tamayo at the Feast Why a successful man like Steve needs a weekly dose of inspiration from the Feast? He probably already has everything he needs-a beautiful family and financial abundance. But little does everyone know that our Bro. Steve Tamayo would admit that he would never attain such fame and fortune without his unshakable faith in God. Bro. Steve gladly recalled how he was invited to the happiest place on Earth. Bro. Adrian Panganiban, Sucat Feast Builder, met him in Fr. Eric Santoss birthday celebration in a church in Tondo, Manila. Bro. Adrian knew that being the top of mind caterer for religious gatherings and priests birthday parties, Bro. Steve has been active in Church activities. Bro. Adrian invited him to come to Feast Manila one Monday night, and there started Bro. Steves regular attendance at the Feast. It has been almost a year ever since. Tamayos at His Service The family of Steve Tamayo is active in Church service. Steve served as a lay minister in the Shrine of Jesus, The Way, The Truth and The Life Parish near SM Mall of Asia for ten years. His wife, Mila Tamayo, is a Mother Butler, his sons Anthony, Benedict, Christopher and Ezekiel are Knights of the Altar, and his daughter Dorothy is an animator. Steve is thankful to God for blessing him with good children who serve God together with him and his wife. This, we can say, is the fruit of Steves long years of hard work and prayer life. But how did the wonder caterer really got to where he is today? Let us go through his almost fairy tale-like story. Beating the Odds Steve was born in Barrio Pugad in Hagonoy, Bulacan. His father was paralyzed leaving his mother to take care of the children-- all 11 of them. No, Steve did not become a rich restaurant owner overnight. His mother ran a small carinderia in the barrio. At 5, nagdadagat na ako. Nanghuhuli ng isda sa gabi, sa umaga naggigiling ako ng bigas tapos namamalengke din at katulong sa pagluluto.

Recipe of a Champion
By KRISTINE MUTUC Photos by CRIS LEGASPI Yes, he went fishing, he ground rice, he went to market, he helped cook the dishes -- all part of his effort to help in his mothers carinderia business. Little did he know, that was already Ingredient 1 of Gods Success Recipe: Passion. Steve, or Baste as he was fondly called, is a born dreamer. Even if money was hard for his family, he knew he was created for something big. Binu-bully ako ng mga kaibigan ko dati kasi pinipilit kong magtapos ng pag-aaral pero wala naman daw akong mararating, he recalls. Yup, playmates bullied him, saying he was too ambitious, telling him theres no way he would succeed. But, Baste simply told them, there are many college graduates who do not have a job, or have not succeed in their career. Maraming nakapagtapos na walang trabaho, he pointed out. Insisting that growing poor is not an option, Steve looked for other means to survive. He stayed with his relatives and offered to clean their house so he could be given allowance. He swept floors and earned his relatives trust. Through sheer determination, he finished his primary and secondary education and then started college at the University of the East. To have money for his school expenses, he worked as a janitor in the school. I cleaned eight floors, including the toilets, he reminisces. From janitor, he served as waiter in a posh hotel. He worked hard and soon the boss promoted him to busboy-- you know, gathering empty dishes from tables and bringing them to the dishwasher. As if working as busboy wasnt tiring enough, he continued to work as a night janitor to earn additional income. Soon, word must have gotten around about this hardworking busboy-janitor because one day, he received an offer to work for a hotel in Saudi Arabia. And promptly, he joined the great exodus of Overseas Filipino Workers to the promised land in the Middle East, earning, for the first time, almighty dollars. Many an OFW stopped at being an employee and spent their money to fulfill dreams-- house and lot, a car, appliances. Not Steve. Aside from his work in the hotel, on his free time, he served as house cleaner for some Arab families. Then he went into business. He bought capiz products in the Philippines and sold them to Arabs and Americans in Saudi. Thats Ingredient 2: Explore your Potential.

6 THE FEAST September 23, 2012

After four years, Steve landed a job as waiter at the Hilton in Kuwait. He earned enough to relax a little and take a vacation in the Philippines. Thats when he met Milagros So, and they fell in love. Mila, a devout Catholic, attended prayer meetings regularly. Thus, Steve felt obliged to escort her to the prayer gatherings. He accompanied her to the venue, then he went out to watch a movie, then picked her up after the show. One day, at Milas insistence, he had to attend a Life in the Spirit Seminar-- and, as Charismatics say, he made a 180-degree turn from his old life to a renewed life. Steve went back to Kuwait a new man. All fired up, he founded an organization he called Filipino Charismatics for Kuwait. Meanwhile, from waiter, he became a pastry shop manager, even as he continued cleaning houses. Then, already assured of a steady income, he married Mila in 1988. Oh, did we mention that he also continued his entrepreneurial adventure selling garments in Kuwait? He opened a clothing shop there and earned a whopping P800,000 profit-- already big money in the 1990s. Alas, his rise to riches suddenly stopped as the Gulf War exploded. Amid the raging war, Steve uttered a prayer: Lord, ibalik mo lang ako sa Pilipinas ng buhay, iiwanan ko lahat ng investments ko sa Kuwait. Kung wala akong faith, baka tumalon na ko from the 17th floor of the hotel, Steve now laughs at the crazy thought. Well, Steves prayer was answered. He got back to the Philippines alive. But in a snap, he lost his shop, his jobs, his money.

Thats Ingredient 3: Pain Instead of crushing him, the pain of failure all the more pushed Steve to move forward. With his impressive work record in Saudi and Kuwait, he landed a job as assistant manager at Heritage Hotel, Manila. Still he continued his entrepreneurial adventure. He stopped cleaning houses and began a buy-and-sell operation. Handkerchiefs, garments, fruits, makeup, umbrellas. Name it, he had probably sold it. Going around with business people, he smelled a new venture. He found out that no one was serving packed lunches for teachers at Centro Escolar University on Mendiola street in Manila. So he delivered them packed lunches at P13.00 each. The teachers must have loved his food because he received requests that he cater food to their parties. At first, he borrowed equipment for the catering service, and then one day, he was already operating his own canteen he named Trabajos Best Fast Food. Then referrals spread like wild fire. Thats the recipe for success now called Tamayos Catering Services and Restaurant. No business is perfect. Steve Tamayo still admits to some challenges his businesses face. But being a man of God, he believes that all his trials can be converted to triumph. See, all the skills I learned now add up to what I needed to run my business!

SUCCESS INGREDIENTS, clockwise from opposite page: Steve Tamayo in front of his catering complex; with Mila and their children Anthony, Benedict, Christopher, Dorothy and Ezekiel; holding his Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2007 trophy; his many, many clients.

Steves Ingredient 4 to his success today is Purpose. You will be successful if youre with the Lord, he says. The recipe is faith plus action. You have to cling to God because businesses have ups and downs. Kung wala kang faith, madali kang susuko. Steves Purpose today is to make use of his resources and blessings to help others. For one, he is maintaining good relationship with his competitors. I treat my competitors as my friends, sometimes teaching them even how to run a catering business and how to give excellent customer service, he beams. Note that the recipe of Steves success is Gods recipe-- which Bro. Bo Sanchez shared with us in his Younique series last August. There are four ingredients: Passion, Potential, Pain, and Purpose. Today, he talks a lot about Ingredient 5: Hindi na kumpleto ang Sunday ko kapag walang Feast, he chuckles. Now, every Feast Sunday, he sits at the Plenary Hall listening to Bro. Bo Sanchez talk about life and faith. Steve smiles and nods. Because as he listens, he knows his life is a product of Gods never-ending grace and love. ONE MORE MIRACLE

By PORTIA HILARIO

Whats in a Name?

Okay, were here, my husband said as he stopped the car right in front of the school gate. I said thank you to my husband, quickly got out of the car, went to the trunk, which my husband had already opened, and got a roller bag where I put stuff I use in school. That day, the bag was extra heavy because aside from my laptop, I had in there clearbooks and papers submitted by my students which I graded at home and now had to return to them. I dragged the bag into the school building and wondered how on earth I would carry it all the way to my classroom on the third floor of the building-- which had no elevator. I whispered a prayer: Lord, if you love me, send someone to carry my bag. Then, as I started to go up the stairs, a boy approached me and said, Mam, may I carry your bag for you? Promptly, I handed him the bag and followed him up to the third floor.

My names Jehiel, Mam, he answered. Hmmm, I knew that name was from the Bible. When I got to the faculty room, I quickly searched in the Internet for the meaning of the name. I found out Jehiel is the name of a number of persons in the Bible. I put the Word file in a folder and filed the folder on my Desktop. After two months, a motorcycle hit the car my son was driving. A passenger of the motorcycle was seriously injured. We paid for his hospital bills. But for days, a question nagged me: Will the guy ever live a normal life again? I got an answer one day while I was working on my computer. I saw the folder where I filed my research on the name Jehiel. I read again the meaning of the name: He lives, or Will live. God has answered my question.

I asked for his name, so I could say a good word for him in the faculty room.
