2.1.2 Uniform and radial fields [QB]Questions 1 Explain what would happen to an electron which found itself at the exact centre of the electric field shown in fig 2.1.6 b. 2 Draw a pair of electrons 8#cm apart. On your diagram, add field lines to show the shape of the electric field produced by these two electrons. Draw in several equipotential lines. 3 A pair of flat, square metal plates are held parallel to each other 10#cm apart. One is connected to earth, and the other is connected to a 2000#V supply. a What would the electrical potential be at a point between the centres of the plates, which is 3#cm from the earthed one? b What difference in effect would there be on electrons placed within the field, one 1#cm from the earthed plate, and the other in the exact midpoint of the field? 4 Why is the electric field in fig 2.1.6 d strongest near the point of the steeple?

5 If fig. 2.1.6 a shows a hydrogen atom, then the separation of the charges would be 5.3 <mult> 10 11#m. If the potential difference from the proton to the electrons position is 27.2#V, what is the strength of the electric field along the line between the two particles? (Assume the field is uniform, although this is a simplification.) [/QB] [ST] Answers 1) Net field = zero, so the net force = zero. 2) [insert aw, as per fig 2.1.6 sketch of two plus charges, except this one should be two minus charges. The lines shape is identical, but all arrows must be reversed.] 3)a) 600 V b) No difference 4) Charge concentrates near points or spikes. 5) 5.13 x 1011 V m-1
