Jamie Doiron EDTECH 541 Lesson Title: In the cloud - documents, storage and more Introduction: Many schools

rely on file servers as network storage for teachers. However, with the advent of web 2.0 technologies and cloud-based storage solutions, there are many cheaper, better options for school systems. As schools begin to use these technologies, many teachers are unfamiliar with them or are not aware that they have access to these tools. Audience/Setting: In-service for teachers Objectives: Learners will be able to: Identify the similarities and differences between LAN storage and cloud-based storage. Create a dropbox account and upload/download files. Log in to google docs on their South Windsor apps account. Create a document, presentation, spreadsheet and drawing. Share files with others. Standards Addressed: AECT Standard 2.3 - Computer-Based Technologies Relative Advantage: Storage solutions on the local area network (LAN) provide backup solutions for teachers and prevent them from losing important documents should their computer die. However, they do not allow for multiple people to edit a document at one time or for anyone to access the files from outside the LAN. Cloud-based storage solutions such as dropbox and google docs dont require school personnel to manage accounts and allow teachers greater flexibility in how they access, use and share their documents. Timeline: 2 hours Materials: Introduction presentation - compares and contrast LAN storage, computer storage, and cloud-based storage. Google Docs videos - series of videos about how to use various elements of google docs (specific to south windsor public schools). Question Form/Survey - to be completed at the conclusion of the lesson and passed in to the instructor Grouping Strategies: Learners will work in groups of 5 or 6 for the introduction activities. Learners will work independently on their own computer to go through the cloud-based services and learn how to use them. Learning Activities:

1. Learners will work in groups of 5 or 6 to identify problems that they have had in the past managing their files on their computer or with their LAN drive. Groups will report out to the larger group some problems that they have encountered in the past. 2. Instructor will go through similarities and differences of the LAN storage and cloud-based storage solutions using introduction presentation. 3. Instructor will introduce dropbox as a file-storage system. Learners will create a dropbox account, download mobile apps if they wish, and practice uploading and downloading files to dropbox. 4. Instructor will introduce google docs as a cloud-based collaborative tool for creating a sharing documents, presentations, spreadsheets and drawings. Learners will go through whichever videos they are interested in and share sample documents with instructor. Assessment: Learners will complete the question form/survey and pass in to the instructor. Adaptations for Learners with Special Needs: Video tutorials will remain available so that learners can re-watch, pause, rewind and go through at their own pace. References: (n.d.). Dropbox.
