2012 Over-Seeding Schedule

Golf Course Closed October 8 and reopens on Monday, October 29. Why Over-Seed?
Each October we close the course for three weeks to accomplish Over-Seeding. Why would we want to close the course for three weeks just as the weather is getting nice and the course is in great shape? The reason is to provide our golfers with a better playing surface and green grass during the cool winter months. If we dont go through the Over-Seed process, our Bermuda base turf becomes yellowish/brown after the first frost of the year. The Bermuda grass actually goes dormant during the cooler winter months. For this reason, we Over-Seed with Rye grass, which is a cool season grass that is able to grow in the winter months. The process begins by cutting the Bermuda grass short, a process called scalping, and reducing the water supply, thus forcing the Bermuda grass into a state of dormancy. We then seed the course with Rye grass and turn the water back on to germinate the Rye seed. Rye grass requires constant moisture until it germinates and matures. October temperatures are ideal for this process and keeps the Bermuda grass dormant.

Player Development Clinic

As part of our Get Golf Ready program, we will be offering a Player Development Clinic on Monday, October 29 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. We will have both full swing and short game stations set up with emphasis on the basic fundamentals of each area. This clinic is limited to the first 20 participants and the cost if just $20 per person. Please sign up in the Golf Shop.

Sun City Festival Citizens Patrol Celebrate 1st Anniversay
Fall Course Enrollment Has Begun - Register Today!
Sign up at the Member Services Desk in the Sage Center for Fall Courses through the ASU Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. The courses are open to all Sun City Festival residents. The cost of registration is $8.00 per course session. A Student Discount Package is available, and allows residents who take at least four (4) fee-paid courses to receive a 20% discount on your total tuition. This is a great savings on multi-session courses. This fall, we have many new community resident instructors and a variety of courses. Many popular courses return along with several new courses, such as An Introduction on iPads & iPhones, one on Saudi Arabia, and a few dedicated to the upcoming Presidential Election. Dont miss out on this amazing opportunity to broaden your knowledge, meet new people, and become an OLLI Member to take advantage of discounts and benefits. Register today at the Member Services Desk! With the support and encouragement of the Buckeye Police Department, Dana Kovach and Ron Bryan began the Festival Citizens Patrol slightly over a year ago. The purpose of the Citizens Patrol is to provide another set of eyes for the Police Department. Patrol members are an integral component of the Police Department community policing effort, as they observe and report during each patrol. The success of the Festival Citizens Patrol, which was a pilot project, has resulted in Citizens Patrols being formed in Verrado and the Sundance areas. The Festival Citizens Patrol currently has 24 members who have contributed more than 800 hours during 2012 to patrolling our community. In April, the Police Department used RICO (drug interdiction) funds to purchase a new Ford Escape patrol vehicle for our use, and the HOA provided a GPS unit for the vehicle. In addition to patrol activities, Citizens Patrol members also assist other Buckeye events like the Air Fair, respond to calls to assist with traffic control, and attend monthly training sessions. The 1st Anniversary recognition will occur on October 18. Residents interested in contributing their time to enhance the general safety of our community are encouraged to contact Ron Bryan for more information.

enjoyed meeting so many new friends that share common interests. After retiring from teaching nursing at Northern Illinois University Judi worked at Arrowhead Hospital until September 2010, when work began to interfere with the many activities at Festival. She is a member of the Lady Putters and the Players Club, President of the Paper Crafts and More Club, Secretary of the Pickleball Club and Secretary of the Crafty Scrappers. They have a daughter Lindsay and a son Christopher.

Monday

Stan and Judi moved to Sun City Festival in April 2007 after Stan retired from York International HVAC Corporation as a Territory Manager where he worked for 28 years. Stan and Judi were both interested in seeking a warmer climate for their retirement years after living in the Chicagoland area all of their lives and enduring some incredibly snowy winters. While visiting their son stationed at 29 Palms Marine Corps Base, they traveled to Phoenix and began thinking about moving out West. After looking in Las Vegas and then Phoenix, Stan and Judi settled on Sun City Festival. It was difficult to imagine what Festival would eventually become with so much building taking place at the time. They have truly enjoyed their decision and have

Break The Old Habits

We all know exercise is good for us. It helps control blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and body by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S., weight. Exercise makes your heart stronger, more efFitness/Wellness Director ficient, and maintains strength and bone density. Its also a great prevention of disease. As a result, we faithfully and habitually take our daily walk, spend time on the treadmill, and/ or lift weights. However, you may not be receiving the MAXIMUM benefits for all your efforts. Our bodies are stimulus-response mechanisms. The heart, muscles and all the other body parts respond (get stronger and more fit) to the stimulus of exercise. This response (fitness) is exactly the amount needed no more, no less. The results of our consistent, daily exercise are limited when we do the same exercise, for the same amount of time, at the same effort without variation. The body only benefits and responds so much to the same stimulus. By providing different stimulus, changing exercise habits can lead to additional fitness gains and benefits. The same exercise over and over can also lead to boredom and/or repetitive stress injuries. Boredom is one of the most reported barriers to exercise and makes complete sense when we do the same exercise day after day. Differing exercise or changing your routine, substantially increases the likelihood of sticking with a consistent exercise program. Repetitive movements done frequently and without adequate recovery can lead to overuse injuries such as tendonitis, pulled muscles, and bursitis. These types of problems can limit, or totally prevent, exercise performance. Exercise variation prevents one particular part of the body from repeatedly undergoing the same movement or experiencing the same stress. So, instead of five days per week at the same speed for the same amount of time on the treadmill, try ten or fifteen minutes on the stationary bike or the elliptical trainer. Instead of the same weight machine exercises for the shoulder or back muscles, try using free weight equipment or challenge yourself with body-weight exercises. Consistent change of exercise keeps the body challenged, minimizes risk of repetitive stress injuries, and prevents boredom.
