Course Introduction
Introduction to Computers (MIS 105) provides you with an understanding of Information Technology and its application in a wide range of disciplines focusing primarily on business processes. This is done by having a deeper understanding of the functionalities of a computer system- interaction between hardware, software, and the user. In this course you will get the technology applications and management skills that will be valuable throughout your career.
Course Objectives
The course aims to introduce the participants to the Information Technology (IT) as it applies to a Business. In a ever changing technological world, it provides a foundation towards the technology and explains how it evolved as well as how it is expected to evolve. It allows an understanding and appreciation of the contribution of IT to the modern businesses to develop strategies for competitive advantage leveraging the IT. Different types and sizes of computers are explained with their applications in the businesses world. Additionally, information about ethics, security, the internet, word processing, desktop publishing, networking, database management systems, and programming and languages. The course will provide a good understanding of MS Windows OS and MS Office applications including Word, Excel, and Power Point.
Teaching Approach
The course contains readings from textbooks, journals and various web-sources, class lectures, individual and group assignments, online quizzes and a term project. The group assignments and the term project will require group work including meetings, conducting research at various organizations, preparing reports and delivering presentation. A textbook is assigned for the course. The lectures will be delivered in English using PowerPoint slides (from the textbook and other sources). A course website is going to be used to provide participant with relevant information including course policies, guidelines, online quizzes and the related.
