Funeral Mass His Excellency, Bishop Ignatius Wang Celebrant Holy Name of Jesus Parish

Dear Friends and Family: Today we gather to celebrate the Funeral Mass of our husband, father, brother, and friend Andrew Bau. We welcome you and are so honored that you are sharing this time with us. We gather in his memory. In the Roman Catholic expression of the Christian faith, which enriched Andrews life to the end, we also gather to remember another man who lived among us, Jesus. The night before he died, Jesus asked that as often as we gather in his memory, we should break bread and pour wine. So we will do that today in a ritual that is centuries old. Christians recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread, and we welcome his presence. Today, we will also listen to the story of Lazarus, bound by sin and death, but Jesus freed him from his bondage. By Jesus own death, and his rising to new life, he conquered sin, so that those who die with him might live forever. And so it is with our dear Andrew. This is what we celebrate today, and we welcome you to follow along the order of service in this pamphlet. We invite you to sing the songs, with us, and you may also respond throughout the service by reading the parts in bold. Following the Mass, those who wish may join us in the procession to the Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, and all are welcome to a reception at Moonstar Buffet nearby. Directions are inside the back cover. We wish to express our sincere gratitude for the presence of all of you, and especially for His Excellency, Bishop Ignatius Wang, who presides over this service, as well as for the lectors, servers, pianist, and soloist. Thank you. We are so grateful for your presence today!

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING ISAIAH 25:6A [Read by daughter-in-law Katharine Bau Hsiao] Reader: A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. On this mountain the Lord of hosts will provide for all peoples. On this mountain he will destroy the veil that veils all peoples, the web that is woven over all nations; he will destroy death forever. The Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces; the reproach of his people he will remove from the whole earth; for the Lord has spoken. On that day it will be said: Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us! This is the Lord for whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us! The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. RESPONSORIAL PSALM [Read by daughter Angela Bau] All: The Lord is my light and my salvation. Reader: The Lord is my light and my help; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life before whom shall I shrink? All: The Lord is my light and my salvation. Reader: There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long, to live in the house of the Lord, all the days of my life, to savor the sweetness of the Lord, to behold his temple. All: The Lord is my light and my salvation. Reader: O Lord, hear my voice when I call; have mercy and answer. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek; hide your face. All: The Lord is my light and my salvation.

things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, not any other creatures will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. ALLELLUIA [All stand] GOSPEL SUNG JOHN 11:32-45

Bishop Wang: The Lord be with you. All: And with your sprit. Bishop Wang: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John All: Glory to you, O Lord. When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he became perturbed and deeply troubled, and said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Sir, come and see. And Jesus wept. So the Jews said, See how he loved him. But some of them said, Could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have done something so that this man would not have died? So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay across it. Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the dead mans sister, said to him, Lord, by now there will be a stench; he has been dead for four days. Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God? So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me. And when he had said this, he cried out in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! The dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, Untie him and let him go. Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what he had done began to believe in him. The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. HOMILY [All be seated] PROFESSION OF FAITH All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator

SECOND READING ROMANS 8:37-39 [Read in Mandarinby Eucharistic Minister Valerie Toy and in English by son in law John Bare] Reader: A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans. What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these

of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL [All stand] Bishop Wang: For Andrew, let us pray to our Lord Jesus Christ, who said, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me shall live even in death and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. [Read by family friend Marguerite Fa-Kaji] Reader: Lord, you consoled Martha and Mary in their distress; draw near to us who mourn for Andrew and dry the tears of those who weep. We pray to the Lord All: Lord hear our prayer. Reader: You wept at the grave of Lazarus, your friend; comfort us in our sorrow. We pray to the Lord All: Lord hear our prayer. Reader: You raised the dead to life; give to our brother Andrew eternal life. We pray to the Lord All: Lord hear our prayer. Reader: Our brother Andrew was washed in baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit; give him fellowship with all your saints. We pray to the Lord All: Lord hear our prayer. Reader: He was nourished with your body and blood; grant him a place at your table in your heavenly Kingdom. We pray to the Lord All: Lord hear our prayer. Reader: Comfort us in our sorrow at the death of Andrew, let our faith be our consolation, and eternal life our hope. We pray to the Lord All: Lord hear our prayer. Bishop Wang: God of holiness and power, accept our prayers on behalf of your servant Andrew; do not

count his deeds against him, for in his heart he desired to do your will. As his faith united him to your people on earth, so may your mercy join him to the angels in heaven. We ask this through Christ our Lord. All: Amen. LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

Bishop Wang: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. All: Blessed be God forever. Bishop Wang: By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink. All: Blessed be God forever. Bishop Wang: Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. [All stand] All: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. Bishop Wang will say the Prayer over the Offerings All: Amen. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Bishop Wang: The Lord be with you. All: And with your spirit. Bishop Wang: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord. Bishop Wang: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right and just.

Bishop Wang: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father of mercies and faithful God. For you have given us Jesus Christ, your Son, as our Lord and Redeemer. He always showed compassion for children and for the poor, for the sick and for sinners, and he became a neighbor to the oppressed and the afflicted. By word and deed he announced to the world that you are our Father and that you care for all your sons and daughters. And so, with all the Angels and Saints, we exalt and bless your name and sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim: All: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Bishop Wang: You are indeed Holy and to be glorified, O God, who love the human race and who always walk with us on the journey of life. Blessed indeed is your Son, present in our midst when we are gathered by his love and when, as once for the disciples, so now for us, he opens the Scriptures and breaks the bread. Therefore, Father most merciful, we ask that you send forth your Holy Spirit to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the day before he was to suffer, on the night of the Last Supper, he took bread and said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying: TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, gave you thanks and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying: TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME. The mystery of faith. All: Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free. Bishop Wang: Therefore, holy Father, as we celebrate the memorial of Christ your Son, our Savior, whom you led through his Passion and Death on the Cross to the glory of the Resurrection, and whom you have seated at your right hand, we proclaim the work of your love until he comes again

and we offer you the Bread of life and the Chalice of blessing. Look with favor on the oblation of your Church, in which we show forth the paschal Sacrifice of Christ that has been handed on to us, and grant that, by the power of the Spirit of your love, we may be counted now and until the day of eternity among the members of your Son, in whose Body and Blood we have communion. Bring your Church, O Lord, to perfect faith and charity, together with Benedict our Pope and George our Bishop, with all Bishops, Priests and Deacons, and the entire people you have made your own. Open our eyes to the needs of our brothers and sisters; inspire in us words and actions to comfort those who labor and are burdened. Make us serve them truly, after the example of Christ and at his command. And may your Church stand as a living witness to truth and freedom, to peace and justice, that all people may be raised up to a new hope. Remember your servant Andrew whom you have called from this world to yourself. Grant that he who was united with your Son in a death like his, may also be one with him in his Resurrection, when from the earth he will raise up in the flesh those who have died, and transform our lowly body after the pattern of his own glorious body. To our departed brothers and sisters, too, and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy for ever the fullness of your glory, when you will wipe away every tear from our eyes. For seeing you, our God, as you are, we shall be like you for all the ages and praise you without end, through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good. Grant also to us, when our earthly pilgrimage is done, that we may come to an eternal dwelling place and live with you for ever; there, in communion with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the Apostles and Martyrs, and with all the Saints, we shall praise and exalt you through Jesus Christ, your Son. Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever. All: Amen. COMMUNION RITE Bishop Wang: At the Saviors command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say: All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Bishop Wang: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every

evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. All: For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Bishop Wang: Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you; look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign for ever and ever. All: Amen. Bishop Wang: The peace of the Lord be with you always. All: And with your spirit. Bishop Wang: Let us offer each other the sign of peace. [And all offer one another a sign, in keeping with local customs, that expresses peace, communion, and charity.] All: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace. Bishop Wang: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. COMMUNION SONG MEDITATION SONG YOU ARE NEAR (#443) BE NOT AFRAID (#428)

Bishop Wang: May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. All: Amen. Bishop Wang: Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. All: Thanks be to God. RECESSIONAL SONG ON EAGLES WINGS (#435)

Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping, that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace. Lord, now let your servant go in peace; your word has been fulfilled. Mine own eyes have seen the salvation which you have prepared in the sight of all the peoples; a light to reveal you to the nations, and the glory of your people, Israel. Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now and shall be forever. Guide us waking O Lord, and guard us sleeping, That awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.
