HOMEWORK 8
DUE BEFORE CLASS ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2011

Read Section 11.8 on Lagrange Multipliers. Hopefully you will find this an important new way
of calculating maxima and minima. Begin reading Chapter 12 (!!), with Section 12.1 and 12.2.
We learned how to take derivatives of multi-variable functions, now were moving on to
integrals of those functions.

Section 11.8
1. The figure shows a contour map of f and a curve with equation 8 ) , ( = y x g . Estimate the
maximum and minimum values of f subject to the constraint that 8 ) , ( = y x g . Explain your
reasoning.
2. Use Lagrange multipliers to find the maximum and minimum values of the function,

3. Find the extreme values of 5 4 3 2 ) , (

+ = x y x y x f on the region described by the
inequality, 16

s + y x .
4. Use Lagrange multipliers to prove that the triangle with maximum area that has a given
perimeter, p, is equilateral. Use the following (Herons) formula for the area:
) )( )( ( z s y s x s s A = , where 2 p s = and x, y, z are the lengths of the sides of the
triangle.
5. Use Lagrange multipliers to find the point on the plane 4 = + z y x that is closest to the
point (1,2,3) (this is problem 10 from last week now solve this problem using Lagrange
multipliers).
6. The plane 2 2 = + + z y x intersects the paraboloid
2 2
y x z + = in an ellipse. Find the points
on this ellipse that are nearest to and farthest from the origins.
