Alt-J are a new band within the alternative/indie genre which has appealed to us through its alternative and

weird conventions they use throughout their songs, especially our chosen song Breezeblocks . This gives us various opportunities and possi bilities to create an original, unique music video. Narrative Our Narrative consists of a girl who is first assumed as innocent yet later on i n the video becomes clear that she is defiantly not. With a montage of clips we see a happy teenage girl, walking through a variety of locations (which we will talk about later on in the treatment). From the use of shadows within the clips, the audience begin to guess that she isn't alone, yet when the song hits its pe ak, the clips already witnessed by the audience, will rewind showing that the cl ips aren't what the audience first imagined. The whole story of the music video is based on a modern day witch hunt, ending with the "innocent" character burnin g on a stake, yet in our video she stands on the breeze block with a match falli ng to the ground. The start of the video shows the girl standing on a breeze blo ck so revisiting this clip at the end but showing the fire, links all the clips together, finally understanding the narrative of the music video. Variety of locations Location is a major part of our music video due to the variety of editing techni ques and effects we wish to use throughout. As the narrative is a modern day Wit ch hunt we do not wish to make it cliche causing it to be dark and gloomy throug hout, we wish to, instead, use a variety of different locations in ranges of day and night, light as well as including different styles of weather. This include s a forested area with tall trees and sunlight shining between them, a dark ware house for where the 'burning at the stake' occurs, a busy road, the dark room wh ere lipsncing will happen and a small river/lake within the forest. Spilt Persona to the Character As explained earlier in the narrative, we hope to create a protagonist within ou r music video to give the narrative an over all better flow. To give this charac ter a more interesting story we thought we would split her into two completely d ifferent characters, thus enhancing the psychological side of our narrative. We are thinking of doing this by changing the sweet innocent girl that we were firs t introduced to, into a dark and twisted character when we start to reverse the footage back to the opening clip. Techniques Apart from all the basic techniques of shots and movements, we hope to include a variety of different techniques within our music video, ranging from simple col our alterations to carefully rewinding each individual clip to portray a differe nt side to the protagonist. Whilst watching other music videos which includes re winding of clips and trying out some simple rewinding of our own, it has become increasingly clear the effort needed in making a clip look good backwards then f irst assumed, making it quite a tricky technique to master. Symbolic Images There are a couple of key pieces of imagery we hope to include throughout our mu sic video, the first being a Breeze block. This not only the original name of th e song we plan to be using in our video, but it also offers great opportunities for shooting sections of our music video, also allowing light to pass through th e breeze block can create an interesting technique. We also hope to include a sp ecific symbol of a star within a circle, this will thus represent the ideology o f a witch like hunt which we hope to be hinting at through the entire video. Costume Due to us giving our main character a split persona, it offers us more possibili ties to play around with her costume. We will be contrasting the first represent

ation of this character with the last representation of her, and this will be ma inly done throughout not only her behaviour, but specifically her costume. We pl an on her wearing cute flowery dresses to begin with then this changing to dark clothing, maybe have her just wear a black baggy jumper to not only show her dar k side but could also show her loss of innocence. Audience We are aiming to cause shock to our audience on the first viewing of our music v ideo which we hope to achieve through making the audience feel a connection with the character due to her seeming innocent, yet when the clips rewind exposing h er dark side this will immediately shock the audience therefore creating a drama tic effect. We feel this music video is suitable for young adults/teenagers yet as the nature of the song and the audience of the alternative genre is ultimatel y teenagers, it is clear what kind of audience would want to view such a music v ideo.
