Keynote Speakers
Dr Daniel Ansari is an Associate
Professor and Canada Research Chair in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology at Western University, Ontario, Canada. Daniel studied Psychology at the University of Sussex, an MSc in Neuroscience at Oxford and his PhD at UCL. Daniels research focuses on gaining a better understanding of how children develop numerical and mathematical competencies. Disorders of the numerate brain: Developmental Dyscalculia & Mathematics Anxiety I will present evidence from both behavioral and brain imaging studies that both developmental dyscalculia and mathematics anxiety disorders are associated with difficulties in basic number processing. I conclude with a discussion of the implications of recent research on developmental dyscalculia and mathematics anxiety for educational diagnosis and remediation.
Dr Derek Haylock is an
Education Consultant, Author, and Senior Fellow of the University of East Anglia. Derek is internationally renowned for his writing and research in mathematics education, he has taught mathematics to all ages and established himself as a highly respected specialist in the primary field.
Using learners errors and misconceptions in teaching mathematics I will share examples of how teachers analyse learners mathematical misconceptions, errors and procedural mistakes to inform their teaching. I argue that errors are welcome because they can promote cognitive conflict and deeper understanding. I will also discuss childrens risk-taking in problem-solving.
Primary Maths Adviser for Babcock LDP based in Devon. Ruth taught for many years in primary schools in Devon and Canada before joining the advisory service where she has led and developed a variety of research projects and co-authored a number of books.
Missing links: Barriers to understanding early mathematics Making connections is at the heart of mathematics but for some children maths is experienced as discrete, isolated incidents. Starting from early experiences of counting, I will explore missing links and how to support children in developing the links, considering the place of contexts, language, mathematical images and symbols.

Feedback from the 2012 conference Thank you for organising such an excellent and challenging conference. It has had a positive impact on my own practice. I really appreciated the combination of theory, research and practical teaching approaches. I found each presentation provided something different that I could take away with me and feed back to my colleagues. It answered a number of questions I had about dyscalculia and maths difficulties. Learning Works provides high quality training, CPD, conferences, publications and consultancy services. For more details please visit: www.learning-works.org.uk
We wish to thank Numicon for their support of this conference.
