Practice Lab # 3: Relationship between mass and acceleration Objective: Students will obtain a relationship between mass and

acceleration, of an object on which will be apply a constant force, using experimental data, analytical and graphic methods. Theoretical analysis: When a force acts on an object, it affects its motion producing acceleration in the direction of the applied force. That acceleration is inversely proportional to the objects mass.

Material: - flotation device Air pump Chronometer Pulley, ruler, different weights Rails with turn-on switch Photocells

Procedures: 12345Install the flotation device making sure it is level. Install the pulley, center it and tie a thread to the weights. Install the photocells over the metal ruler and connect it to the chronometer. The space between the photocells should be 40cm apart Make sure the clock marks zero, turn-on the airpump and let the flotation device slide and take a lecture of the time as it passes in front of the 2nd photocell. 6- Take the mass and repeat at least twice the experiment. 7- Repeat with different mass at least 2 times also.

LAB REPORT NAME: ________________________ List # _______ Group:____ ________________________________ _______ ________________________________ _______ ________________________________ _______ ________________________________ _______ 1- Complete the table with the information by the experiment Mass 1 2 3 4 5 6 Distance time time2 a =2s/t2 Force (dynes)

2- Make a graph acceleration versus mass ( mass on x-axis) 3- Use the graph to answer the following question: What type of graph do you get? 4- What kind of relationship can be determined between the acceleration and the mass? Write an algebraic expression. 5- Can you find proportionality constant? What is its magnitude? 6- Use the answers of the questions 4 and 5 and write the resultant equation. 7- Compare the results and if there are any differences give the probable causes.
