7. The Needles Park


Home of the famous coloured sand cliffs. Ride the chairlift to the beach to see the Needles Rocks and Lighthouse. Make your own unique Alum Bay coloured sand souvenir. This extraordinary collection of historic towns and villages would be a challenging and stimulating subject for an essay. The landscape is littered with the remains of Roman and Norman castles and there are countless museums, exhibitions and specially designed sites that bring learning to life in an unforgettable way. Groups join Geoffrey Chaucer and his colourful characters on their journey from London to the Shrine of St Thomas Beckett in Canterbury and along the way listen to five of Chaucers wonderful Canterbury Tales. School groups can tour the castle, explore the parklands, gardens, yew maze and underground shell grotto plus let off steam in the Knights Realm Playground. Bespoke 30 to 40 minute afternoon talks are now available on a variety of curriculum subjects as well as a choice of eight interactive themed workshops, delivered by a trained education co-ordinator and focused on requirements of the UK National Curriculum. The workshops cover a range of subjects including English, History, Art & Design, Science, Citizenship and Geography.

This fascinating Museum tells the story of the Bank since its foundation in 1694 to its role in todays economy. Interactive displays, audio-visuals, games and artefacts help explain its many and varied roles. Theres even a genuine gold bar which may be handled! The Bank of England Museums education programme is designed to support aspects of teaching in several curriculum areas for key stages 2 and above. Close to sandy beaches, The Norfolk Broads, or a trip to see the seals at Blakeney and many other interesting sites. Every year we have around 12 weeks of school visits, many of whom return year after year, we would be happy to assist in providing local knowledge to new schools for activities either led by the local Field Study centre, or, for independent trips.

Arriving at Treasure Park you will find a unique park that offers entertainment for the whole family. Built on the grounds of Tolgus Tin Mine and home to the Redruth Town Museum, the park is a blaze with floral colour edging a twisting stream that winds past waterwheels and grass sculpted embankments. Treasure Park also offers an array of family activities to suit all ages. Try your hand at Panning for gold, make your own Cornish teddy at our Bear Works, create and paint your own pottery pieces or dig for treasures at the gem scoop. There are many things to see and do that make this a memorable visit to Treasure Park.

Greenway Ferry offers a variety of water based educational trips for schools and groups. Topics which are covered on our trips are history, geography, wildlife, environment and leisure and tourism. Taking the ferry between Torquay and Brixham is a short journey across the bay lasting 30 minutes. Once in Brixham there is plenty to do, visit the museum or Golden Hind before jumping aboard for the return journey. History buffs will delight in the WW2 Grand Heritage Voyage or Premier Gold Cruise sailing onto Blackpool Sands where Exercise Tiger took place - the full scale rehearsal for the D-Day landings. For nearly 300 years a lighthouse has stood on Portland Bill to guide vessels heading for Portland and Weymouth and acting as a waymark for vessels navigating in the English Channel. A red sector light warns mariners of the hazardous Shambles Bank lying three miles offshore. Explore nine large caverns of this partly natural cave system and ancient iron ore mine. Deep mining finished here at the end of the Second World War, but ochre is still mined here for artists pigment. For 175 years Nash Point lighthouse, designed by James Walker, the Engineer-in-Chief to Trinity House, has been keeping the mariner safe of Nash Sands, the sandbanks off the point at the entrance to the Bristol Channel. Nash Point was the last manned lighthouse in Wales. The lighthouse keepers left on 5 August 1998. Find out about the history of this striking Lighthouse and life as a Lighthouse Keeper whilst taking in the panoramic views of the Bristol Channel from the top of the tower.

Bubonic Plague! Learn all about the Bubonic Plague outbreak of 1665/6 in Eyam. The villagers imposed a voluntary quarantine, and over a third of the population died. There is a wealth of information about the plague, locally and worldwide, with tragic stories of individual families. The recovery follows, with the growth of local industries. There is a fine display of local fossils and minerals.

The Chestnut Centre is set in 50 acres of the beautiful Peak District National Park. The 3/4 mile nature trail will lead you through the deer meadow, home to both Fallow and Manchurian Sika deer. Cross over the stream and meet our Giant otters Manoki and Panambi with their family. Watch the antics of the North American River Otter and the small Asian Short Claw otter whilst our native shy Eurasian otter can be seen sleeping in the holt. Further along the trail meet the foxes, the endangered Scottish wildcat, polecats as well as 17 species of owls. Our knowledgeable animal keepers are on hand to answer your questions. Treak Cliff Cavern is an underground wonderland of stalactites, stalagmites, rocks, minerals and fossils including the rare Blue John Stone. The cavern is an excellent example of typical underground limestone scenery. Guided tours are adapted to suit different age groups, abilities and interests. Black Country Living Museum is a world-class open air attraction which brings to life the rich history of the Black Country in an unforgettable 'living' experience. Anybodys Barn is a registered charity (Charity Number 326855) whose aim is to make accommodation available (and run art courses) for groups on limited funding. White Scar Cave enjoys a magnificent setting in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Young visitors are introduced to the science and wonder of the subterranean world. The cave walk covers one mile with guide, ensuring that learning is combined with exercise! There are underground streams and waterfalls, flowstone, prehistoric mud pools, and the huge Battlefield Cavern adorned with thousands of stalactites. The Forbidden Corner is one of Englands most recent follies, recently voted The best European folly of the 20th century by The Folly Fellowship and also voted the best family day out in 2009 by the Little Chef group comprising of; A unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises created in a four-acre garden in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, in the Yorkshire Dales, offers spectacular waterfall and woodland scenery and is noted for its geological interest. The Falls Refreshment Centre is located half way round the trail at Beezley Farm. The Falls Cafe, toilet facilities, car and coach parking at the start of the trail. Childrens activity sheet available.

We use our three museums (Prison & Police Museum, Courthouse Museum, Workhouse Museum & Garden) and collections flexibly to provide sessions for all ages across the themes of Victorian Life, the Workhouse and Crime and Punishment. We pride ourselves on tailoring visits to each schools needs and providing a unique experience, only available outside the classroom. A lighthouse was first built on the Flamborough Headland in 1669 but was never lit. The current lighthouse was built in 1806 and acts as a waypoint for deep sea vessels and coastal traffic as well as marking the Flamborough Headland for vessels heading for the ports of Scarborough and Bridlington.

Our dedicated team of volunteers provide a range of managed workshops and rural-craft demonstrations relating to Victorian Life, Rural Life & WWII Wartime themes. The museum is housed in a majestic Grade II* Georgian Country House and has a vast collection of 1000s of objects wonderfully displayed in 27 period rooms, shops and galleries.
