ALL THERMAL IMAGERS NEED A LITTLE TLC All Thermal Imagers are complex electronic equipment. This equipment can be reliable and can function for many years under normal conditions. However, it is important to remember that Thermal Imagers are not like many other tools in the fire service. Reasonable care must be taken when using a thermal imager. Fire service often evaluates equipment and forms opinions based on how difficult it is to break the equipment. Just for the record, YOU CAN BREAK this piece of equipment. The VISION3 Thermal Imaging System is ruggedized and waterproofed for fire service, however, there are limits. Please use this equipment as it was intended - to be your extra eyes specially calibrated for the fireground. To see through smoke, find fire, and save the lives of both firefighters and the public. Care for this equipment as if it were your own eyes.

WARNINGS AND EXCLUSIONS

Before using the VISION3 Thermal Imaging System, users must understand the following: 1. All users must be thoroughly familiar with the VISION3s proper operation and limitations prior to use. Improper use of the equipment in a hazardous atmosphere could result in serious injury or death. 2. The VISION3 Thermal Imaging System is not life support equipment. It is a navigational tool, and under certain conditions, will provide a special visual image of immediate surroundings in smoke filled, fog covered or completely dark environments.
Copyright 1999 International Safety Instruments, Inc.

3. The service life of the VISION3 Thermal Imaging System depends in part on the environmental conditions in which the equipment is used. Under heavy usage, or under extreme environmental conditions, the service life of the equipment may be reduced. 4. The VISION3 Thermal Imaging System is complex electronic equipment and just like any other machinery, electronic systems are subject to potential failures. If a failure occurs, the user will no longer have access to the special visual image provided by the VISION3 system and will be exposed to the same conditions as personnel operating without the equipment. Therefore, tactical usage of this equipment must not deviate from standard operating procedures used by personnel who do not have the benefit of the equipment. Failure to follow standard operating procedures in a hazardous atmosphere may result in disorientation, injury or death should an equipment failure occur. 5. The VISION3 Thermal Imaging System must be serviced only by authorized personnel. Under no circumstances should any attempt be made to service the equipment by unauthorized personnel. The VISION3 operates under high voltage. The cover or casing of the VISION3 should never be removed by unauthorized personnel. 6. VISION3 Thermal Imaging System must only be used by personnel familiar with the usage and limitations of the System. That includes usage in simulated fire conditions such as controlled live burn situations. Usage of the VISION3 Thermal Imaging System by unauthorized, unfamiliar or untrained users may result in injury or death. 7. Exposure to high temperature environments for an extended period of time may result in degradation or loss of the thermal image. Be sure not to overexpose or heat saturate the equipment. If possible degradation of the thermal image is observed, remove the equipment from the high heat environment and allow for a cool down period until the thermal image is restored to normal. Failure to provide adequate cool-down may result in system failure which could result in injury or death.

Copyright 1999 International Safety Instruments, Inc.

8. Repeated exposure to high temperature environments without adequate cool-down periods may result in degradation or loss of the thermal image. Be sure to allow adequate cool-down periods between high temperature exposures. 9. Users should be conscious of the battery life. It is advisable to only enter a hazardous environment when a full battery charge is indicated on the battery charge indicator. Entering a hazardous environment with inadequate battery charge could result in system failure contributing to injury or death. 10. Although the VISION3 Thermal Imager is IP67 waterproof, the system will not provide thermal images underwater. 11. The VISION3 Thermal Imager will not provide images through glass, water, or shiny objects. These surfaces act like mirrors to the system. 12. The VISION3 Thermal Imaging System does not improve impaired vision. Users with impaired vision should continue to use ophthalmic devices while using the system. 13. The VISION3 Thermal Imaging System is not rated as Intrinsically Safe. Do not use the system in environments or atmospheres where static or a spark will cause explosion. 14. Electromagnetic radiation (radio transmissions) may cause interference to the VISION3 Thermal Imaging System. 15. Never point the ISI VISION3 directly to the sun. Damage to the detector may occur. WARNING: Batteries supplied with the VISION3 Thermal Imaging System have been selected based on specific performance values. Replacement batteries must exactly match the ratings and configuration of those originally supplied with the equipment. DANGER: Firefighting and Emergency Operations are ultra hazardous and could result in injury of death. No level of training or preparedness will ensure your safety in every situation. Never use this equipment without completely reading the instructions and being extremely familiar with the usage, characteristics, and limitations of this equipment in fireground or other hostile environments. It is suggested that this level of preparedness include simulated testing in a controlled live burn exercise before deploying the equipment in actual emergency situations. It is important to always test the equipment to ensure that equipment is functional before entering a hostile environment. Failure to properly close and seal the battery compartment compromises the systems waterproofing. If the battery or its contacts get wet, it may cause the VISION3 Thermal Imaging System to stop working and/or cause system damage, which may result in injury or death. Never use the VISION3 Thermal Imaging System as the sole source of navigation. If system failure occurs, you may become disoriented or lost in a hostile environment which could result in injury or death. The VISION3 Thermal Imaging System provides a thermal image in dark or smoky conditions. The user could become distracted from safety precautions and protocols, leaving a partner or the communications range of the incident command structure which could result in injury or death. Failure to exit a hostile environment immediately on observation of the low battery warning may result in system failure in a hostile environment which could result in injury or death. The ISI VISION3 Thermal Imaging System has been ruggedized as much as possible for fire service. However, it is a highly complex piece of electronic equipment and should be treated as such. The VISION3 will withstand the normal bumps that occur in fire service; however, care must be taken not to drop the unit as it may be damaged or the focus may be altered. The VISION3 Thermal Imaging System is an electronic system that will fail if it is abused. Always be sure that the lenses as well as the view finder are always coated with anti-fog material. 6

3.9 Low Battery Indicator 3.9.1 When the VISION3 is NOT equipped with the optional annotation electronics, the battery indicator is a visible LED light to the left of the monitor display. When on full charge, the LED is green. As the charge drops to half, the LED turns yellow. And as the charge drops below 1/4, the LED turns red. When there is only approx. 5 minutes left, the LED blinks red. The exact time remaining depends on the battery type, temperature, and history of use. 3.9.2 When the VISION3 is equipped with the optional annotation electronics, an additional battery level indicator is an on-screen battery shaped icon. The inside of the icon changes from solid to transparent, while the outline of the icon remains intact, as the battery charge reduces. When the battery is at approx. 5 minutes remaining, the words low battery flash at the bottom left side of the screen. Additionally, when the optional annotation electronics are installed, the battery level can be transmitted to a remote monitor location using the Video-Link Plus wireless transmission system. 3.9.3 All ISI VISION3 units are fitted with a battery protection circuit, which prevents excessive discharge of rechargeable battery packs. Its function is to interrupt power to the camera when the battery voltage falls below a predetermined voltage. The circuit resets automatically on replacement of the battery pack.

INTERNAL MIX ADJUSTMENTS

CAUTION: Certain functions on the VISION3 are user adjustable. We recommend that only specific authorized personnel attempt to change the cameras internal adjustments. Incorrectly adjusting these parameters could seriously degrade the image quality of the camera. The adjustment potentiometers are located in the battery compartment. To access these adjustments:

1. Place the camera upside down on a clean non abrasive surface. 2. Open the battery compartment 3. Remove the battery 4. Unscrew the protective screws that cover the adjustment holes. 5. Place the battery on the battery contacts as shown. 6. Secure the battery to the battery contacts using tape or large rubber band. Note: The battery must be in place before any adjustments can be made. 7. Turn the unit on by depressing the red power button.

14

Copyright 1999 International Safety Instruments, Inc.

8. Take care to make sure the VIDEOMIX button is not depressed. 9. Wait for the camera to self check and provide a thermal image on the internal viewfinder. 10. You can adjust these settings using a small, flat blade screwdriver for all adjustments except the date/time stamp. Date/time must be adjusted using a small pointer to depress the adjustment buttons. There are five settings that can be field maintained: Note: Refer to label in battery compartment for designation of adjustment pots. A gentle touch is necessary when using adjustment potentiometers. Do not overadjust or use force. 6.1 BRIGHTNESS: This adjustment controls the brightness of the viewfinder. Any adjustments made will not affect the remote monitor. Turning the adjustment counter clockwise reduces brightness, while turning it clockwise adds brightness. The optimum brightness level is that which is most pleasing to your eye and allows the greatest amount of detail in the thermal image.

6.2 VIDEO / THERMAL VIDEOMIX ADJUSTMENT This adjustment controls the amount of video versus thermal mixture when the VIDEOMIX button is depressed. Turning the adjustment counterclockwise adds more thermal and reduces video, while turning it clockwise adds more video than thermal. The correct mixture is one that allows users to see a clear video picture, yet have ample and distinguishable thermal signatures. It is normal for the thermal and video images, at times, not to superimpose exactly.

6.3 DETECTOR GAIN This adjustment allows users to select the originating point for detector gain. The detector gain is a critical adjustment and affects both the image in the internal and external viewfinders. Avoid adjusting this parameter. Because of the critical nature of this setting, adjustments should be attempted by a trained technician only. Call ISI for assistance.

6.4 DATE AND TIME STAMPS This adjustment changes the date or time stamps that are transmitted to a remote monitor. Note: To make this adjustment, you must have a remote monitor connected to the VISION3 either by Video Link Plus wireless transmitter, or by hard-wire. The adjustments for the date and time stamp work very similar to the adjustments on a standard bedside digital clock radio. That is, you highlight the digits to change, then move the digits forward until the desired setting appears on the display. To adjust date or time, first highlight the digit to be changed by gently pressing the button in location SW-2. A cursor will appear. You can scroll through the different digits of date and time by repeatedly pressing this button. When you have highlighted the correct digit, move the digit forward by pressing the button in Location SW-1. The numbers only scroll forward, therefore if you need to reduce the value of the digit, for instance, to reduce the month, scroll through the months 1 through 12, then the display will repeat with month 1 again. After the correct date and time has been set, let the unit run for approximately 15 to 20 seconds to register the change, or until the change cursor disappears.

8.0 Optional Features and Accessories:

8.1 ACCUTEMP The ACCUTEMP system is a non-contact temperature measurement feature that allows firefighters to estimate the surface temperature of objects from a remote location. When the ACCUTEMP system is installed, the internal viewfinder will be equipped with small crosshairs in the center of the screen. To measure the temperature of an object, place the crosshairs on the center of the object. The surface temperature of the object is displayed on the bottom right corner of the viewfinder, and also transmitted to a remote monitor when used in conjunction with the Video Link Plus Transmission System. ACCUTEMP takes a one foot diameter to every 45 feet of distance. For example, if the object is 90 feet away, a 2 foot circumference of the object is used to determine the temperature. If the object is 11 feet away, the circumference used is only 4 inches. The further away the object, the more ambient air influences the temperature reading. ACCUTEMP is retrofittable to VISION3 at any time by calling ISI, and returning the camera to the factory for retrofitting. Note:When ACCUTEMP option is purchased, it automatically includes all annotation features.

8.2 VIDEOMIX The VIDEOMIX system is an optional feature that allows firefighters to obtain a standard video image of the scene, superimposed on the thermal image. When a VISION3 camera is equipped with VIDEOMIX, there will be a button on the top of the camera. Simply press and hold the button to activate the VIDEOMIX visual camera. The effect is a combination Thermal Image and Video Image of the scene. The mixture is user settable between 70% and 30%. (See 6.2 for adjustment instructions.) VIDEOMIX is retrofittable to VISION3 at any time by calling ISI, and returning the camera to the factory for retrofitting.

Copyright 1999 International Safety Instruments, Inc.

Note: VIDEOMIX is not compatable with color enhancement option. 8.3 ANNOTATION The annotation enhancements primary function is to display information on the screen graphically. With the annotation feature installed, the following are displayed: 8.4.1 A battery level indicator is on the lower left hand side of both the internal viewfinder and the remote monitor. This is in the shape of a horizontal battery which depletes over time. The inside of the icon changes from solid to transparent, while the outline of the icon remains intact. As the battery charge reduces to approximately 5 minutes left, Low Battery will begin to flash over the indicator bar. 8.4.2 Current time and date, plus elapsed time from cameras power up is displayed only on a remote monitor. 8.4 COLOR ENHANCEMENT The color enhancement option uses a pre-assigned color palette to assign colors to shades of gray representing temperature ranges. Color enhancement is most useful in normal ambient temperatures but not necessarily in super heated atmospheres. Note: Color Enhancement is not compatable with VIDEOMIX. 8.5 VIDEO LINK PLUS Video Link Plus allows Command and Control personnel to see and video tape actual thermal and video scenes from inside the fire via wireless video transmission. Video Link Plus is IP67 waterproof and is completely portable from one VISION3 camera to another. All VISION3 cameras are upgradable to Video Link Plus without having to return the camera to the ISI service center. A separate operators manual is provided with Video Link Plus. The Video Link Plus is not rated as Intrinsically Safe. Do not use the system in environments or atmospheres where static or a spark will cause explosion.
