Upon conviction for this offense, a Class A Felony, the defendant shall be sentenced to imprisonment for life. The basis of complainants charge of such offense is: Official reports and statements prepared by members of the Sheboygan Falls Police Department and Special Agents of the State Division of Criminal Investigation [DCI], which reports and statements indicate that on September 19, 2012, shortly after 1:00 p.m., the Sheboygan Falls Police Department received an emergency 911 call for medical assistance at 210 Westridge Drive in Sheboygan Falls. The call came from the adult daughter of the resident of that address who stated she was checking on her mother and located her lying on the attached garage floor with blood around her head. The resident was subsequently identified as Barbara J. Olson, DOB 7/2/34. Officers responding to the scene noted Ms. Olson had massive injuries to her head and was without a pulse. Sheboygan County Coroner David Leffin subsequently declared Ms. Olson dead at the scene. Ms. Olsens daughter, identified as Judy K. Offutt, DOB 5/26/61, stated that her mothers car, a four-door Buick, gold in color, was missing. Police, with the assistance of the On Star system, located the vehicle in the parking lot of a bowling alley in Sheboygan. The vehicle was unlocked with the keys in it and it was transported to the Sheboygan Falls Police Department to be searched. A number of officers began a canvass of the Westridge Drive neighborhood. Officer Cruz of the Sheboygan Falls Police Department made contact with Daniel Musch. Mr. Musch stated that the last time he had seen Ms. Olson was Monday, September 17, 2012. He stated he left his house on Westridge Drive about 4:30 p.m. to pick up his daughter, returning home shortly after. He stated he heard tires squealing and saw Ms. Olsons car backing out of her garage. A short time later, he heard squealing tires again and saw Ms. Olsons vehicle going westbound on Westridge Drive. He stated he thought the driving was weird, in an apparent reference to the driving habits of an elderly woman. Subsequent investigation led DCI Special Agent Ken Smith to contact Nathan J Paape, DOB 12/2/98, at his residence of 1509 S. 13th Street in Sheboygan. Nathan stated Antonio told him they would go to Antonios great grandmothers house and kill her and get some money. Nathan stated he got a hammer and Antonio got a hatchet.

Nathan stated they got a ride to the Sheboygan Falls residence by Nathans mother and that they hid their weapons from her in their clothing. Once dropped off, they both entered the residence through an unlocked side door to the attached garage. When they met Ms. Olson, she told Antonio she was going to call his mother, at which point she turned away from the pair and Antonio struck her in the head with the blunt end of the hatchet knocking her down and struck her with the blunt end several more times as she tried to cover her head, groaning and telling them to stop. Nathan stated he hit her twice with the hammer and then Antonio, using the blade end of the hatchet, struck her in the head and the hatchet stuck there and that both of them had to pull the hatchet loose. Nathan stated they realized she was dead and they attempted to load her in her car to dispose of the body, but werent able to. Nathan stated they went through the house, taking a purse, loose quarters, jewelry including rings, earrings and a watch. Nathan stated he and Antonio took Ms. Olsons car and sped away from the house, eventually leaving the car in the parking lot of a bowling alley in Sheboygan and walked a short distance to a pizza parlor where they had a pizza. They returned to the car after buying some cleaning wipes from a nearby store and wiped the car down, leaving the car unlocked with the keys in it and most of the jewelry exposed in the rear seat, hoping someone would steal the car and get blamed for the death. Nathan stated the hatchet and hammer were left in the cars trunk. He also stated the pair discarded some wipes and gloves in the bushes adjacent to the bowling parking lot and the purse was thrown into a storm drain near his house. Officer Nicole Schmelter of the Sheboygan Falls Police Department was assigned as the lead officer in executing a number of search warrants. She reports a purse was fished out of a storm drain three houses down from Nathans residence containing identifiers for Barbara Olson. Quarters and a gold watch with blood-splattered clothing including jeans, shoes and a T-shirt was also located in Nathans house. In the vehicles trunk, the hatchet and hammer were located, along with bloodied blanket-like material, including a crocheted throw with what appeared to be bits of human flesh on it. In the front seat floor area, some type of school paper was found with the name Nate written on it. A bag of jewelry was found on the back seat. Officer Schmelter also found a small coin purse which matched, in pattern and color, the purse fished from the storm drain.

A search warrant was executed on Antonios locker in the juvenile detention center, where he had been placed on Tuesday for unrelated reasons. Clothing and apparent blood-spattered shoes were seized. Acting on Nathans interview, Officer Schmelter searched the bushes lining the bowling lanes parking lot and located used wipes and bloodied work gloves. Contact was made with Antonio D Barbeau, DOB 11/24/98, at the juvenile detention center who initially denied knowledge of the death but subsequently admitted he and Nathan had gone to his great grandmothers house and killed and robbed her. He admitted he used the hatchet and his account of the event was the same as Nathans account.
