Project Based Learning Proposal My proposal for a project based learning unit is based around a P3 unit in book 3A of the

My Pals series. This unit is about colours. It touches on more complex concepts, such as colours asosciations with feelings/moods and their symbolic meaning but it doesnt expand any further than a few given examples. I believe that this topic has the potential to be incredibly rich and diverse and this is why I have chosen to cover it in a project based learning context. Firstly I would set the class into groups of four, this way I could exploit the potential for peer based cooperative learning oppertunities whilst also maintaining a realistic chance of making sure no one member is able to coast by or get left out. The first part of the project I would ask them to do would be to chose one colour to work with on the project. If this became problematic, in terms of descision making or diversity of choice throughout the class I would assign a different colour to each group. After their colour was chosen I would ask the groups to go to Wikipedia and note all the shades of that colour. This would deepen the students knowledge of the diversity within that colour and also allow the opportunity for self learning and vocabulary building; for example, if a student finds the colour avocado green they may wish to learn what an avocado is and therefore use this digital resource to find out. Secondly I would ask the students to use google image search to find a picture to represent each shade of that colour, print them out and produce a labelled collage. This would provide an opportunity for cross curricular activity (with art and IT) and also allow some students who may not be strong in English but enjoy art to exert their influence on the group. The collages would provide a natural and interesting display that could be shared across the whole class, again increasing the aspect of cooperative learning and broadening every students knowledge and vocabulary. The last part of the task would be to produce a piece of creative writing, either a story or poem, that incorporated the images and names assosciated with the shades of their chosen colour. This would also provide an excellent platform for extending the part of the chapter that links colours with feelings and moods. As the students are working in groups this would allow for a larger pool of ideas, peer checking and correcting and finally publication (which could be done using a program such as MS Publisher). This would give the students a real feeling of ownership over their final product and would encourage them to be more independent learners. Finally, each groups piece of creative writing would be displayed alongside the collage and the class would be given time to read, analyse and appraise their peers work.
