Don Bosco, the great Italian educator and friend of youth had always promoted theatre, music and art. Thereafter it became a family tradition. A few years back at the International Film Festival of Trivandrum, I saw the movie Au revoir les enfants (French for Goodbye, Children) by LouisMalle. The film is about a Jewish boy being protected from the Nazis in a boarding school during the year 1943-44. One of the entertainments the children had in the boarding was films. The Childrens refectory turned into a film theatre after their supper and films were projected on the wall. Don Bosco boardings had a similar tradition of projecting movies on the wall after supper. They had a great educative value. Keeping alive the traditions and adapting to the times I am happy to invite you to the Don Bosco International Film Festival 2013. Don Bosco International Film Festistal (DBIFF) is divided into two segments- International Feature Films and Short Films. DBIFF aims at promoting the creative and technical skill of our upcoming movie makers. It is a venue where they can showcase their creativity, get them viewed and evaluated. In these films we see the world view of our youth and how they express it through the medium of film. How they use this medium to inform, entertain, enhance, enlighten and communicate. How they react to what is happening in them and around them and how they want to recreate the society. In the second segment we screen a number of reputed national and international movies. We are grateful to all those who made DBIFF2012 possible. We happily present in this festival book the details of movies selected for DBIFF 2012.

A note on Programming As we step into the third edition of Don Bosco International Film Festival, I feel immense pride in working with the team I have always dreamt of working with. DBIFF is designed to attain its vision, opportunity to youngsters and I am sure that it will continue. Since movie is an art which is taking shape every day through the hands of many, a yearly communion to discuss and evaluate its progress is a must. With the restricted number of delegates and presence of high quality film lovers and critics, I believe that DBIFF has attained such a space in the festival circuit. I wish all the delegates a very happy viewing. All the best Thank you rahul rajan Programme Director, DBIFF 2012

he essential quality of a classic is its acknowledged excellence. The ancient Greek and Roman story tellers created the mythical world of Ulysses and Aeneas, through Illiad, Odyssey and Aenead. The emotionally gripping power of these ancient literary classics held their sway for over more than two thousand years and still continues to exert their influence on the modern story tellers.

But for a modern writer, the creative environment has undergone a vast change. He/She is not the product of few experiences he/she is a product of the continuing bombardment of a large number of media impacts as portrayed in the book, Future Shock. Therefore, he is compelled to diversify his creative activities in the literary expressions and gravitate towards the omnipresent visual medium. This gravitation towards cinema and Television, which are the most powerful visual media, impacted very strongly on the ancient classical structure and directed a very strong creative energy on the five act classical structure of the melodramatic, protagonist oriented, divine intervention seeking resolution of the ancient well-known literary works.

The ancient epics like Iliad, Odyssey, Mahabharata and Ramayana are structured on the board concepts of macro classics, in which each of the numerous episodes at the micro level demonstrates the typical classical structure. These episodes illuminate the characters in the two shades of black or white. These contrasting characters immediately attract the spectator and provide him with ample diet for a nourishing experience of emotion. A total Suspension of disbelief psychologically prepares him for incredible solutions such as divine intervention. Aristotelian Empathy and catharsis purify the tension ridden spectator. William Shakespeare, the greatest of the writers during the Elizabethan period exerted a minor paradigm shift in the creation of his tragic heroes in Macbeth and Othello. But his theatre plays strongly pursued the Dramatic structure which is most suitable for any theatre productions when the playwright is aiming at a goal of the emotional level.

But classics cannot eternally wear iron armour for ever. Eschewing the incredible and ushering in realism was the next shift in theatre productions as the new era opened up with the works of Strindberg (Miss Julie), Henrik Ibsen (Peer Gynt), Maxim Gorky (Lower Depths), Anton Chekov (Cherry Orchard) etc. However, all of them adhered faithfully to the classical structure even though a great transformation in characterization and lesser degree of melodrama became the new trends. When realism penetrated more deeply into theatre productions globally through the works of such dramatists, the massive main faade of the classical structure was violently shaken to its foundations through the bold and fearless attack on theatre aesthetics by Bertold Brecht and his alienation. So far the theatre spectator was held in a dream. Now he was made to wake up and behold a drama FILM FESTIVAL 2012

performance in its real merit, enjoy and be a critic at the same time. The outstanding works of Henry Miller, James Joyce, Eugene ONeil, Harold Pinter, T.S. Elliot, Eugene lonescoe and a host of enlightened writers all took their turn leading the audience more deeply into the intellectual ecstasy of the theatre arts. The time was ripe - The opening up of the art of cinema was an eventful phenomenon to re-investigate the concept of classical art form. Akira Kurosawa created phenomenal changes in Macbeth, King Lear and Lower Depths. The famous Russian director Gregory Kotzintzev even changed the dialogue of Shakespeare held in veneration by lovers of classics and also the solemn ambience of Hamlet and King Lear. The great Italian film maker Franco Zefferelli who is a staunch admirer of Shakespeare shifted the emphasis from emotional dialogues to mesmeric visuals. These volcanoes erupted in the frame work of a classic and the critics and the public applauded. Perhaps the finest example of classical structure and dialectical Structure in combination giving us the greatest impact in cinema is the Odessa Steps sequence in Battleship Potemkin by Sergei Erisenstein the great Russian film maker. The above combination of opposing structural concepts had the ultimate amalgamation in Breathless by Jean Godard the famous French film maker and the legitimate father of the French New wave. Classical structure will always last, but eventually the visual art forms, especially cinema and television will be the vast playground in which these opposing forces ultimately meet in fulfilment of the spectators emotional and intellectual needs. Directed by: Razi Editing : Seena panolifv Category: Documentary Duration: Produced by Kalitha Year of Production: 2012

A journey through the life of C Saratchandran who travelled constantly with the camera and cinemas. It is a journey through the vivid, living memories of the protesters at Chaliyar. Plachimada, Muthanga and Kathikudam: through the experiences of his friends and everyone who have travelled with him or parallel to his path. For someone like Sarat, who remained wide awake in both at the struggle fronts and in his personal relationships; for someone as unconditionally empathetic, the camera was always the third eye for fulfilling his mission, the third eye of the resistance.

Director: C Saratchandran, Camera: Yogesh Chandran, Editing: Sharmishta N, Music: Kanavu Children, Text: Anwar Ali, Narration: Sunil Shanbagh, Duration: 35 mins, Year of Production: 2001

When you travel along a highway, you tend to notice the well maintained asphalt, the manicured lawns, the big trees, fields stretching up to the horizon, carpet of blossoms. But on a closer look and if you are not in a hurry , you will notice that your scenery is also dotted with tiny way-side flowers. They are as beautiful, perhaps more important than the dominating landscapes. Kanavu, the alternate school tucked away in the hills of Wynad forest, is one of them. The children of kanavu come from wrecked homes, brought up like orphans by their parents. Their mothers spend their meager daily earnings on watching movies, while fathers drink it up. In between the children remain abandoned. This documentary tells the story of the children of Kanavu in the background of the Aadivasis situation in Kerala and the so-called terminology of Kerala Education Model.

It is easy to be critical. But we in Third Eye, believe in focusing, peoples attention on the positive aspects of this pluralistic society. I believe in making entertaining films. All the cinema of the world I have seen, those that are classics have always been immensely entertaining. To have a film where nothing happens is a kind of pseudo film and could be because of the ignorance of the film maker. I believe there should be a give and take between the film maker and the audience, said Kulakkatil Geevarghese George. K G George is one of the most celebrated filmmakers of Kerala who modernized the Malayalam cinema in the seventies. He was completely different in the way he selected plots and the way it was treated. Many of K. G. Georges movies will disturb the audience by their straightforward and uncompromising exposal of uncomfortable truths - corruption and decadence in the society around him. After his diploma from FTII, Pune, K G George started his film career as the assistant to director Ramu Kariat. He made his directorial debut with Swapnadanam (1975) and became a strong presence of the new cinema movement that became active during the early 1970s. Swapnadanam was a commercial success while maintaining its artistic quality. Most renowned works of the maestro are: Elavamkodu Desam (1998), Ee Kannikoodi (1990), Mattoral (1988), Kathakku Pinnil (1987), Irakal (1986), Panchavadi Palam (1984), Adaminte Variyellu (1983), Yavanika (1982), Kolangal (1981), Ulkatal (1979), Swapnadanam (1975), Mela (1980), Ona Pudava (1978), Vyamoham (1977), Ini Aval Urangatte (1978), Mannu (1978), Rapadikalude Gatha (1978).

Don Bosco International Film Festivals adorns him for his significant contribution to the world of silver screen through the screening of three of his films.
