The visual code is a group/set of norms and procedures which connect meanings and signifiers to make visual messages more comprehensible.

A gesture, an image or a sign are meaningless in themselves. So, to make a group of visual elements meaningful it is necessary to set an agreement, or rules of conduct between the issuer and the receiver.

DENOTATION AND CONNOTATION OF THE IMAGES The denotation of an image is the objective meaning that can be taken out of that image. The connotation of images are the different subjective meanings that can be taken out of that image.
2. ARTISTIC GENRES Artistic genres are the different subjects that have been displayed throughout the history of art. STILL LIFE Belong to this genre are all those images that represent dead/stiff objects, generally those that we naturally find in kitchens, tables or old taverns. Often, those simple objects are depicted by artists under a high sensitivity, forcing us to discover a hidden beauty and revealing the variety and richness of its shapes, colours, textures and possibilities of the composition.
PORTRAIT This genre tries to catch physical features and the character of the person. Types of portraits: -Individual: only a person is portrayed.

Although generally people tent to value higher a realistic portrait than a less realistic one, the quality of a portrait is not on the faithful/accurate representation of the physical features but in the psychological captivation of the person or even in the visual characteristics of the image.
