On the Fringe: Constructed Images of the Misfit

Unit Overview In this unit, we will read Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children. Specifically, we will be exploring the idea of the misfit as it is treated in literature and by the wider media, as well as the connections between images and stories. We will explore the following essential questions as we journey through this unit: Essential Questions - Theme-based What is a misfit? How does society react to misfits? How are our perceptions of misfits developed and shaped? How do time period and culture influence the answers to the questions above? Essential Questions - Skill-based Is a picture worth a thousand words? Is it true that photographs dont lie? How are pictures related to stories? How are images crafted?

Unit Objectives This unit weaves together a number of objectives from SJSD Communication Arts and Gifted Curricula, as well as Missouris Core Academic Standards. In a nutshell, during this unit, you will learn to: Read like a writer Write a literary analysis Create and alter images Write a short story Read complex text Prepare and share an informal presentation Work effectively in a group

Important Products During this unit, you will create several final products to demonstrate your learning of the major objectives. As a class, you will help create the scoring guides or each of these products in order to deepen your understanding of each type of text and what makes it effective. 1. Miss Peregrine Analysis - Write a 2-3 page (typed, double spaced, Times, 1 margins) analysis essay of the novel. Specifically, answer the following question: How well does Riggs weave the photos and the story together? Critique specific photos in light of the plot events, character development, theme, etc., that they accompany. 2. Group Misfit Presentation - Your small group will research and present on one category of misfit in society. More information will be provided about this project in class at a later date. 3. Altered Image Collection - One of Bentons own Art teachers has agreed to teach us how to alter images to trick the viewer. You will create a collection of at least 5 altered images and share them with the class. 4. Found Photo Short Story - Write and publish a short story (minimum three pages) based on a selection of found photos you choose from the classs altered image collection. Your story needs to have an interesting plot, welldeveloped characters, a well-established and meaningful setting, consistent point of view, and a discernible theme. It should also weave in the photos as smoothly as possible, so that they feel more like illustrations than random additions.

5. Unit Reflection - Write an essay (minimum 2 pages, double-spaced, 12-point Times, 1 margins) reflecting on the essential questions of the unit and your experience with them. Do you have any more answers now? How do the texts, resources, and experiences of this unit help shape your understanding?
