Nurse Anesthesia Program

PROGRAM GOALS The Nurse Anesthesia Program will endeavor to accomplish the following goals: To provide the training for qualified registered nurses and train them for professional competency as nurse anesthetists. To provide related nursing experiences that will contribute to the nurse development in the specialized area of anesthesia. To inspire the desire for learning and development of knowledge and personal capabilities. To make available additional services to the people by educating qualified nurse anesthetists. To support professional and personal development. To guarantee integration of basic and clinical sciences. Standards for Nurse Anesthesia Practice Standard I: Perform a thorough and complete pre-anesthesia assessment Standard II: Obtain informed consent for the planned anesthetic intervention from the patient or legal guardian Standard III: Formulate a patient-specific plan for anesthesia care Standard IV: Implement and adjust the anesthesia care plan based on the patients physiological response Standard V: Monitor the patients physiologic condition as appropriate for the type of anesthesia and specific patient needs Standard VI: There shall be complete, accurate, and timely documentation of pertinent information on the patients medical record Standard VIII: Transfer the responsibility for care of the patient to other qualified providers in a manner which assures continuity of care and patient safety Standard IX: Adhere to appropriate safety precautions, as established within the institution, to minimize the risks of fire, explosion, electrical shock and equipment malfunction. Document on the patients medical record that the anesthesia machine and equipment were checked. Standard X: Precautions shall be taken to minimize the risk of infection to the patient, the CRNA, and other healthcare providers Standard XI: Anesthesia shall be assessed to assure its quality and contribution to positive patient outcomes Standard XII: The CRNA shall respect and maintain the basic rights of patients. Clinical Training Sites

The ACES Program in Nurse Anesthesia provide two (2) primary clinical training sites: Quezon Medical Center, Lucena City and De los Santos STI Department 0f Anesthesiology. ACCREDITATION The Nurse Anesthesia Program is at present accredited by the Philippine Academy of Medical Specialists. ADMISSION STANDARDS Admission is on a competitive basis. Students are chosen on the basis of their academic record, IQ test and performance, character, and general fitness for the study of nurse anesthesia. To be accepted, the applicant must possess sufficient intellectual and communication skills, physical health, and emotional stability for successful performance as a nurse anesthetist. Students admitted to the Program in Nurse Anesthesia are selected by an Interview and Admission Committee composed of faculty members of ACES, the Department of Anesthesiology, Quezon Medical Center clinical coordinators, and nurse anesthesia students. To successfully progress through the anesthesia for nurses program applicants must be able to perform the essential functions or tasks of an anesthetist using the following abilities:

Sensory Ability to discriminate different responses to diseases using visual, auditory, tactile and other sensory methods. Ability to identify changes in monitoring devices and alarms using visual and auditory senses. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both in Tagalog and in English through oral and written methods in order to interact with other health care providers and patients of all ages. Motor Coordinate gross and fine motor movements and the senses of touch and vision required of the nurse anesthetist to safely monitor patients inside the operating room with the endurance to handle multiple patient needs. Demonstrate sufficient physical strength to perform airway management, move and position patients and equipment. Sufficient stamina to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time. Safely maneuver the operating room and other anesthetizing locations. Respond appropriately to alarms and changes in patient conditions that require physical interventions. Cognitive

Ability to use effective reasoning, analysis, calculations, problem solving, critical thinking, self-evaluation. Ability to interpret information derived from all data to determine appropriate anesthetic management plans. Ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practice hence provide safe anesthetic care. Behavioral Demonstrate personal and professional attitude. Work effectively in stressful and rapidly changing situations. Cooperate with other members of the health care team to provide safe patient care. Prerequisites for admission include: A Baccalaureate degree in Nursing. Official transcript is required to be submitted upon application. Current license as a professional registered nurse is required. A minimum of one (1) year full-time critical care nursing experience prior to the application. Priority is given to applicants with clinical experience in an intensive care, critical care, or coronary care unit. Clinical experience within the past year is preferred. Alternate clinical experiences in other areas shall be evaluated upon request. Satisfactory completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. Clinical requirements To meet the criteria for graduation and to meet the requirement to take the Certification Exam from ACES, students must participate in a minimum of 150 regional anesthesia cases and 150 general anesthesia cases. These anesthetic cases include both general and regional anesthetics for pediatrics, obstetrics, ophthalmology, urology, general surgery and orthopedics.
