Program Notes:
This piece explores techniques where small tone clusters
are used throughout the composition in different inversions
and transpositions. Four pitches in Movement I, five in
Movement II, and all twelve in Movement III. Extended
techniques were used to explore a wide palette of sound,
another element of the fabric of each movement
Perfomance Notes:
This piece includes extended techniques on the clarinet
and piano, which depending on the size of venue being
performed, may require some amplification by setting up
microphones at the bell of the clarinet and at the lower
bass strings of the piano.
The of dynamic markings in this piece are relative. The
softest markings denote the softest that the whole
ensemble can perform while keeping the integrity of the
piece, and naturally the loudest markings carry the same
meaning for the opposite end of volume.
In the first movement (3 measures after Rehearsal
Mark A) there is instruction for the piano to play pizzicato.
This is performed by using a guitar pick in each hand and
plucking the notes indicated.
In the second movement (at Rehearsal Mark C), there
are instructions to pizzicato and buzz the piano strings.
The dynamic markings in this technique not only indicate
volume, but also indicate the intensity of the buzzing. To
create this buzzing, I wrote this technique with the use of a
chisel edge against the string in mind. However, any
edged and firm metal object should suffice. During this
section the ensemble should be aware of relative
dynamics (especially in the case of no amplification being
used.)
For the third movement, the 8th note metronomic feel
must be maintained and have forward motion. The only
break in this is two measures before Rehearsal Mark J,
where there is a measure with a fermata; to maximize
the effect of this break, a clean stop in the full ensemble
should occur at this measure.
