The automobile is one of the most significant inventions in all of history and a rguably the most important part

of the automobile is the engine. There were a va riety of inventors and innovations that went into the development of the car eng ine. A few of the most important inventors in relation to the most successful ca r engine inventions include Samuel Brown, Nicolaus Otto, Karl Benz, Gottleib Dai mler and Henry Ford. Each of these men played a crucial role. Samuel Brown is an inventor of note because he took a steam engine and altered i t so that it would run on gas. While his vehicle only operated for a short perio d of time, it was successful because of the fact that in 1824, Brown was able to take something (steam engine) and adapt it into something new that eventually l ed to the gasoline engine that we use today. His innovation is one without which the automobile engine may not exist. Nicolaus Otto created the Otto Cycle Engine in 1876. This was the first combusti on engine. A combustion engine is an engine that generates power by combusting o r burning a fuel such as gasoline. Otto's engine was the first of its kind and l ed to the further development of similar, four stroke engines. It is interesting to note that this particular tool took Nicolaus Otto over ten years to research and ultimately build. Karl Benz is the first inventor to patent a gasoline fueled vehicle which he did in 1886. He built the automobile because he was passionate about creating a hor seless carriage. Benz had his own company and was able to take the time to desig n this invention. It was the first automobile to generate its own energy and it became the basis for the car engine that we use today. Benz went on to further c reate a variety of models. Gottleib Daimler is the name that is most often associated with car engines. He actually took Otto's engine and adapted it to be more light weight. Then Daimler put the engine onto a stagecoach to create the first four wheel automobile. He went on to invent V shaped engines as well as two cylinder internal combustion e ngines. These are concepts that are still used now. His significance is mainly i n his innovative alteration of Otto's engine in 1889. Henry Ford must also be mentioned in any discussion about cars and inventions. F ord invented the assembly line in the early 1900s which was a way to manufacture cars and car engines quickly and efficiently. While machines assist with this p rocess today, at the time it was an utterly brilliant concept that changed not o nly car engine production but the field of manufacturing in general. Each of these men played a vital role in the successful car engine inventions th at is used today. However, an invention such as the car engine is one that is co nstantly being built upon and improved. As time goes on, changes are made and ad ditions are added to the car engine depending upon the type of vehicle and the i ntended function. Almost all inventions, like the car engine, are never complete . It changes with the times.
