A Gala Evening with Dr. Elliott Engel


Please join us for the third annual Literary Feast on Saturday, December 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Salisbury Civic Center. Dr. Elliott Engel will present A Dickens of a Christmas. Combining anecdotes, analysis, and large doses of humor, he offers new insights into the influence Dickens has had on our Christmas celebrations. Dr. Engel is considered the most insightful, personable, and entertaining academic keynote speaker to come out of academia in the last fifty years. His witty, engaging speaking style imparts hard, factual information, leaving his audiences virtually spellbound, yet charmed by periods of laughter and flashes of insight. The Season for Family Fun at RPL


As the fall storytime season comes to a close, the childrens staff looks forward to some very special events. This December, RPL offers some wonderful family events at each location. Tuesday, December 4th, the Holiday Pajama Express arrives at South Rowan Regional Library from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Wear your pajamas and enjoy stories, crafts and hot chocolate! Also on Tuesday, December 4th, members of the Salisbury Symphony will be at RPL Headquarters in Salisbury from 6:30-7:30 p.m. to present excerpts from the Nutcracker. Hear the story that inspired the musicand maybe even meet a Ballerina! This fun and informative program is open to all. Saturday, December 8th the East Branch in Rockwell will be holding their annual Stories by the Fireplace from 10:30-11:30 a.m. There will be stories, crafts and a special guestHo, Ho, Ho!! Also on Saturday, December th 8 , RPL is proud to once again host RoBoJo theatre. The show will begin at 2:00 p.m. at RPL Headquarters in Salisbury. Whether youre a fan of the show already or are enjoying it for the first time, this is a fun family program not to be missed!! And finally on Wednesday, December 19th, the childrens staff in Salisbury will hold their annual Christmas Tea Party with stories and crafts starting at 10:30 a.m. Mark your calendars now!

Matthew Weaver & Friends in Concert!


Join us for a free concert featuring Matthew Weaver with Paul Hill, Trevor Mckenzie and Darrell Connor, on Thursday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Stanback Auditorium at RP L H eadquart ers i n Salisbury. Matthew will also release his new CD and DVD, Matthew Weaver & FriendsLive in Salisbury, at a release party before the concert, from 5:007:00 p.m., also at RPL Headquarters. During the party, he will be signing CDs and DVDS, which will be available to purchase. Join us for this free evening of great music!

Salisbury Salutes Sidney Blackmer


In recognition of his long and illustrious career in the arts, Rowan Public Library will celebrate the life and work of Salisbury native Sidney Blackmer. Beginning in November and continuing through the end of 2012, RPL will have items from the Blackmer Collection on display at the Headquarters location in Salisbury. Along with these displays, RPL will also run a free film festival featuring some of Blackmers many fil ms. The festival begins November 18th at 3:00 p.m. and runs for three successive Sundays.

RPL Honors actor and Salisbury native Sidney Blackmer with displays and a film festival. Mike Cline kicks off the celebration November 18 with a presentation about Blackmers career. Following his presentation RPL will show the short film Teddy, the Rough Rider, in which Sidney portrays President Teddy Roosevelt. The feature film Panthers Claw follows this short. feature one short and two feature films. The short, Disorder in the Court, will be familiar to Three Stooges fans and features Suzanne Kaaren Blackmer, Sidneys wife. We follow this with two full-length filmsThe Count of Monte Cristo, with Blackmer as Mondego, and Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo. Sunday, December 2, the final afternoon of the festival, will again begin with a short featuring Suzanne as well as a television episode from Boris Karloffs Thriller series called The Premature Burial. Our festival concludes with Blackmer in his best-known roleas Roman Castevet in Rosemarys Baby. A quintessential psychological horror film, it is listed in the top ten of American Film Institutes Thrillers. All films are free but some may not be appropriate for younger audiences. Make plans now to enjoy the film festival and check out the special displays from the Blackmer Collection at RPL Headquarters!

Book Bites Book Club meets the last Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at South Rowan Regional Library in China Grove. On November 27th we will discuss our next selection, The Host by Stephenie Meyer. All are welcome!
