Solve all end-of-chapter problems of Chapter 1 and 2 of Hayt and Buck. Submit the solution of the following problem set only. Problem Set 1. As engineers you will be doing approximations very often, because in many applications we are not very much interested in the exact values. A good approximation for y = (1 x)1/2 , when x is small, is given by the rst two terms of the Taylor series of y. Determine the values of x for which the absolute error of the Taylor series approximation is less than 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001, respectively. 2. Determine the smaller root of the equation x2 10x + 1020 = 0 with an absolute accuracy of better than 1020 . Hint: Blindly using the well known formula for the roots of quadratic equation will not give accurate answer. 3. Given two vectors u and v, the dot product (also called inner product) is dened by u v = |u| |v| cos and the cross product is dened by u v = |u| |v| sin an Which of the above expressions may be used to determine the angle between two vector and why? Discuss your answer. 4. The vertices of a triangle are dened by the tip of the position vectors1 A, B and C. Derive, in coordinate-independent vector form, a formula for the area S of this triangle. A formula written in coordinate-independent vector form does not contain any vectors in component form. This means, vector A must not appear in the formula as Ax , Ay , Az , or A , A , Az , etc. 5. Derive, in coordinate-independent vector form, the equation of an arbitrary point P , located in the plane dened by the tip of the position vectors A, B and C. 6. Show that the equation of a straight line passing through the tip of the vectors A and B is given by P (B A) = A B where P is the position vector of an arbitrary point of the straight line.

A position vector is a vector starting from the origin and ending at a particular point in a coordinate system.
