ACTION VERBS

To begin with, your resume is going to need a little polishing

Use positive action verbs to describe and explain the skills you possess and how you utilized these skills in the past and hope to utilize them in the future. The following list is by no means all-inclusive, but gives you an idea of positive words that should be used to highlight your skills and accomplishments in both a resume and cover letter.

A List of Action Verbs

THE REFERENCE PAGE

THE REFERENCE PAGE Employers expect you to have your references in order before the interview. Be prepared to have a reference page available at the interview and give it to the interviewer when they ask for it (separate from your resume). Employers, in most cases, will want to speak to people who know first-hand about your work habits. So when at all possible, use the last three people you worked for as references. If you decide not to include any of your recent employers as references, hiring managers will see this as a red flag and will question why you did not list them. You may also ask coaches, professors, and TAs to serve as references Letters of Recommendation can be given to employers as an additional testament to your work ability but they are NOT substitutes for a reference sheet. Letters of Recommendation have lost credibility with employers because some supervisors have the employee write their own letter and then they simply sign it. There are two sample reference page formats on the following pages. You should follow the format that you have used for your resume and cover letter, if writing one. That way, your professional documents all have the same format and are easy to identify as yours.

COVER LETTER TIPS

You have outstanding references, an excellent academic record, choice experience and youre fully qualified. Now, lets discuss this speck of lint on your cover letter.
Cover letters are sales letters; their sole purpose is for you to market yourself. Cover letters should have an immediate connection that distinguishes you from others; therefore, it is a critical part of the resume package you submit to a prospective employer when conducting a job search. An effective cover letter should add to your resume. Both the cover letter and resume should contribute to your professional image and be an expression of your written communication and organizational skills. Since the cover letter is what introduces you to a potential employer, it should always accompany a resume. By motivating the potential employer to carefully read your cover letter, you are halfway toward your goal of convincing the employer to invite you for an interview.

10

Writing Effective Cover Letters Listed below are some basic tips in writing cover letters. When e-mailing, the cover letter is the text of the e-mail with the resume sent as an attachment or cut and paste within the space. The e-mail would not include your return address, date at the top or the persons name, title and address (like a letter sent by mail would); simply start out the e-mail with Dear Mr. Smith: or Dear Ms. Smith:. Address your letter to a specific individual. Try to get this information by speaking with the organizations representative. Also, check the companys web page. Each letter should be tailored to fit an individual company and position. If you are unable to find a name, use a title such as Human Resource Manager. Take advantage of contacts! Mention any referral in the first sentence of the cover letter to increase the probability of obtaining an interview. Plan your letter carefully before you write it. You may find it advantageous to develop several paragraphs that can be mixed and matched for each opportunity. Tell the employer what you can do for the organization and why you feel you are uniquely qualified. Include hard-hitting statements of accomplishment. Use action verbs to describe your achievements. Customize the letter. Provide specific reasons why you are the best person for that particular position. Be wary of relying too heavily on sample cover letters like those included in this book. Remember that many other job seekers are using the same resources. The cover letter is your chance to stand out as an individual. Avoid overuse of the words I and my or other personal pronouns. Avoid extraneous words and clichs. Eliminate flowery phrases. Make sure your letter is no longer than one page. It should complement and expand your resume not say the same thing. Check carefully for any spelling, grammatical or typing errors. Sign the letter (if sending by mail)! Make sure you keep a copy for your files. Refer to your enclosed or attached resume somewhere in the cover letter. If sending by mail, put the word Enclosure at the bottom of the letter. If sending by mail, select quality matching paper for your cover letter, resume and reference sheet (the reference sheet will be given out during the interview).

Checklist for Cover Letters

our cover letter is ready for mailing. Or is it? Compare it to this checklist to see if youve written the most dynamic cover letter possible. Is it an original letter rather than a mass-produced copy? Is it addressed to a named individual? (unless it is a response to a blind ad) If its a response to a blind ad, is the salutation gender neutral? Does the letter grab the readers attention in the first paragraph? Is it confident without being arrogant? Have you left out everything negative? Is the letter neat and attractive? Is every word spelled correctly?

Does it project the image of a person you would like to get to know better if you were the employer? Have you read it from the employers perspective? Have you told the company what you can do for them rather than what they can do for you? Have you avoided getting too detailed? Have you spelled out what kind of job youre looking for? Have you avoided rewriting your resume in your cover letter? Have you avoided describing your objective in vague terms? Have you avoided listing hobbies or interests unless relevant to the position? Have you listed accomplishments? Have you ensured that either a person or a machine will take the employers call? Have you used action verbs? Have you signed your name boldly and confidently?

Are all grammar, syntax, punctuation, and capitalization correct? Is the letter free of typographical errors? Is it no longer than one page? Is the letter concise and to the point? If its in response to an ad, does the letter speak to the requirements of the position? Is it interesting?

Dear Mr. Bohman: The information on your website about the SC Johnson internship program, as well as my lifelong residency in Racine, Wisconsin, has encouraged me to apply for your Analyst position in the Accounting Department. My educational background in my accounting and finance coursework has prepared me with the skills necessary to become a valuable member of your company. I understand that the position will entail analyzing projects, influencing teams, and driving decisions made within the organization. Working as an Assistant Construction Contractor for a small business for the past year has enabled me to collaborate with a team to identify problems and improve the quality of property and equipment. This position helped me realize individuals have different strengths and weaknesses in a work environment which taught me how to assign responsibilities to myself and others to maximize efficiency. The experience I gained as a Crew Leader for a tenting company has given me the ability to train others and become more assertive and safety conscious. In addition, operating heavy equipment and working in hazardous conditions has enhanced my risk management skills and quality of judgment. The skills I have gained through previous employment such as my ability to plan, delegate, train others, manage risk and be a team player have convinced me I could be a significant asset to SC Johnson. The completion of upper level accounting and finance courses has given me the necessary knowledge and critical thinking skills required to fill the Analyst position within the Accounting Department. Also, by being an active member of the Institute of Management Accountants, I have developed the communications skills that are vital to the delivery of important objectives and goals SC Johnson has set forth. I would like to talk to you about how my qualifications could be of value to SC Johnson. Please contact me at 608.212.4307 or at pfiedler@wisc.edu to discuss the possibility of an interview. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Pat Fiedler

Dear Mr. Kelly: My interest in the Financial Accountant position posted on BuckyNet stems from my desire to work for a well known financial institution that continually serves the needs of their customers by developing innovative products and services that allow them to become financially strong. In May 20XX, I will be graduating from the University of WisconsinMadison with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting. I believe that both my education as well as my work experience would enable me to bring a highly desirable skill set to First Business Bank. My business education has led to an extensive knowledge of GAAP as well as an understanding of financial concepts. This semester I am taking a graduate level Banking Simulation and Strategy course that is allowing me to apply finance concepts specific to financial institutions in real world simulations. My ability to apply financial concepts and to then effectively communicate their results would ensure that I could make an immediate impact at First Business Bank. My experience in the Financial Solutions Group at CUNA Mutual Group would allow me to bring a very specialized skill set to your bank. For the past eight months, I have been working with the Asset Liability Management software Model Management. I have also had some exposure to the cost accounting software that CUNA offers. My responsibilities required me to analyze data files as well as the financials of numerous credit unions. These analytical skills combined with the general knowledge of financial institution accounting that I have gained would help me to carry out the responsibilities of a Financial Accountant. I have submitted my resume for further details regarding my qualifications. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach me at 608-469-4072 or fiedler@wisc.edu. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Pat Fiedler

February 5, 20XX Ms. Thresa Shultz The Pacific Health Policy Group 500 N. Western Avenue Suite 214 Lake Forest, IL 60045 Dear Ms. Shultz: I am interested in The Pacific Health Policy Group position you recently posted with the Business Career Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In May, I will graduate from UW-Madison with a double major in Management and Human Resources and Economics. The combination of my educational, extra-curricular and employment experiences have helped me develop a unique skill set for the health care consulting field. My interest in consulting stems from my membership in the Wisconsin Management Consulting Club (WMCC). For the past two years, I have participated in the WMCC case competition which is judged by current and retired management consultants. Last year I received third place and this year I came in second. In addition to my participation in case competitions, I have been a member of a WMCC consulting project. We are assisting the UW-Madison Athletics Food and Beverage Service in identifying appropriate price points for their products. Through interviews and analysis of financial statements we have proposed two options that are currently being considered by staff in this organization. My work experience at the UW-Madison Department of Dermatology Research has also enhanced my consultingrelated skills and exposed me to the healthcare industry. In my position, I am responsible for coordinating four major grant proposals. As a department devoted to research, our number one source of funding is through these grants, therefore it is crucial that these proposals be prepared flawlessly. By working effectively with the researchers to get the science portions of the grants coordinated with budgets and other aspects of administrative appendices, the grants continue to meet appropriate deadlines and provide funding for the department. I was very excited to learn about the Medicaid, Medicare, and HMO consulting projects that your firm is involved with and look forward to the possibility of interviewing for the entry-level consultant position in your Chicago office. Dear Ms. Keran: The Finance Rotational Program at Procter and Gamble was brought to my attention through the Wisconsin School of Business Career Center. Based on the requirements listed in the job description and my past experience, I believe that I am an excellent candidate for your program. As such, I have attached my resume. I will graduate in May 20XX from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance, Investment and Banking. My finance major and other coursework in accounting and economics provides a solid background for this position. While in college, I worked on several projects analyzing cash flows and valuing publicly traded companies. Through coursework and projects, I have enhanced my strong analytical and technical skills and have gained an understanding of the many concepts of finance. I also have the ability to communicate those analytical concepts in a clear manner both written and verbally. The skills that I can offer to Procter and Gamble are hardly limited to those gained in the classroom. My internship at National Securities Corporation, a subsidiary of Olympic Cascade Financial, gave me direct exposure to the financial world. There I gained valuable work experience analyzing data, developing spreadsheets, and increasing both written and verbal communication skills through direct contact with clients and brokers. I gained the ability to work well with numbers and convey information in a precise and comprehensive manner. Working in the New Accounts division for a portion of the internship gave me experience dealing with clients needs, questions and problems. Not listed on my resume is the internship I am currently involved in at Morgan Stanley. I work directly for an Investment Officer who primarily deals with fixed income securities. In the short time I have been here, I have been exposed to the bond market and options strategy. Lastly, I have been active on Bloomberg. My position as Treasurer of Delta Upsilon fraternity not only enhanced my knowledge of financials, but also allowed me to become further detail-oriented and organized. This position requires a motivated individual in order to take on the many issues that arise while at the same time attending to classroom requirements. This leadership position further enhanced my communication skills, as I was called upon to be assertive and make decisions quickly in a fastpaced environment. I would welcome the opportunity to further discuss my qualifications for working at Procter and Gamble. You can contact me at pfiedler@wisc.edu or at 608.424.6686. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Pat Fiedler

Human Resources-Employment Northern Trust Bank 780 LaSalle Street Chicago, IL 60600 Dear Human Resources Manager: A recent posting on your Web site for a Lending Associate position in your Chicago or Schaumburg offices immediately caught my attention because you are looking for business graduates with strong interpersonal, sales, and analytical skills who aspire to build a strong foundation in commercial or business banking. As a senior studying finance at the Wisconsin School of Business, I am interested in applying the skills I have acquired through my collegiate career towards a banking position with Northern Trust. My educational background at the University of Wisconsin Madison and an internship position with the State of Wisconsin Investment Board has equipped me with the necessary capabilities to ensure success in the field of finance. The business curriculum, including intensive coursework in calculus, statistics, accounting, and finance, has enhanced my analytical skills, and I have had an opportunity to refine these skills through my position with the Public Domestic Fixed Income Group. I look forward to further developing these skills through a position with Northern Trust and believe my undergraduate experience has given me a strong foundation on which to build a successful career. Aside from attending the University and holding a position with a leading investment firm, I have also had the unique experience of participating in collegiate athletics. Being involved in both a rigorous academic program and a collegiate athletic team has allowed me to develop a strong work ethic and good time management skills to meet the demands of both activities. Furthermore, being a member and co-captain of a nationally ranked team has taught me the importance of striving for common goals, teamwork, and leadership in any successful endeavor. I would enjoy the opportunity to further develop these traits in your Lending Associate position. I am eager to put the skills I have acquired through my academic, internship, and athletic experience to work for you. I would appreciate the opportunity to interview for your Lending Associate position. Enclosed is my resume. I can be reached at 608.445.1998 or by e-mail at pfiedler@wisc.edu. Dear Mr. Pulner: The credit crunch, subprime lending activities and worldwide recession since September have been a direct result of overzealous banking practices. The last few years have been a time for business executives to re-think their longterm strategies. These individuals must rely on the analysis and experience of their investment bankers and other financial professionals to advise and locate capital for growth. The market is expected to rebound in the near future, and what company will be in the best position to fully market their skills and resources? Goldman Sachs is the answer, and I want to play a large role towards rebuilding the global economy in the future. My experience with Robertson Stephens in London allowed me to obtain a competitive advantage over my fellow candidates. I worked directly with a small team of Equity Research Analysts covering the Media and Telecommunications industry. While creating financial models for over 50 European companies, I obtained familiarity with European accounting standards and methods. I can break down and analyze U.S. and difficult European statements. How many other candidates have traveled or worked abroad? While abroad, I also developed great relationships with colleagues from the United Kingdom, Austria, and Sweden. I have already formed a business alliance with my friend in Austria and will continue to grow our partnership in the future. These achievements help to balance my academic success where I have obtained a 4.0 G.P.A in my finance and accounting courses. My life the past year has been very productive. I have been able to see many parts of the world and have been exposed to many different cultures and perspectives. An investment banker not only needs strong analytical and verbal skills, but he/she must possess the personality to maintain relationships, work 90 + hour work weeks and do so under heavy pressure. I am your best candidate to help grow the past success of Goldman Sachs. To maintain the efficiency that resulted in a 14% increase in profits, Goldman Sachs needs the best possible candidate. To preserve the 40% of net revenues from the European and Asian capital markets, Goldman needs people with cultural and global work experience. I have the knowledge, global experience, personality, and motivational drive to succeed. My career focus is in the merger and acquisitions product area within the communications/ media industry. My goal is to work for a company that can really thrive on the new Wall Street. Goldman Sachs has proven its power remaining profitable in what was a flat economy while providing advice with communications companies such as Comcast and AT&T. Attached is my resume. I am looking forward to establishing a relationship with you and with Goldman Sachs to discuss possible opportunities in the future. You may contact me at 608.256.4421 or at pfielder@wisc.edu. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best regards, Pat Fiedler

Dear Mr. Nejedlo: Thank you for talking with me at the Wisconsin School of Business Career Forum about your full-time opening in the Capitol Drive network group. With almost three years experience in Information Services at Harley-Davidson, I am confident you will find my qualifications a perfect match for a Network Support position. My Workstation Support internship at Harley-Davidson has allowed me to develop strong relationships and provide service to hundreds of internal customers on all shifts, at both the Capitol Drive and Pilgrim Road manufacturing facilities. My attention to detail and desire to succeed have enabled me to complete all assignments and resolve problems correctly the first time. I enjoy working with the Information Services team and gladly volunteer to cover any shifts needed to ensure customer satisfaction and manufacturing success. This past summer, I helped to support the UNIX platform at Pilgrim Road, learning how to support engineering systems under the guidance of Mike Rosa. In addition to the skills I have developed as a Workstation Support Intern, I have gained a solid educational background in the Information Systems field from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, while pursuing a second major in Spanish. These courses have given me the opportunity to communicate effectively with a diverse population, solving their technical needs. My position as Director of the Wisconsin Union Directorate Community Services Committee has strengthened my ability to lead a high performance work team. I supervise thirteen employees, develop and maintain a committee Web site, and serve over 730 committee members using information technology as effectively as possible to reduce costs and increase member satisfaction. I am a highly motivated team player with a desire to succeed at everything I do. This is demonstrated in my internship with Harley-Davidson and by past academic and extracurricular achievements. Enclosed is my resume. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to interview and discuss my qualifications further. Please feel free to contact me at pfiedler@gmail.com or at (608) 217-9936. September 24, 20XX Mr. Carl Banding Johnson & Johnson 501 George Street New Brunswick, NJ 08901 Dear Mr. Banding: Katie Miller suggested that I contact you concerning potential career opportunities at Johnson & Johnson. I am a highly motivated, hardworking student who will graduate from the University of WisconsinMadison in December 20XX with a major in Management and Human Resources. My strong business background and extensive work experience would be an asset to Johnson & Johnson in the Leadership Development Program. Throughout my college career, I have actively pursued unique opportunities to gain a variety of work experiences and an increased level of cultural awareness. Working at an IT consulting firm in Madison, WI, a railroad company in Tokyo, Japan, a plastic packaging corporation in Chicago, IL, and studying in Vienna, Austria have provided me with the opportunity to experience different corporate and cultural environments. As a result, I feel confident in my ability to quickly adapt to new situations and work with people from diverse backgrounds. Specific management responsibilities have helped me strengthen my leadership and organizational skills while becoming very detail-oriented, all of which are essential for this position. While working at Berbee, the IT consulting firm, I maintained print vendor relationships, communicating specifications and developing a timeline for print projects, which required close attention to detail and coordination between key contacts. To revise existing data sheets at Pechiney Plastics Packaging, I communicated with market managers, researchers and technicians to ensure the data sheets were both technically accurate and consistent with their image. In group settings, my vision, clear communication, and efficiency helped steer projects from conception to completion. With these unique experiences, strong leadership, and communication skills, I am qualified and eager to work for Johnson & Johnson. Enclosed is my resume. Dear Mr. Smith: This cover letter has been in the works for four years! The summer after my freshman year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I worked at the front desk of the Best Western Inntowner. From the first day of Hot Dog High, I was enchanted with the Wienermobile. Since then, I have tracked the Wienermobile and its promotions, broke out in full smile upon the sight of the Wienermobile, and even met a few Hotdoggers. I am confident I can offer Oscar Mayer a combination of excellent communication skills, an upbeat personality, and professionalism both on and off the job. For these reasons, I have attached a resume outlining my capabilities and skills. The abilities and enthusiasm I can bring to Oscar Mayer as a Hotdogger will make a significant contribution to the Wienermobile tour. Through my past opportunities with Marketing Werks as a mobile marketer, I gained valuable experience in interacting with the public, utilizing promotional materials to increase brand awareness as well as working with local media. During my internship at Lands End, I was able to learn even more about business-to-business marketing, organization of event sponsorships, and effective public speaking skills. Finally, my promotion at the UW Foundation exemplifies my motivation, dedication, and attention to detail. This promotion required a large amount of work to be done in a team environment further strengthening my ability to work in a group. In addition to these important qualities, I am a fun and outgoing individual. I consider meeting new people and traveling to new places especially while promoting a product I am familiar with and love to eat a pleasure, not a job. I know I would put forth 110% effort to ensure the success of this program. I set high standards for my work and am known for my ability to follow through and exceed my goals. It has been a long wait since the Summer of 20XX, but I am still thrilled with the possibility of becoming a Hotdogger. I am available as of January 30, 20XX so should you have an opening, I would appreciate the opportunity to further discuss the position. Attached is my resume. Please contact me at 608.239.3518 or at pfiedler@wisc.edu. Sincerely, Pat Fiedler

Mr. Tim Funk Senior District Sales Manager GlaxoSmithKline 301 East Cherokee Road Lake Forest, IL 60045 Dear Mr. Funk: Gail Stedman and I recently had the opportunity to talk about careers in pharmaceutical sales and she provided me with very valuable insight and advice on the field. She suggested that I contact you about possible career opportunities with GlaxoSmithKline. Sales interests me because of the challenges and competitive nature of the profession. Through my experience in retail sales, I know the thrill and excitement of getting a sale, but at the same time I know the disappointment that comes with missing a sale and the importance of moving on. I also enjoy interacting with customers and selling them merchandise that meets their needs. Currently, I am a sales intern with the American Red Cross where I am directly responsible for the planning and implementation of the School Safety Initiative. Some of my responsibilities include conducting market research, attending meetings with the sales team, and preparing and giving presentations to potential customers. I have a solid educational background in the marketing field from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My marketing courses have furnished me with the knowledge needed to promote a product with confidence. For the past two years, I have also been a member of Mu Kappa Tau, the Professional Honorary Marketing Society which provides a forum for public speaking and promotion all skills vital to sales. My goal is to take the valuable skills I have learned in college and adapt them in a pharmaceutical sales position. I am an enthusiastic, highly motivated team player, which is demonstrated in my current position and by past academic and extracurricular achievements. Enclosed is my resume. I would appreciate the opportunity to interview and discuss my qualifications further. You can contact me at 608.238.4238 or at pfiedler@wisc.edu. Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Johnson: Tim Reynolds suggested I contact you regarding the internships that you are offering this summer. Upon graduating in December 200X, I plan on pursuing a career in events marketing and feel either the Special Events or Special Guest Center internship would enable me to contribute most to the success of the Wisconsin State Fair. What interests me the most about this field is the way it combines people interaction with the excitement of planning and coordinating a successful event. I am a people-oriented person who will go to great lengths to ensure that people have a satisfying and pleasurable experience, taking on any obstacles that come with it. Events have always been a part of my life. At the age of 5, I was in charge of folding t-shirts for the Bastille Day run. As I got a little older, I helped register the participants and organize and distribute race materials. When I was 13, I volunteered every summer at the Zoo Ball, a charity event held at the Milwaukee County Zoo. I helped with everything from mailing the invitations to greeting the guests as they arrived at the event. Each year I was asked to come back as a volunteer. Even now, I really enjoy throwing monthly theme dinner parties for my family and friends. At the end of each dinner, I am always asked when the next one is. At UW-Madison, I had the opportunity to be a conference committee chair for the state Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) conference in the Spring of 200X. As a committee chair, I helped organize and run the state SHRM conference. In addition, I designed the conference materials given to each of the 300 participants. The conference was so successful that its model is being used for future conferences. My work experience has given me a strong understanding of the time and preparation it takes to create a successful event. As a caterer for Charles Catering, I participated in every part of the event process: the set up, the actual event, and the take down. Working at the Kohl Center in Madison, I have come to realize that a smoothly run event is dependent on good communication and well thought out coordination of people. I believe my dedication to achieving the end result and my ability to creatively address challenges in combination with my capacity to deal with multiple tasks simultaneously makes me an excellent candidate for either one of these internship positions. Attached is my resume. I look forward to telling you more about my experiences. Please feel free to contact me at 608.255.2745 or through e-mail at pfiedler@wisc.edu. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Pat Fiedler

Dear Internship Coordinator: Sports have been a part of my daily life for as long as I can remember. I have participated in and watched countless sporting events throughout my life. Over the years, I have played basketball, volleyball, soccer, golf, ran track, and am currently a member of the rowing team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Through this experience, I have learned to become more efficient and task-oriented to get all that needs to be accomplished done. In addition, the past eight summers I have worked full-time as a caddy. During that period, I completed over one thousand rounds while doing whatever was necessary to fulfill the members needs to make sure their experience was enjoyable. Like Midwest Express, my chocolate chip cookies are just one of many things that set me apart from the other candidates applying for your Marketing Manager position. Midwest Expresss marketing strategies and mission of creating value for the customer has always been of interest to me. My work experience, educational background, and passion for marketing would make me a valuable employee in your company. To strengthen my marketing knowledge and skills beyond my education, I accepted a one year position with Procter & Gambles marketing department. Originally, I was hired to create a customer database that identified new software sales opportunities. Not only did I identify $20 million in new sales opportunities, but by the end of this limited term position, I had also successfully analyzed product literature tools used by their sales force and customer segmentation data that allowed me to develop a communications strategy to increase sales potential. Prior to Procter & Gamble, I worked for a medical clinic where I was given much autonomy by the physicians to deal with daily and long-term needs of our patients. Consequently, I was able to strengthen my strong leadership and communication skills as well as to learn to be an effective team member while interacting with a large team of physicians, nurses, and support staff. The skills I have attained through my work experience and education would allow me to be an invaluable asset. I would enjoy the opportunity to meet with you in person to discuss how my qualifications would benefit Midwest Express. Enclosed is my resume. Ms. Jennifer Paulson Vice President, Human Resources Physicians Plus 510 Park Street Madison, WI 53704 Dear Ms. Paulson: After having been in the workforce for seven years, returning to school presented many exciting challenges. Now, as I re-enter the work force, I am able to offer greater depth and breadth of knowledge to an organization. Pursuing my Master of Business Administration degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has helped me expand my knowledge and strengthen my skills and abilities. My combination of experience and education will be invaluable in the position of Human Resources Director at Physicians Plus. As a Human Resources Coordinator for five years, I focused specifically on employment retention and benefits, learning hands-on the importance of benefit evaluation and communication. Most recently I was responsible for the research and implementation of the new health care plan. This included evaluating multiple plans, conducting employee focus groups, interviewing prospective carriers, and presenting the findings to the executive team. After selecting a plan, I implemented a communication strategy at various levels in the company to help all employees better understand our new health care provider and benefits. Through the MBA program, I have learned new methodologies and management techniques. For example, a marketing research class provided me with new methods of gathering employee feedback and understanding the needs of employees. I am currently providing consulting services for a company to help determine their strategic objectives for their employee benefits. I am confident that my many years of human resources experience along with my excellent academic background will make me your most successful candidate for this position. Enclosed is my resume. I look forward to further discussing how my qualifications will benefit Physicians Plus. You can reach me at (608) 265-5550 should you have any questions. Thank you for your time and consideration. Dear Mr. Tweed: Jumping Frog Breeders Service (JFBS) has been a part of my life since I was a child. One of the highlights of my familys periodic journeys from Hannibal, Missouri to Madison, Wisconsin was reading the pun board at JFBS. As the years progressed, those journeys have changed from my childhood football outings to high school field trips to escaping from my graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business where I am finishing my Master of Business Administration degree with a double major in Finance and Accounting. Therefore, it seems only natural that as I begin my quest for a career, I think of JFBS. Your companys tradition of excellence, leadership for the future, and obvious sense of humor are all traits I admire. The innovative breeding activities of JFBS are intriguing as I have been interested in the welfare of animals since my childhood. I would like to combine my enthusiasm for animals with my accounting and finance knowledge by pursuing your Controller position. My knowledge in the fields of accounting and finance along with my analytical and quantitative skills have been honed by more than five years of work as a financial analyst at CUNA Mutual Insurance. I will be graduating in May and was recently notified that I passed the CPA exam. Attached is my resume. My strong desire to combine my knowledge and interest in animals with my business skills makes me an ideal candidate for your Controller position. Feel free to contact me at (608) 412-8466. Mr. Don Heath Regional Manager DaimlerChrysler 1000 Chrysler Drive Auburn Hills, MI 48326 Dear Mr. Heath: It was a pleasure meeting you at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business Career Forum at the Kohl Center. After our conversation, I was greatly encouraged and very interested in being a part of your Technical Support program at DaimlerChrysler Information Service. This position is of particular interest to me because I would be able to utilize my international experience and apply my knowledge of information technology to the global challenges your company faces. After graduating from computer engineering school in China, I focused my work in the technical field of software development. After working for both small businesses and large corporations, I have learned to use IT as a powerful tool to help meet the strategic vision of the companies. Pursuing my Master of Business Administration at a top-ranked program like the UW has helped me in several important ways. First, it has enabled me to further study US businesses. Second, I have gained the fundamental business skills and kept pace with the ever-changing technology by taking computer science courses such as JAVA programming and database application. I believe that DaimlerChrysler, a leading edge company, is the best place where I can most effectively combine my technical background and business perspective. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to discussing my qualifications with you in greater detail. Enclosed is my resume. Its encouraging to know you are about to have three openings. I am enclosing my resume with the thought that the next step will be an interview. I have spent the last three years cultivating my skills and abilities in retail. These years provide a good background for my ultimate goal of a job like yours: running the floor in a department store like Eddie Bauer. My proudest achievement in retail was last year when my department exceeded budgeted sales by more than 200%, thanks to innovative pricing and selling. My creative thinking and attention to detail are certainly the two qualities that have taken me to where I am today. I have gotten excellent reviews from my superiors at the store, but I feel I can do even better at a store such as Eddie Bauer by increasing sales and promoting in-store traffic.
